Even if you’re not a Halloween person, October means spooky season. It feels like every brand, store, — and yes, every streamer, finds ways to incorporate themes of haunting and horror. Disney+ started early, with the September premiere of “Agatha All Along,” which will air new episodes for the next several weeks. In October, the streamer will debut “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” an expansion of the popular Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” which aired from 2007 to 2012.
And of course Hulu has “Huluween,” a celebration of the scariest titles either premiering on the streamer for the first time or simply highlighted from its existing library. That includes films like “Late Night with the Devil,” the series “Reginald the Vampire,” FX’s “American Horror Stories”, a Halloween specials from “Family Guy” and “Solar Opposites,” a docuseries on witch hunting, and much more.

AMC made a bet earlier this year that licensing a number of its shows to Netflix would help them find more viewers. That bet appears to have paid off.
Two AMC shows, Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches, are among the top 10 streaming titles for the week of Aug. 19-25. They were added to Netflix at the beginning of that week as part of a deal struck in July to place about a dozen AMC shows on the service, complete with branding as the “AMC Collection.” (The shows will be available for 12 months.)
It’s not new territory for AMC, which partially credited Netflix for a huge spike in ratings for Breaking Bad’s final season and has also licensed The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, among others, to the streamer in the past.
Dark Winds drew 929 million minutes of viewing for the week, good for fourth place overall.

Two years on from being promoted to Co-Chairmen of WME, Christian Muirhead and Richard Weitz gave one of their first public interviews, talking about the future of the entertainment business, and in particular, AI, movies on streaming, the future of Paramount and Fast channel services such as Tubi.
“Despite the challenges and the disruption, we have real confidence in the power of art, so we feel really good about the future,” said Muirhead at the Ft’s Business of Entertainment conference.
Muirhead and Weitz were promoted in September 2022, succeeding Lloyd Braun. Muirhead came from the world of corporate communications, while Weitz was an agent.

As of September 2024, "South Park" has aired 328 episodes over 26 seasons. Not all of these episodes are winners, but there've been enough classics to make it seem wild for anyone to think they could narrow it down to just a top 10. Nevertheless, I'm going to try, and all I ask is that you show me some grace when I inevitably exclude some of your favorites.
For full disclosure, I should confess that I am a big fan of Butters, Tweek, and pre-Tegridy Farms Randy, so don't be surprised if they seem a little over-represented. I also still hold a grudge against Cartman for eating all the skin off those KFC wings, so I'm not gonna include many episodes where Cartman gets a win. I prefer the episodes where Cartman suffers or is punished for his lifetime of horrendous behavior. In other words, "With Apologies to Jesse Jackson" is getting snubbed here,...

Netflix released the first half of Emily in Paris‘ fourth season Aug. 15, and as a result got just over half of the tune-in for the show’s last full-season premiere.
The dramedy starring Lily Collins gathered 792 million minutes of viewing in the United States for its premiere week, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. That was good for third place among original series and ninth overall, but was also down 43 percent from the 1.39 billion minutes for the first week of season three’s release — which featured all 10 episodes of that installment, as opposed to five this time out.
The previous week’s top two shows, Prison Break and The Umbrella Academy, held their spots for the week of Aug. 12-18 — and their numbers were consistent as well. Prison Break actually ticked up a little to 1.61 billion minutes of viewing (versus 1.6 billion the week before), while The Umbrella Academy (1.39 billion) was...

Prison Break held a steady audience for the second consecutive week, raking in another 1.6B minutes viewed from August 12 to 18. That put it in first place on Nielsen’s streaming charts, fueled by its return to Netflix in July.
According to Nielsen, Hispanic viewers accounted for nearly a third of Prison Break‘s audience during this interval, as the company says that demo is a “major driver” of the show’s viewership.
The overall list had a refreshing amount of streaming original content due in part to the fact that, as Nielsen points out, the end of the Olympics brought a lull in sports, which generally does coincide with a boost in streaming.
Netflix was responsible for all four of the streaming originals on the list, starting with The Umbrella Academy in second place, tallying 1.3B minutes viewed in Season 4’s first full week on the platform. However, it did...

Sitcom crossovers usually make some kind of sense — Laverne and Shirley lived in the same Milwaukee as the Happy Days gang. Lisa Kudrow starred on both Friends and Mad About You. The Simpsons and Family Guy were both animated. But none of that prepared us for the time Ray Barone showed up on The Nanny.
About the only thing those two shows had in common were that both aired on CBS during the 1990s and both featured characters who lived in New York state. So no one saw it coming during Season Five of The Nanny when Fran attended her high school reunion and ran into an unexpected classmate. Standing in the buffet line, she asks a guy in a suit to hand her a piece of quiche. He turns around, and what do you know? It’s Raymond.
The jokes are as corny as the quiche. “You know, Raymond,...

In an alternate TV universe, Fox is the home of The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park and a couple unsightly skid marks.
Long before Trey Parker and Matt Stone were the co-heads of a billion-dollar multimedia franchise and the co-owners of the almost-as-expensive Casa Bonita, the pair were the writers, producers, animators and stars of two of the earliest viral videos in comedy history. While attending the University of Colorado in 1992, the pair created an animated short film called The Spirit of Christmas featuring a group of schoolboys who bring Frosty the Snowman to life, only for the iconic animated character to turn homicidal.
Three years later, Fox executive Brian Graden would stumble upon the original The Spirit of Christmas video and commission the Colorado duo to create a second festive short film, this time featuring a bitter feud between Santa Claus and Jesus Christ. Upon the success of the second sketch,...

Adam West has had countless adventures as Batman in live action. He portrayed the Caped Crusader in the legendary ABC TV series, which ran for three seasons from 1966 to 1968, and its live-action spinoff movie. In addition to this spectacular run as one of the most fun portrayals of Batman, he had a wonderful voice acting career. Many may remember him for his voice roles on The Fairly Odd Parents or Family Guy, but his career with DC was a huge part of his animated exploits.
West directly continued his time as Batman in The New Adventures of Batman (1977) all the way through to 1985's Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians. He also played Batman on Robot Chicken's third DC special, with an appearance from Burt Ward as well.

Fox pushed back The Simpsons season 36 and moved Family Guy season 23 to the midseason to promote its new Fall 2024 Animation Domination drop, Universal Basic Guys. I get it. Networks practice this method to give stamina to their premieres and attract audiences. However, Fox sidelining two of their popular shows that made Sunday's Animation Domination block the TV Highlight of the Week was a horrendous error.
I gave Universal Basic Guys the benefit of the doubt ahead of the pilot that dropped on Sept. 8, as it was a new show revolving around the average middle-class American trying to make the best out of life with the familiar circumstances we all periodically face. Unfortunately, I'm afraid this animated comedy won't make it past one season, despite an early second season renewal ordered in May.

In an entertaining survey on Reddit, fans of beloved sitcom The Big Bang Theory were asked who among its characters would be the champion if they could swear. Most TV sitcoms do not condone swearing but the commentator wondered what would the results be if they were allowed to cuss.
The results indicated that Kaley Cuoco’s character Penny would come out tops in this. Quite a number of comments stated that her character would gladly drop F-bombs everywhere if it was allowed in the show. Jim Parsons also portrayed one of the lead roles as Sheldon, but most comments stated he couldn’t get a win over Penny.

It was another slow week for streaming originals from August 5 to August 11, with just one making it onto Nielsen’s overall streaming list. That was Netflix’s Umbrella Academy, which racked up nearly 1.5B viewing minutes in the week of the Season 4 premiere.
This isn’t exactly surprising, as the series was already seeing a boost in viewership in anticipation of the new season the week prior. It popped on the streaming originals list at No. 8 with 287M minutes viewed.
It’s a strong performance for the Netflix series, good enough for second place, just behind Prison Break, which is the latest licensed title to find a second life on the streamer. For Umbrella Academy, it’s still a bit of a deflation compared to Season 3, which secured more than 2B minutes viewed during its debut week in 2022 despite a more competitive streaming environment, premiering on the heels of the...

It’s one thing to have a self-deprecating sense of humor. It’s something else entirely to appear on a sitcom as an incredible a-hole version of yourself. While plenty of stars have cameoed as themselves over the years — hell, James Van Der Beek had a regular role as James Van Der Beek on Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23 — here are five celebrities who played unflattering versions of their real-life personas…

But “we called her manager up, who loved it, and who then talked to Lori, and she said: ‘I’m in, I’m totally game,’” Curb...

In its second week on Netflix, Prison Break rocketed to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
The former Fox series, which also streams on Hulu, was added to Netflix on July 29 and made its streaming chart debut that week. For the week of Aug. 5-11, it more than doubled the previous frame’s viewing time, rising from 758 million to 1.6 billion minutes. (Hulu, incidentally, is developing a new version of Prison Break with Mayans Mc showrunner Elgin James.)
Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy — whose final season premiered Aug. 8 — was the top original series for the week, coming in at 1.46 billion minutes of viewing. That’s a strong showing, but also down a good amount from the 2.45 billion minutes the show recorded the week of its season three premiere in June 2022.

The devil is in the details, or in the case of Hysteria!, in a local heavy metal band.
Hysteria! is one of two original series Peacock has lined up to scare the bejesus out of viewers this Halloween.
The other is Teacup, based on Robert McCammon’s 1988 science fiction horror novel Stinger, set to premiere on October 10.
(Photo: NBCU)
Horror icon Bruce Campbell guest stars in Hysteria! as the town’s police chief, so you know it’s going to be good.
Here’s everything else we know so far about Hysteria!
What is Hysteria About?
Set in the fictional town of Happy Hallow, Michigan, in the 1980s, Hysteria! explores the “satanic panic” of that era.
The story follows a group of high school kids who decide to put the pedal to the metal, literally, by rebranding their heavy metal band as a Satanic metal band.
Why would they do such a devilish thing?...

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire started way back in 1996, with the release of its first book, A Game of Thrones. Adapted into a TV series more than a decade and a half later, the book series was still not finished. However, it would be another eight years before the show came to a conclusion, giving Martin plenty of time to wrap up his epic fantasy series.
It has been five years since the show ended, and there is still no sign of the second last book in the series, Winds of Winter, which will be followed by the grand finale, A Dream of Spring.

Nielsen’s Top 10 list featured no original titles for the first time ever as audiences set their sights on the athletes competing for the gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics in the last week of July.
“This is a notable interval in streaming not because of the heights it achieved nor records it set, but because streaming levels actually decreased significantly in the face of an onslaught of Olympic programming,” the firm wrote in its report covering July 29-Aug. 4. “By comparison, the first week of July had a full slate (ten out of ten) of billion-minute titles, whereas this week featured only two. Peacock bucked the trend with an extraordinarily strong week, driven by simultaneous coverage of the Paris Games.”

The Netflix original film “The Union” was the third-most-streamed title of the Aug. 12-18 viewing window, per Nielsen — a feat, as movies are disadvantaged on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, having shorter running times than the TV series they’re up against.
With 1.3 billion minutes watched, the Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg-led film came only behind “Prison Break” (1.6 billion minutes watched) and “The Umbrella Academy” (1.4 billion), which were also the previous week’s top two titles. The former was recently added to Netflix after concluding its run on Fox in 2018, though it was already available on Hulu, and the latter having just dropped its fourth and final season on Netflix.
In fourth place, up from seventh place the week before, was “Fire Country.” The CBS drama was streamed for 1.2 billion minutes across Paramount+, where it has been available since its debut, and Netflix, where it was recently added.

The Olympics brought in very strong streaming numbers for Peacock during the first full week of the games. For other streamers? Not so much.
No original series or movie made the overall top 10 titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of July 29-Aug. 4. That’s a first in the four-year history of the weekly rankings, according to the ratings service. Streaming levels outside of the Olympics “decreased significantly” during the week, Nielsen says.
House of the Dragon, however, continued its strong showing on Max (since the show also airs on HBO, Nielsen considers it an acquired series rather than an original). The Game of Thrones prequel topped the week leading up to its second season finale with 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, up from 1.04 billion a week earlier and its best mark of the season so far.

The Simpsons has obviously changed in a number of ways over the past 35 years, from the evolving animation style, to the shifting voice cast, to the fact that they’re probably not going to be making any more jokes about the controversial racial politics of cartoon magnate and theme park founder Roger Meyers Sr.
The show also used to regularly feature cutaway gags, in which the primary narrative is interrupted with flashbacks, daydreams or scenes in alternate locations that serve as punchlines to something the characters have been discussing — such as Homer’s vision of attending Maggie’s wedding with two vending machines on each arm, or the brief shot of Springfield Elementary’s Lunchlady Doris feeding old gym mats into a meat grinder.
But while this was once a staple of the show’s storytelling technique, that’s no longer the case, mostly thanks to Family Guy.

Nielsen is the most reliable name in the business when it comes to accurately reporting TV ratings. The trade-off is that it takes a while for Nielsen to sort through the data, hence why we're only now getting the streaming ratings for the week of Monday, July 22 through Sunday, July 28.

Family Guy will have another network home this September. In a recent licensing deal, Disney granted permission for Paramount to broadcast on their network, Comedy Central. The animated comedy follows the Griffin family's chaotic and often dysfunctional life in Quahog, Rhode Island.
Deadline was the first to report the deal between the major networks, and Family Guy will join Beavis and Butt-head, Futurama, and Comedy Central's very own South Park in the primetime schedule. The negotiation will not reflect Family Guy being removed from Fox, Fxx, or its streamer, Hulu. It just means the show will have an additional channel to air, accumulating more fans into Family Guy's strong fanbase.
Season 23 will premiere on Fox's 2025 midseason schedule and be part of the Animation Domination block, a move that hasn't been made in nearly two decades. The network's decision is disappointing as Fox had to make room for their new show,...

Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming list was a sea of acquired content the week of July 22, with House of the Dragon and Cobra Kai as the only two streaming originals to break through.
In first place was Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which landed on Netflix that week, marking its first appearance on streaming since its theatrical release in March. The film racked up 1.4B minutes viewed, and Nielsen says that the title over-indexed among Hispanic and Latin audiences, which accounted for 24% of all viewership.
There may come a time when an animated Blue Heeler isn’t dominating Disney+, but it hasn’t arrived yet. Bluey took second place on the list during this interval with 1.1B viewing minutes. The series has now made it on Nielsen’s overall chart 76 times, and this was its 17th consecutive week tracking above 1B minutes.

Most people who watched Peacock in the week of July 22-28 were watching the Olympics — but two other shows on the NBCUniversal streamer also had a pretty good week.
The swords-and-sandals drama Those About to Die moved into the top 10 original series for the week (it premiered on July 18), likely with an assist from heavy promotion during NBCUniversal’s Olympics telecasts. The series recorded 399 million minutes of viewing time for the week.
Love Island also stayed strong in the week after its July 21 season finale. Though it came down from two straight weeks above a billion minutes, the show’s 724 million minutes of viewing (including earlier seasons on Hulu and Netflix) is very strong for an unscripted series not showing any new episodes during the measured week.

For a while, Maya Rudolph was criminally underappreciated by the TV academy; by 2019 she had only been nominated for three Emmys. But then it’s like a switch was flipped and suddenly it was raining Emmys. She won five times over the next four years: Best Comedy Guest Actress twice for “Saturday Night Live” (2020-2021) and Best Character Voice-Over Performance three times for “Big Mouth”. She’s nominated in both categories again this year, as well as in Best Comedy Actress for her Apple TV+ series “Loot.” Of those, she’s projected to win the voice-over award, which would put her in elite company.
To date only three actors have collected four trophies for character voice-over performances: “The Simpsons” stars Hank Azaria and Dan Castellaneta and “Family Guy” mastermind Seth MacFarlane. That includes years when Best Voice-Over Performance was a juried award and combined character voice-overs with narrators. Character and...

Sutton Stracke is setting the record straight about the fate of her Beverly Hills store.
Fans sounded the alarm over her Sutton concept boutique over the weekend when rumors spread that a for-lease sign had been placed outside.
Sutton, who recently wrapped filming The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 14, took to Instagram to silence the naysayers.
However, the post is more like a riddle because she discusses many things without providing many facts.
She did a pretty good job if she wanted to confuse her fans.
“I hear those streets are talking about my store,” she started, adding:

“Good things are coming,” she promised while saying she enjoys West Hollywood.
The reality TV star then tagged many of her brands and stated they “are only getting better.

Seth MacFarlane’s Ted films introduced audiences to the fun and foul-mouthed teddy bear. The unique premise of the film delighted fans as they got to see Ted’s wild and bizarre adventures mixed with the R-rated dialogues. The two films had Mark Wahlberg in the lead and his hilarious banter with Ted left audiences in splits. Despite the films being box office successes, MacFarlane shifted to TV with the IP.

The prequel series was released this year and it proved that the IP still had so much potential that could be explored better in long-form storytelling. The series was renewed for a second season, but a new report states the new season was almost canceled with Universal execs already having new plans for the franchise.

Sometimes, the price of telling a risky joke is a bad review, but that’s not the same thing as censorship — otherwise, Matt Groening would be in prison.
In the nearly 35 years since The Simpsons took over TV comedy, Groening has seen innumerable cultural debates over line-crossing in comedy come and go while artfully avoiding excess participation in any such dialogue. Though The Simpsons has long faced calls for censorship or increased sensitivity when it comes specific jokes — even from the literal censors at Fox, whom Groening generally ignores — the series doesn’t habitually thumb its nose at such critics the way their rivals over at Family Guy so often do. At the same time, The Simpsons doesn’t exactly engage in what most comedy fans would call “edgy humor,” so it’s not often that the series ever finds itself smack-dab in the center of the comedy culture war...

There are a lot of reasons why "The Simpsons" has lasted as long as it has, but a big one is just how fun those "Treehouse of Horror" anthology episodes always are. Even long past the golden age of the show, these Halloween specials reliably breathe new life into the series; they're funny and sharp, and they allow the show to play around with all sorts of different tones, genres, and animation styles. From the "Death Note" segment in 2022 to the "Coraline" segment in 2017 to the "Tron" segment in 1997, "The Simpsons" has always used these specials as opportunities to show us something we've never seen from them before.
But how'd the writers get the idea for the special in the first place? In a 2018 interview, renowned "Simpsons" writer Mike Reiss explained how he and the other writers were big horror movie fans, name-checking the "Evil Dead" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise in particular.

The Boys ascended to its highest mark ever in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of its fourth season finale, and Netflix’s movie Hillbilly Elegy had a resurgence after Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance — whose memoir is the source material for the film — became the Republican nominee for vice president.
The Boys recorded 1.33 billion minutes of viewing time on Prime Video for the week of July 15-21, finishing first among all titles in Nielsen’s rankings for the first time (the season four finale debuted July 18). That’s the biggest viewing total for the series that Nielsen has ever recorded — slightly ahead of the 1.29 billion minutes it had the week of June 17-23.
Two other original series crossed the billion-minute mark for the week: Cobra Kai hit 1.09 billion minutes for the week of its final season premiere (the first of three parts) on Netflix, and Love Island had 1.05 billion across Hulu,...

“The Boys” achieved its best one-week viewership ever with the release of its Season 4 finale. Amazon Prime Video’s superhero satire reached 1.3 billion minutes watched during the July 15-21 viewing window, during which the finale was available for four days.
Along with beating its own personal best — and claiming the No. 1 spot on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for the first time — “The Boys” also enjoyed its eighth week at more than 1 billion minutes watched and its 20th week on the Top 10, which are both records for Amazon titles.
In the No. 2 position was “House of the Dragon,” which had its fifth consecutive week past the 1 billion mark, this time notching 1.1 billion minutes streamed. This is especially impressive given that the series airs on HBO’s linear channel, meaning that a chunk of its viewership isn’t accounted for on the chart.
