"The agency will hunt you to the grave." Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled an official trailer for an action thriller film titled Canary Black, yet another of these generic, derivative action movies being dumped on video these days. This one is also skipping theaters entirely, and will be streaming on Prime Video starting in October. Does anyone care? Will anyone even watch anyway? From the director of District B13, Taken, From Paris with Love, The Gunman, Peppermint comes a new action film called Canary Black starring Kate Beckinsale. "It's more than a mission." It follows CIA operative Avery Graves as she is blackmailed by terrorists into betraying her own country to save her kidnapped husband. She must rely on her cutting-edge training and primitive fighting skills. Of course. This also stars Saffron Burrows, Ray Stevenson (Rip), Rupert Friend, Jaz Hutchins, Goran Kostic, and Ben Mills. This movie looks so exceptionally unoriginal,...

“Taken” director Pierre Morel is turning his lens to action-comedies with latest film “Freelance.”
Alison Brie stars as a washed up journalist who travels to Colombia for a high-profile interview with a local dictator. She hires a private security guard, played by John Cena, to protect her while abroad; yet of course, things go horribly wrong and the duo are on the run.
The official synopsis reads: An ex special forces operative stuck in a dead-end desk job (Cena) reluctantly takes on a gig to provide private security for a struggling journalist (Brie) as she interviews a ruthless — but impeccably dressed — dictator (Juan Pablo Raba). When a military coup breaks out just as she’s about to get the scoop of a lifetime, the unlikely trio must figure out how to survive the jungle, the assassins, and each other in order to make it out alive.
Alice Eve and Christian Slater also star.

Rupert Friend, currently on screens in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, has joined Sophie Thatcher in Companion, the sci-fi thriller from the team behind last year’s horror hit Barbarian.
The New Line feature begins production this month and has been filling out its call sheet at breakneck speed. Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri and Harvey Guillén all have signed on in recent weeks.
Drew Hancock wrote the original script and is making his directorial debut with the feature, the many plot points of which are being kept hush-hush. It is, however, being described as self-contained, and Thatcher is set to play a character who is more than meets the eye.
Friend’s character information is being kept in the dark, but suffice it to say the actor won’t be living up to his last name.
Zach Cregger will produce the feature along with Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures.

Updated, 3:10 p.m.: Matthew Dwyer and Rescue Dog Productions LLC have dropped the suit brought against a second producer and his company. On Thursday, the plaintiffs’ attorney filed court papers with Judge Christopher Lui in Los Angeles requesting dismissal of the suit “without prejudice,” meaning it can be refiled later. The papers were not clear whether a settlement was reached or if the case was not being pursued for other reasons.
After the ruling a representative for one of the defendants, Jeff Elliott of Bricknell and Broadbridge International, gave a statement to Deadline that reads, in part: “This suit lacked merit and was a desperate effort by Mathew Dwyer and Rescue Dog Productions to extort money from Brickell and Broadbridge…This is the second time in four months that Dwyer has withdrawn a lawsuit against Brickell and Broadbridge for the same false allegations without receiving any settlement.”

For Kate Beckinsale, the most challenging aspect of working with “Succession” star Brian Cox was having to loathe him. “If Brian and I were at school, we’d be separated instantly,” Beckinsale says. “We’re quite naughty and make each other laugh and we’d sit there, giggling, so we did have to get ourselves together a bit for the movie.”
Beckinsale stars opposite Cox in Catherine Hardwicke’s “Prisoner’s Daughter,” which bows Sept. 9 as a Toronto Intl. Film Festival Gala presentation. The gritty family drama follows Max (Cox), a dying convict who tries to make amends with his estranged daughter Maxine (Beckinsale) and grandson. However, his violent past threatens to come between their reconciliation.
Why were you drawn to “Prisoner’s Daughter”?
I found the script really emotional. It’s got a lot of difficult family things in it, which I feel is relatable to everybody. There’s estrangement between the father and the daughter,...

Tom Hanks, Jodie Comer, Olivia Colman, David Cronenberg and Richard Linklater head projects at a Cannes 2022 pre-sales market that looks like the most buoyant in recent years, while also ushering in what is being hailed as a new era in global rights licensing.
“We’re very optimistic, expecting a pretty busy market with a lot of titles, the first real market after the pandemic,” said Constantin Film’s Martin Moszkowicz.
“Several distributors have told me that this Cannes will be the biggest market for projects in several years — in volume and quality,” said Cecile Gaget at Anton, which is selling Jodie Comer-led apocalyptic thriller “The End We Start From.”
Multiple larger packages hit the market late last week. “People are conscious there could still be quite a lot to come in,” said Anne Cherel at Studiocanal, which over the weekend unveiled one hot project, comedy “Wicked Little Letters,” re-teaming Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.
