Neil Marshall got his feature directorial career started with one of the coolest werewolf movies ever made, Dog Soldiers, which begins with a scene where a camper played by Craig Conway gets attacked by a monstrous beast. Marshall went on to cast Conway as a different sort of monstrous beast in his next film, The Descent, then as a power-hungry cannibal named Sol in his film Doomsday (pictured above). Now Marshall is serving as an executive producer on Conway’s own feature directorial debut… and judging by the title, Conway might be getting his directing career started in a way similar to Marshall’s own. Because when I see the title Little Red, my first thought is that this could be a werewolf movie.
Deadline has confirmed that Little Red “will reimagine the Little Red Riding Hood story through a contemporary lens.” The involvement of werewolves, however, has not been confirmed.

It remains to be seen if Neil Marshall will ever get the chance to direct the Dog Soldiers sequel or the Predator movie he wants to make – but he’s not just waiting around to be given those opportunities. His latest film is the action thriller Duchess, which Saban Films will be giving a digital and VOD release on August 9th… and with that date just one month away, a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Marshall wrote the Duchess screenplay with Charlotte Kirk, who also stars as the title character, a tough, working-class, petty criminal who morphs into an anti-heroine to be reckoned with in a murky underworld, in the treacherous world of diamond smuggling. Determined to seek retribution she launches into a vicious and violent pursuit for vengeance.

With his 2000 feature directorial debut The Dead Hate the Living!, Dave Parker made what I feel is one of the best Full Moon films, so I’ve been eager to see more of his work ever since. He hasn’t made a lot of movies over the decades, but every time he has, I’ve been there to check it out: the subversive slasher The Hills Run Red (2009), the anthology Tales of Halloween (2015), the housesitting horror It Watches, the Full Moon spin-off Puppet Master: Doktor Death (2022)… So I’m excited to see that a new Parker film, a vampire movie called You Shouldn’t Have Let Me In, has just been released through the free streaming service Tubi as a Tubi Original! The trailer is embedded above.

It seems like every year, either at Halloween or sometimes at the end of summer, a new seasonally themed anthology, or six, gets released upon the horror-viewing community. We’ve been subjected to some good, some great, and some not so great. Anthologies come and go, but a few remain favorites for good, and sometimes bad, reasons. Films like Tales of Halloween, 10/31, Creature Features, Southbound, and Creepshow have been successfully harnessing the anthology category for years, decades even, while films like the V/H/S sequels, All Hallows Eve, and Verotika have shown us that not all anthologies are created equal. Of course, everyone has a different opinion on what the best ones are,...

Coming like a bat out of hell to theaters September 14th is the long-anticipated Latino anthology horror film Satanic Hispanics. Filmmakers Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!) and Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead) spearhead this fun, yet creepy grindhouse-like horror adventure, combining their artistic forces with horror filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock), and Demián Rugna (Terrified). These five Latinos groundbreakers in horror bring their unique styles in distinctive segments that are intertwined in a police investigation of a mysterious and sadistic massacre, with a lone survivor telling horrific tales that are beyond belief.
All five directors share what films and filmmakers impacted them, how Satanic Hispanics came to be, their segments, and the importance of Latino participation in horror.
What is your favorite horror movie?
Mendez: I have two, my favorite horror movie and the best horror movie. The best horror movie is The Exorcist.

For the past few years, editor, director, and animator Zach Passero has been working on a hand-drawn, animated horror film called The Weird Kidz and it’s finally making the rounds at film festivals. Passero, who has frequently worked with Lucky McKee on films like May (2002) and Tales of Halloween (2015), created The Weird Kidz from the fond memories of his childhood, and McKee serves as a producer on the film. Featuring cassette tapes and mullets and perfectly capturing the vibe of the eighties, The Weird Kidz follows three friends, 12-year-old boys Dug (Tess Passero), Mel (Glenn Bolton), and Fatt (Brian Ceely), as they go camping in the desert with Dug’s older brother Wyatt (Ellar Coltrane) and his girlfriend Mary (Sydney Wharton).
When the group stops at a gas station, the owner Duana tells them about The Night Child, a creature she claims lives in the desert and took her younger brother twenty-five years ago.

Since directing his first film All Cheerleaders Die in 2001, to May in 2002, and segments in Masters of Horror and Tales of Halloween, it’s safe to say filmmaker Lucky McKee has gained a cult following. His work usually explores some of the darker sides of humanity and things that most of us would never do, but the characters are relatable, and this is what makes McKee’s films appealing—it can be liberating to exorcise your demons by watching a movie about characters who do monstrous things, but without any of the messy consequences.
Written by Joel Veach in his screenwriting debut, McKee’s new film Old Man, stars the incomparable Stephen Lang as the Old Man, who lives in a cabin deep in the woods. When a lost hiker named Joe, played by Marc Senter, knocks on the Old Man’s door asking for help, a charged conversation ensues between the two men.

There was some brief debate — many years ago — as to whether or not an action picture like "Die Hard," set at a Christmas party, should qualify as a Christmas movie. That is: is "Die Hard" appropriately emblematic of the holiday season? These days, it's widely accepted as such — with some websites even finding scientific evidence to prove it — but there was a time when what did and did not qualify as a Christmas move was a matter of multiple critical kerfuffles. In 2022, the broad consensus appears to be that anything set at Christmas, even briefly, could qualify. Older critics have seen the definition broaden.
No such debate was ever required for a Halloween movie. What qualifies as a "Halloween movie" has, if one asks a die-hard horror nut, always been quite broad. Indeed, nearly anything in the horror genre can be watched in the month of October and count as a Halloween movie.

As An Intrusion begins, Sam Hodges (Dustin Prince) has a secret, a recently ended affair with one of his co-workers. Almost immediately after he ended it bad stuff starts happening. His house and car are broken into, his daughter Rebecca stalked and his wife Joyce (Erika Hoveland) threatened. An obvious case of fatal attraction, right?
But as the incidents get more severe the police, including Detective Simpson, start digging deeper into the matter. And it begins to look like an affair may not be Sam’s only secret or even his darkest. Judging by the number of films like An Intrusion that Lifetime airs, there’s a big audience for these kinds of thrillers. Can it stand above the crowd and steal some of that audience.

You can’t really talk about indie horror without talking about Dr. Rebekah McKendry. She has become synonymous with the genre, first as a journalist, then as a podcaster, and now as a filmmaker with multiple shorts and two features, All the Creatures Were Stirring and Psycho Granny, to her credit so far. She is what those douchier than myself might refer to as a “tastemaker” or an “influencer”—a lifelong fan of horror with a large platform from which to educate and enlighten. She’s a rare breed in the genre, both a creator and professional appreciator, deeply entrenched in all aspects of the genre. She has been and continues to be one of horror’s greatest champions.
Her debut feature, All the Creatures Were Stirring, a Christmas horror anthology co-written and directed alongside her husband David Ian McKendry, might as well be called “Indie Horror: The Movie,” seeing...

Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film The Reckoning, Neil Marshall talks about the desire for creative freedom, putting leading lady Charlotte Kirk through hell, his love for FrightFest and his urge to make something outrageously violent and bloodthirsty again.
The Reckoning sees you returning to the horror genre. Was this an important factor in choosing to make the film?
Absolutely. After the nightmare of Hellboy, which was a deeply dissatisfying creative experience on so many levels – I’d originally been hired to bring a horror angle to Hellboy and was never allowed to do that – so I had an itch that needed scratching. I’d been wanting to do another horror movie for a while, and for various reasons, one of which was so I could bring something back to FrightFest, because I love this festival so much. It feels like coming home again. The whole festival scene is a buzz,...

I’ve always been fond of documentaries that explore the deeper echelon of horror, and especially those that sit down with a plethora of actors and filmmakers to discuss a variety of topics. That’s what The Horror Crowd is all about, with veteran insider Ruben Pla taking us on a journey across Hollywood’s horror scene, talking to actors, directors, writers and producers as discussions happen in a very organic way. It feels like a gentle and easy-going conversation, and I dug that.
It’s a nice arrangement of talking heads, here, too. From the likes of Lin Shaye (Insidious), Greg Grunberg (Heroes) and producer of Paranormal Activity and Chernobyl Diaries, Oren Peli, to indie horror actress Sarah Nicklin (The Haunting of Alice D), editor of Tales of Halloween,...

“Isolation,” a horror anthology film, has finished its principal photography shooting entirely in quarantine.
The film weaves together nine standalone, yet interconnected, horror stories from all corners of the world. It follows people as they confront their biggest fears in attempts to survive an increasingly deadly pandemic, a premise that hits close to home for many people during the coronavirus crisis.
The teams of filmmakers on the project include Dennie Gordon; Larry Fessenden; Bobby Roe (“The Houses October Built”); Andrew Kasch (“Tales Of Halloween”); Zach Passero (“Wicked Lake”) and Christian Pasquariello (“Alien Invasion: S.U.M. 1”). The anthology will also showcase new voices in horror with films by Alexandra Neary (“The Innocent”), Alix Austin and Keir Siewert (“Retch”), and Kyle I. Kelley and Adam Brown (“The Music Lesson”).
For “Isolation,” producer Nathan Crooker created a fictional world set many months in the future that is based around the coronavirus pandemic.

Horror anthologies have made a pretty healthy comeback in the last few years; some are ok, some are regrettable, and some have awesome production values as well as good stories, such as Tales Of Halloween. Created by director Axelle Carolyn, Tales features 11 directors helming 10 tales of bad behavior, wickedness, madness, and spooky fun, with an animated opening sequence by Ashley Thorpe. Made under the umbrella collective of "The October Society," this film showcases the talents of horror directors Carolyn, Neil Marshall, Darren Lynn Bousman, John Skipp, Andrew Kasch, Lucky McKee, Adam Gierasch, Dave Parker, Mike Mendez, Ryan Schifrin, and Paul Solet. Adrienne Barbeau pretty much reprises her The Fog DJ character in a sense, her smooth voice rolling out over invisible airwaves as the stories...

Greenlight is an indie horror film from the Horror Collective. Centrally focused on Jack (Chase Williamson), this filmmaker will do whatever it takes to make a film. But, some of the cast and crew on Jack's next production might have taken their roles a little too far. This feature has won an Audience Award for "Best Suspense Film" at the Another Hole in the Head Film Festival. Now, Greenlight is getting set to leave the film festivals behind in favour of the Digital marketplace. From director Graham Denman, Greenlight also stars: Shane Coffey (Starry Eyes), Caroline Williams (Tales of Halloween), Nicole Alexandra Shipley and Evanne Friedmann. The film's release date is scheduled for the end of the month. Greenlight is the filmmaking term in which a film is given the go-ahead - for production. Usually a script is greenlit by studios or production companies, with the studio head giving the final thumbs up.

Exclusive: Producer Shaked Berenson has teamed with former Dread Central Editor-in-Chief, Jonathan Barkan to launch the new genre distribution label The Horror Collective. The banner will be under Berenson’s production/distribution outfit Entertainment Squad and Barkan will head the venture which plans to release 10-12 films per year.
Like the name of the distribution label suggests, The Horror Collective is building itself to become a destination that fosters independent horror filmmakers and connect their films to fans. It will also finance and produce original content. The outfit’s inaugural film will be Elza Kephart’s Slaxx, which was the first project financed Entertainment Squad and will be released by The Horror Collective and enter the festival circuit in Q1 2020. Berenson financed and executive produced the Slaxx with long collaborator, Anne-Marie Gélinas of Ema Films.

We’re fast approaching the season of good chills. The time of year where pumpkins are lit on porches around the world, where your local Starbucks is selling out of Pumpkin Spice, where bags of candy are being stocked up on by households awaiting trick or treaters, and… of course, where horror movies are given that extra bit of promotion and hype. I mean, I love horror, it’s my favourite genre, but the world seems to join in when October-time comes around and Halloween is on the horizon.
Like Christmastime, a lot people have their own Halloween customs, things they do around the season each year in order to feel that feeling of seasonal spookiness in their stomachs. Whether it’s baking spider-shaped cookies, or carving a pumpkin with family, or having a party, or having a horror film marathon. Movies are something that people love to pop on...

Which is Better is a new column here on Nerdly where we’ll pick two related movies and discuss each of them, and then conclude which we think is the best one. It might be about sequels in comparison to the first film, or the original film and its eventual remake, we might even do it for full film franchises. It could be about TV shows or movies that have similar themes or stories. It will be a way to talk about which, in my view, is the better. This time, I’ll be pitting two horror anthologies against each other… it’s Creepshow versus Trick ‘r Treat!
I’m a huge horror fan and grew up with the genre in the 80s and 90s, letting it soak into my skin. Amidst all the sub-genres of horror, I’m a lover of the horror anthology. Whether it’s VHS, Tales of Halloween,...

Happy Monday, guys! For today’s installment of our ongoing “From Streams to Screams” series, we’re taking a moment to celebrate one of my favorite storytelling aspects in genre cinema: anthology films. The best part about horror anthologies, to me, is the fact that they often have something in them for every type of genre fan, which means that if you’re reading this, most likely there’s going to be something in this list you’ll enjoy.

Yolanda Ramke was browsing social media when she spotted a tweet from Mike Flanagan, creator/showrunner of Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, complimenting her and her co-director Ben Howling on Cargo.
Thrilled, Ramke sent off a grateful response to Flanagan. That prompted her Us agent, CAA’s Matt Martin, who knew a second series was in the works, to get in touch with the co-executive producer, Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy.
