Archie Yates, breakout star of Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit,” leads debutant Jordan Murphy Doidge’s coming-of-age drama “Clout | A Cautionary Tale.”
Yates scored a nomination at the Critics Choice Awards in the best young actor/actress category for “Jojo Rabbit.” In “Clout,” co-written by Tom Duthie, Tristam Thomas and Doidge, Yates plays boarding school teen Oskar who meets a tragic turn while proving himself in a bid for online fame. The script aims to be a hard-hitting social commentary that tackles hot-button issues like cyberbullying, viral obsession, and the erosion of truth in the digital sphere.
The cast also includes Nadine Marshall, Anna Wilson-Jones, Samuel Leakey (“Gretel & Hansel”) and social media influencer Kit Price.
The film is produced by Francis Chapman (Sundance winner “In The Summers”) for U.K.-based Pimlico Pictures. Principal photography has commenced and the script is being shot in both short and feature-length versions.

Josh Hutcherson has starred in some memorable projects since starting in the industry as a child, but there’s one role he lost out on that might surprise fans.
During a recent interview with BuzzFeed, the actor revealed he auditioned for one of the Home Alone films when he was younger.
“I was probably 11, I think, when I auditioned for it,” the Five Nights at Freddy’s actor recalled. “It got down to me and the other guy. That was the first time that I tasted rejection, so that was really hard.”
Though Hutcherson didn’t share what installment in the Home Alone franchise he auditioned for, based on the timeline, it would have been one of the newer films. Since the first two movies that Macaulay Culkin is most known for were released in 1990 and 1992, right around when Hutcherson was born.

This weekend marks the inaugural Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, and like many awards shows, there are a number of notable names who you might not have realized could end up being winners. These names range from a former president and Oscar-winning filmmakers to famous actors and popular singers.
Probably the most notable of these nominees are former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. When Netflix debuts the limited animated series “Oni: Thunder God’s Tale” on Friday, Oct. 21, it will be the culmination of a longtime goal for creator-director Daisuke “Dice” Tsutsumi to bring characters from Japanese folklore to a global audience.
“Oni,” written by Mari Okada and Tsutsumi, follows the story of Onari, a free-spirited girl living in a world of strange gods and monsters who is determined to help save her village from a looming threat. It features an international cast of voices including Momona Tamada as Onari, “Jojo Rabbit” star Archie Yates as her best friend Kappa, Craig Robinson as her protector Naridon and George Takei as her teacher Mr. Tengu.
Tsutsumi and his Tonko House partner Robert Kondo first talked with Variety about the project in early 2019 but the genesis of the idea began earlier than that. “It was about five years ago when Robert asked me, if I could draw anything,...

With the introduction of Disney+ and therefore the need for new shows and movies it is no surprise at all that the most well known of Christmas movies got a sequel on the streaming platform. The original Home Alone (and that first sequel) is one of my favourite movies ever and any modern day sequel was going to have a tough time being anywhere near as good as the first two films. That said, with a talented cast, I was looking forward to seeing how Home Sweet Home Alone turned out.

Since its release over thirty years ago, "Home Alone" has become a traditional holiday watch for families all around the globe. When the Walt Disney Company purchased 20th Century Fox, a new installment of the kid-centered holiday classic was inevitable. Rather than focus on legitimate baddies like Harry (Daniel Stern) and Marv (Joe Pesci), and a precocious Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), we're given a sympathetic couple down on their luck in the form of Jeff (Rob Delaney) and Pam McKenzie (Ellie Kemper), and a rich sociopath named Max Mercer (Archie Yates of "Jojo Rabbit" fame) in "Home Sweet Home Alone."

The latest entry into the beloved “Home Alone” franchise hails from a stacked roster of comedy veterans.
“Borat” and “Bridget Jones’ Baby” co-writer Dan Mazer directs the film from a screenplay by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell of “Saturday Night Live” (and of Variety’s list of 10 Screenwriters to Watch in 2021). The cast includes Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney and Kenan Thompson. But in “Home Sweet Home Alone,” those comedians and their decades of experience stand in service of something greater.
That is, of course, the budding stardom of Archie Yates, the 12-year-old from Kent, England who made his film debut in 2019 via Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit.” He stole the screen as Jojo’s [Roman Griffin Davis] goofy and blunt best friend Yorki, then did it again during the film’s awards campaign, winning hearts and going viral online for his red carpet appearances.

Time for yet another merry “movie mash-up”, with a big accent on the first “m”, The studios love mixing genres and “concepts’ almost as much as character “meetings”. Here’s a “holiday film” that’s also a reboot (or “re-imagining”). Or is it? Sure, there have been many variations of “A Christmas Carol’, swapping time periods and even genders. And while that one is perhaps the most famous yuletide tale of the 19th century, for the last decade of the 20th, it’s that heart-tugging, gut-busting romp about a lad left by himself for the big “25th”. It generated two sequels that involved the “Kevin” character and a couple of “follow-ups” (in title only) with other youngsters in a similar predicament. Now, the 2021 “model’ is a perplexing “hybrid’ as it’s got another lad, but the producers go out of their way to let us know that it is set...

Over the course of more than 30 years and five films, the “Home Alone” franchise has mostly failed to recapture the magic and charm of Chris Columbus’ 1990 original, and the latest entry into this seemingly bomb-proof franchise — the awkwardly titled “Home Sweet Home Alone” — continues that pattern, even with plenty of good intentions. Dan Mazer’s film is the closest yet the series has come to a true remake, focusing on one plucky kid, two crazed robbers, and a Christmastime backdrop engineered to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy, but
Most of that weirdness is baked right into the film’s basic premise, which dares to ask: What if our plucky kid was kind of a jerk? And what if our crazed robbers actually had a good reason for committing crimes? And what if this family-friendly comedy included jokes about O.J. Simpson’s checkered past? What follows is an uneven mishmash,...

“Home Sweet Home Alone” takes everything audiences loved about the Chris Columbus-directed, John Hughes-penned original and turns it around on them. Holiday sentimentality co-mingling with slapstick violence hits differently when the filmmakers not only swap the roles of the empathetic protagonist and dastardly antagonists, but also take a both-sides approach to rooting interest. While this might seem like an ingenious way to reinvigorate a long-run-into-the-ground franchise where a child faces off against bumbling burglars, this Disney Plus offering maddeningly fails to lean into the aspects it so desperately and ambitiously seeks to change. Mean-spirited, downright sloppy and awkwardly unfunny, this rote feature reboot lacks holiday cheer.

It seems particularly cruel that the first thing we see in Home Sweet Home Alone is the 20th Century Fox fanfare—and yes, it is still the Fox fanfare when the floodlights come on and the brass section plays, no matter the text on the screen. That fallen movie studio was of course no collection of saints when it came to milking popular IPs. They even made that horrible Home Alone 3 back in ’97 you forgot existed. But Home Sweet Home Alone? The belated and opportunistic “legacy sequel” which attempts to manipulate your childhood nostalgia into crass dollar signs? That’s a modern Disney maneuver through and through.
The unique bit of ugliness about Home Sweet Home Alone’s cynicism, however, is that it’s not even nostalgia done particularly well. Disney rolls out the red carpet when they’re mining their own vaults for animated classics to remake, or...

Ellie Kemper has responded to backlash about her 1999 involvement in a St. Louis debutante ball with racist origins.
“The century-old organization that hosted the debutante ball had an unquestionably racist, sexist, and elitist past. I was not aware of this history at the time, but ignorance is no excuse. I was old enough to have educated myself before getting involved,” Kemper wrote Monday on Instagram.

After a Twitter user posted last week about the existence of the Veiled Prophet Ball, others quickly circulated newsletter clippings that showed Kemper’s participation in the event. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch archives, Kemper, who was a 19-year-old Princeton University freshman at the time, was crowned the Queen of Love and Beauty at the Veiled Prophet Ball on Dec. 24, 1999, at the Adam’s Mark Hotel. The hotel was turned into the Hyatt Regency St.

There are Christmas films and then there’s Home Alone.
Released back in 1990, no one really knew what to expect from this low-budget family comedy about a boy forced to defend his house from a pair of bungling burglars after being accidentally left behind from a family holiday.
Yet Home Alone is one of those rare examples of all the stars aligning in Hollywood to create something special. It’s a truly unique Christmas film, both feel-good and immensely funny, rivalled only in that respect by Will Ferrell’s Elf.
There are countless reasons why it remains a festive classic; John Hughes’s script, Chris Columbus’s deft direction, the work of cinematographer Kevin Macat and John Williams’s score are just a few examples.
One that often gets overlooked, however, is Devin Ratray’s Buzz McCallister.

Disney is still ploughing through its back catalogue – which is pretty massive thanks to its acquisition of Fox – for viable remakes and reboots. After deciding to cherry-pick 1990’s Christmas classic Home Alone for the Disney+ reboot treatment late last year, and announcing that Jojo Rabbit’s Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and comedian Rob Delaney would star in it, the machine didn’t stop for objections.
Chris Columbus, who helmed the original Home Alone, definitely has some though.
“Nobody got in touch with me about it, and it’s a waste of time as far as I’m concerned,” he told Insider. “What’s the point? I’m a firm believer that you don’t remake films that have had the longevity of Home Alone. You’re not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It’s just not going to happen. So why do it? It...

Christmas has come early! Yesterday, Disney Plus added the Home Alone trilogy back to its library as a surprise festive treat for subscribers. The iconic holiday comedy movies were available on D+ at launch last year, but they were removed soon after due to a pre-existing license. That’s now been taken care of, though, so viewers can enjoy the adventures of Kevin McAllister and company once again this Xmas season.
“Surprise, ya filthy animals!” the Disney Plus Twitter account tweeted this Friday. “The Home Alone Collection is Now streaming on #DisneyPlus—it’s our early gift to you.”

When Disney acquired Fox for $70 billion, it took full ownership of Fox-owned IP that can now be reimagined, rebooted, and remade under the Mouse House. Enter the upcoming Disney+ streaming series “Home Alone,” a reboot of director Chris Columbus and producer/writer John Hughes’ 1990 comedy classic starring Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, and Catherine O’Hara. The film earned over $470 worldwide for Fox and is now getting a Disney spin from “Dirty Grandpa” director Dan Mazer and a cast that includes Archie Yates, Rob Delaney, and Ellie Kemper.
In a new interview with Insider, Columbus rails against the idea of rebooting his beloved comedy favorite. The director revealed nobody from the Disney+ production got in touch with him about jumpstarting a new “Home Alone” television franchise — not that Columbus thinks a “Home Alone” reboot is needed.

Good news, everyone! Disney Plus has announced that the Home Alone trilogy is returning to the Mouse House’s streaming service this very week. The beloved festive family movie franchise was originally available on the site upon its launch last November, but the three films were moved over to HBO earlier this year due a pre-existing contract. With that expired, though, D+ is now adding them to its library again on November 13th.

“Jojo Rabbit” breakout and “Home Alone” reboot star Archie Yates is voicing the lead role in the animated VR film “Paper Birds,” which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Award-winning VR shop Baobab Studios has come on board the project to produce along with Facebook’s Oculus and Latin American animation studio 3Dar.
“Paper Birds,” directed by 3Dar CEO and co-founder German Heller and art director Federico Carlini, tells the story of a young musician named Toto (Yates) whose music attracts a following of mysterious paper birds that help him unlock a portal between the physical world and a dark world invisible to the naked eye. Toto plays a bandoneon, with music performed by renowned Argentine tango bandoneon player Juan Jose Mosalini. Filmmakers crafted the entire universe to feel like each detail has been handmade by artisans. It will be presented in two installments, with the first part available through Oculus later this year.

Home Alone is now firmly established as a holiday season classic and there were cries of anger when the movie was pulled from Disney+ at the end of 2019. But fans of the premise won’t be left empty-handed for long, as the wheels are beginning to turn on a reboot of the concept that will air on the aforementioned streaming service.
We don’t know too much about it just yet, but multiple outlets are now reporting that Kenan Thompson, Ally Maki and Chris Parnell have joined the cast. Already announced as the star of the movie is Jojo Rabbit‘s Archie Yates, who’ll be playing Max, the Macauley Culkin role. Yates was one of the funniest actors in Taika Waititi’s Oscar-winning comedy, so I have high hopes that he can fill Culkin’s pretty big shoes.
Rounding out the cast, meanwhile, are Aisling Bea, Timothy Simons, Pete Holmes and Mikey Day.
