Located in Ueno area, this little hotel has the basic amenities ; free wifi within the lobby, a relatively spacious room for 2 and a nice indoor hot spring in B1. It is just 5 mins away from Ueno JR station and Keisei Line ( which you can take to bring you to Narita airport directly ). Ueno has lots of little shops, convienient stores, and myriads of japanese food stores to choose from! Staffs speak minimal English, but they will try their best to assist you in your enquires.
This is in fact my second time staying with them in 2012, and I will not hesistate to come back again! :)

I booked this hotel because it's near the places I want to go to; in a market where I can try local food and shop without straining my budget; and near the train stations (about 5-minute walk) One downside is that it's probably a little difficult to find (Tokyo addresses are confusing if you're a tourist I suppose). I suggest asking the friendly people at the tourist center in the Keisei station - they'll point you to the right direction. I had a bit of trouble when I was checking in because my credit card was rejected twice; I don't think that the staff and I understood each other - their manager sorted it anyway. The room is always clean, fast wifi. a bit small, but we don't really mind - we're out for most of the day. The air conditioning in the room where we stayed in though...I guess it's alright since it was still spring when we went to Tokyo, but it won't be enough in the summer months. They provide bathroom amenities and sleepwear, so you don't need to worry about that. It's clean, convenient and it suited our needs.

Overall: I would like to stay again for visiting Ueno area.

1. Reservation
I have booked a double room via a Japanese website. The type of room and rate I have booked is not shown on an English website of the same agent.
2. Check-in & check-out
Check-in time is 2pm and check-out time is noon. You can stay relaxed for longer time.
Reception was managed only 1-3 stuffs, but I did not wait for check-in and check-out.
3. Room
Room was clean and well maintained, but there were slight smell of cigarette due to all the room of Hotel Marutani are smoking room (Hotel Marutani Annex is completely non-smoking). Air cleaner is available on the reception.
The noise from outside was not heard. I have deeply slept.
WiFi in the room is free of charge.
4. Public area
Lobby having souvenir shop is small. There is one big table and about 10 chairs.
Free English/Spanish/Korean/Chinese basic sightseeing guide are available.
Highly recommended point of this hotel is public bath. It opens 3pm-8am.
The temperature of water in the bath is hot.
5. Breakfast
You can choose Japanese style or Western. The Japanese one is standard level.
6. Location
Just only 4-5 min walk from Hirokoji-guchi exit of JR Ueno station.
There are many restaurants, bars, coffee shops and convenience stores.
Very very nice location.

The hotel is located near JR ueno, metro and keisei ueno. It was easy to get meal and shopping. But the hotel had very bad smoking room, very bad smell like you are smoking. There was smoke stained at the ceiling and wall. The hotel staffs were poor english speaker, difficult to communicate. At this time I were here, they made mistake about my booking resulting in I got double payment and they refused for that mistake and responsibility.

I am quite surprised that Hotel Marutani is not getting the love it deserves. This hotel offers good value for money and is very close to JR Ueno station (Hirokoji exit). You can also easily get here through JR Okachimachi station as well. My only complaint is Hotel Marutani's english sign is not easily visible hence, it took me quite some time to find it. I had to ask the receptionist from Hotel Marutani annex to point me to the right Marutani hotel. (The two hotels are just 20 steps apart).

I picked a single japanese style room. It is relatively more spacious than the other hotels I checked into. Free wifi is also available as well as complimentary teabags.

Overall, i think Ueno area is a great place to be your base in Tokyo. I used to believe it was Shinagawa where I previously stayed but now changed my mind. Ueno is not as heavily crowded as Shinjuku or Shibuya but has all the amenities/shops you need for you last minute shopping.

This is probably my fourth time staying here, and still loving it :) Its just a couple of minutes walk away from Keisei station ( which means getting in and from airport is very convienient, regardless you are taking the slow Keisei line or the Skyliner), and probably 5 minutes away from the JR line which leads to all other parts of Tokyo easily. Room was adequate ; nothing too fancy, but basic amenities were more than enough to suffice. Free wifi is definitely and bonus, and hard to come by in Tokyo hotels. Will come back again if decide to drop by Tokyo for a couple of days :)

Fantastic location, in the heart of Ueno's market area. Definitely no shortage of food, shopping, sights or transport. Very quick walk to Ueno's Metro, JR and the Keisei Skyliner to Narita airport. Also close to Uneno Park, Zoo, The National Museum and Shinobazu Pond. A bit further, but walkable to Akihabara, the University or Yanaka as well. Some have complained about cleanliness, but I had a budget traditional room and it was very clean, and cleaned everyday. Did not smell like smoke either. Western or Japanese breakfast available and they have laundry machines you can use (and lock with a code), near the Onsen in the basement (which you can also use). Staff did not have a lot of english, but had enough, and was very helpful and friendly. Not 4 or 5 star place of course, but perfectly fine for most.

Its location is at the center of the city. You can enjoy shopping while having some great place for food right in front of the hotel. Also, the hotel is only 10 mins away from the train station on foot. So, it is very comfortable to get on train to travel around the city and come back to the hotel when exhausted.

The facilities in hotel is well-prepared. They have everything essential for travelers to backpackers. Free wifi is available here.

Rooms are divided into 2 types; smoking room and non-smoking room. The hotel staff are helpful but they sometimes frown and look unfriendly. Nevertheless, it didn't bother me much because I spent most of the time outside the hotel and came back only when I need a bed and a bath.

If you're looking a comfortable budget hotel, Marutani is one of the best choices.
