The Single Aperture Large Telescope for Universe Studies (SALTUS) is a mission concept for a far-infrared observatory developed under the recent Astrophysics Probe Explorer opportunity from NASA. The enabling element of the program is a 14 m diameter inflatable primary mirror, M1. Due to its importance to SALTUS and potentially other space observatories, this paper focuses entirely on M1. We present a historical overview of inflatable systems, illustrating that M1 is the logical next step in the evolution of such systems. The process of design and manufacture is addressed. We examine how M1 performs in its environment in terms of operating temperature, interaction with the solar wind, and shape change due to non-penetrating particles. We investigate the longevity of the inflatant in detail and show it meets mission lifetime requirements with ample margin and discuss the development and testing to realize the flight M1.

We describe the space observatory architecture and mission design of the SALTUS mission, a NASA Astrophysics Probe Explorer concept. SALTUS will address key far-infrared science using a 14-m diameter <45 K primary reflector (M1) and will provide unprecedented levels of spectral sensitivity for planet, solar system, and galactic evolution studies, and cosmic origins. Drawing from Northrop Grumman's extensive NASA mission heritage, the observatory flight system is based on the LEOStar-3 spacecraft platform to carry the SALTUS Payload. The Payload is comprised of the inflation control system (ICS), Sunshield Module (SM), Cold Corrector Module (CCM), Warm Instrument Electronics Module, and Primary Reflector Module (PRM). The 14-m M1 is an off-axis inflatable membrane radiatively cooled by a two-layer sunshield (~1,000 m2 per layer). The CCM corrects for residual aberration from M1 and delivers a focused beam to two instruments - High Resolution Receiver (HiRX) and SAFARI-Lite. The CCM and PRM reside atop a truss-based composite deck which also provides a platform for the attitude control system. The 5-year mission lifetime is driven by a two-consumable architecture: the propellant system and the ICS. The Core Interface Module (CIM), a multi-faceted composite truss structure, provides a load path with high stiffness, mechanical attachment, and thermal separation between the Payload and spacecraft. The SM attaches outside the CIM with its aft end integrating directly to the bus. The spacecraft maintains an attitude off M1's boresight with respect to the Sun line to facilitate the <45 K thermal environment. SALTUS will reside in a Sun-Earth halo L2 orbit with a maximum Earth slant range of 1.8 million km thereby reducing orbit transfer delta-v. The instantaneous field of regard provides two continuous 20-deg viewing zones around the ecliptic poles resulting in full sky coverage in six months.

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. In addition, LEIA is able to carry out scientific observations to find new transients and to monitor known sources in the soft X-ray band, albeit limited useful observing time available.

In this paper, we firstly calibrate the Amati relation (the $E_{\rm p}-E_{\rm iso}$ correlation) of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) at low redshifts ($z<0.8$) via Gaussian process by using the type Ia supernovae samples from Pantheon+ under the philosophy that objects at the same redshift should have the same luminosity distance in any cosmology. As a result, this calibration derives the distance moduli of GRBs at high redshifts ($z>0.8$). For an application of these derived distance modulus of GRBs to cosmology, via Gaussian process again, a series of cosmography parameters, which describe kinematics of our Universe, up to the fifth oder and the redshift $z\sim 5$, i.e. the Hubble parameter $H(z)$, the deceleration parameter $q(z)$, the jerk parameter $j(z)$, the snap parameter $s(z)$ and the lerk parameter $l(z)$, are reconstructed from the cosmic observations. The reconstructed cosmography parameters show a transition singularity at $z\sim 6$, it may resort to two possible explanations: one is that the GRBs data points at high redshift $z>5$ are still reliable, it means that new physics beyond the $Λ$CDM model happens; another one is that the quality and quantity of GRBs data points at high redshift $z>5$ are not good enough to give any viable prediction of the kinematics of our Universe. To pin down this problem, more high redshifts $z>5$ cosmic observational are still needed.

In this paper, we have constrained the neutrino mass and mass hierarchy in the $Λ$CDM cosmology with the neutrino mass hierarchy parameter $Δ$, which represents different mass orderings, by using the {\it Planck} 2015 + BAO + SN + $H_{0}$ data set, together with the neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay data. We find that the mass of the lightest neutrinos and the total neutrino mass are no more than $0.035$eV and $0.133$ eV at $95\%$ confidence level, respectively. Comparing the result of our joint analysis with that obtained using cosmological data alone, we find that, by adding the neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay data, the tendency for normal hierarchy has increased a lot. By means of importance sampling, three other priors are taken into account, i.e., the flat logarithmic prior on the absolute value of the neutrino hierarchy parameter $Δ$, the flat linear prior on the total neutrino mass $Σm_ν$, and the flat logarithmic prior on $Σm_ν$. We find that the preference for the normal hierarchy is in agreement whatever what kinds of priors we choose. Finally, we make a Bayesian model analysis about four priors and we find that flat-linear and the flat logarithmic priors on $Σm_ν$ are the most favored priors.

In this paper, we study the cosmic constraint to $w$CDM model via $118$ strong gravitational lensing systems which are complied from SLACS, BELLS, LSD and SL2S surveys, where the ratio between two angular diameter distances $D^{obs} = D_A(z_l,z_s)/D_A(0,z_s)$ is taken as a cosmic observable. To obtain this ratio, we adopt two strong lensing models: one is the singular isothermal sphere model (SIS), the other one is the power-law density profile (PLP) model. Via the Markov Chain Mote Carlo method, the posterior distribution of the cosmological model parameters space is obtained. The results show that the cosmological model parameters are not sensitive to the parameterized forms of the power-law index $γ$. Furthermore, the PLP model gives a relative tighter constraint to the cosmological parameters than that of the SIS model. The predicted value of $Ω_m=0.31^{+0.44}_{-0.24}$ by SIS model is compatible with that obtained by {\it Planck}2015: $Ω_{m}=0.313\pm0.013$. However, the value of $Ω_m=0.15^{+0.13}_{-0.11}$ based on the PLP model is smaller and has $1.25σ$ tension with that obtained by {\it Planck}2015 result. This discrepancy maybe come from the systematic errors.

We show the possibility that the observational results of the primordial gravitational waves from Planck and BICEP2 for the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ can be reconciled when an early dark energy was included. This early dark energy behaves like a radiation component at very early epoch. This is equivalent to induce additional number of effective neutrino species: $ΔN_{eff}=[\frac{7}{8}(\frac{4}{11})^{4/3}]^{-1}ρ_{de}(a)/ρ_γ(a)$, where $ρ_γ(a)$ is the photon energy density and the numerical factors arise from converting to effective neutrino species. And $ρ_{de}(a)$ is the energy density of early dark energy. Combining the Planck temperature data, the WMAP9 polarization data, and the baryon acoustic oscillation data with and without BICEP2 data, we find that in this early dark energy model the tension between the observations from Planck and BICEP2 was relived at $2σ$ regions. But it cannot be removed completely due to the small ratio of early dark energy constrained by the other cosmic observations. As a byproduct, the tension between observed values of Hubble parameter from Planck and the direct measurement of the Hubble constant was removed in this early dark energy model.

Then we show that the conventional 4D quintessence and phantom models of dark energy could be recovered from the $5D$ cosmological solutions. By using the phase-plane analysis to study the stability of evolution of the $5D$ models, we find that the conventional 4D late-time attractor solution is also recovered. This attractor solution shows that the scale factors of the phantom dominated universes in both the 4D and $5D$ theories will reach infinity in a finite time and the universes will be ended at a new kind of spacetime singularity at which everything will be annihilated. We also find that the repulsive force of the phantom may provide us with a mechanics to explain the bounce.

A five-dimensional Ricci-flat cosmological solution is studied by assuming that the induced 4D matter contains two components: the usual fluid for dark matter as well as baryons and a scalar field with an exponential potential for dark energy. With use of the phase-plane analysis it is shown that there exist two late-time attractors one of which corresponds to a universe dominated by the scalar field alone and the other is a scaling solution in which the energy density of the scalar field remains proportional to that of the dark matter. It is furthermore shown that for this 5D scaling solution the universe expands with the same rate as in the 4D FRW models and not relies on which 4D hypersurface the universe is located in the 5D manifold.
