The code FADO is the first publicly available population spectral synthesis tool that treats the contribution from ionised gas to the observed emission self-consistently. We study the impact of the nebular contribution on the determination of the star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, and consequent effect on the star-forming main sequence (SFMS) at low redshift. We applied FADO to the spectral database of the SDSS to derive the physical properties of galaxies. As a comparison, we used the data in the MPA-JHU catalogue, which contains the properties of SDSS galaxies derived without the nebular contribution. We selected a sample of SF galaxies with H$α$ and H$β$ flux measurements, and we corrected the fluxes for the nebular extinction through the Balmer decrement. We then calculated the H$α$ luminosity to estimate the SFR. Then, by combining the stellar mass and SFR estimates from FADO and MPA-JHU, the SFMS was obtained. The H$α$ flux estimates are similar between FADO and MPA-JHU. Because the H$α$ flux was used as tracer of the SFR, FADO and MPA-JHU agree in their SFR. The stellar mass estimates are slightly higher for FADO than for MPA-JHU on average. However, considering the uncertainties, the differences are negligible. With similar SFR and stellar mass estimates, the derived SFMS is also similar between FADO and MPA-JHU. Our results show that for SDSS normal SF galaxies, the additional modelling of the nebular contribution does not affect the retrieved fluxes and consequentially also does not influence SFR estimators based on the extinction-corrected H$α$ luminosity. For the stellar masses, the results point to the same conclusion. These results are a consequence of the fact that the vast majority of normal SF galaxies in the SDSS have a low nebular contribution.

We searched for such galaxies in the cluster MS 0451.6-0305 at z~0.5, based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging covering a region of about 6x6 Mpc^2, an eight magnitude ground-based catalogue with photometric redshifts, and a spectroscopic redshift catalogue. We defined as cluster members a spectroscopic redshift sample of 359 galaxies within 4sigma_v of the mean cluster velocity, and a photometric redshift sample covering the [0.48,0.61] range. We searched for RPS galaxies and tested the error on their classification with a Zooniverse collaboration, and computed the phase space diagram for the spectroscopic sample. We ran the LePhare stellar population synthesis code to analyze and compare the properties of RPS and non-RPS galaxies. We find 56 and 273 RPS candidates in the spectroscopic and photometric redshift samples, respectively, distributed throughout the cluster and tending to avoid high density regions. The phase space diagram gives the percentages of virialized, backsplash, and infall galaxies. RPS galaxy candidates typically show rather high star formation rates, young ages, and relatively low masses. This study confirms that RPS galaxies host, on average, younger stellar populations and strongly form stars when compared with non-RPS counterparts. The fact that RPS candidates with spectroscopic and with photometric redshifts have comparable properties shows that large samples of such objects could be gathered based on multi-band photometry only, a promising result in view of future very large imaging surveys.

Galaxies in clusters undergo several phenomena such as ram pressure stripping and tidal interactions, that can trigger or quench their star formation and, in some cases, lead to galaxies acquiring unusual shapes and long tails. We searched for jellyfish galaxy candidates in a sample of 40 clusters from the DAFT/FADA and CLASH surveys covering the redshift range 0.2<z<0.9. In MACS J0717.5+3745 (MACS0717), our large spatial coverage and abundant sampling of spectroscopic redshifts allowed us to pursue a detailed analysis of jellyfish galaxy candidates in this cluster and its extended filament. We looked at the Hubble Space Telescope images of all the cluster galaxies (based on redshifts), and classified them as a function of their likeliness to be jellyfish galaxies, and give catalogues of jellyfish candidates with positions, redshifts, magnitudes, and projected distance to the respective cluster centre. We found 81 jellyfish candidates in the extended region around MACS0717, and 97 in 22 other clusters. Jellyfish galaxy candidates in MACS0717 tend to avoid the densest regions of the cluster, while this does not appear to be the case in the other clusters. For 79 galaxies in MACS0717 and 31 in other clusters, we computed the best stellar population fits with LePhare through the GAZPAR interface. We find that jellyfish candidates tend to be star forming objects, with blue colours, young ages, high star formation rates and specific star formation rates. In a SFR versus stellar mass diagram, jellyfish galaxy candidates appear to have somewhat larger SFRs than non-jellyfish star forming galaxies Based on several arguments, the jellyfish candidates identified in MACS0717 seem to have fallen rather recently into the cluster. A very rough estimate of the proportions of jellyfish galaxies in the studied clusters is about 10%.

Taking advantage of HST CANDELS data, we analyze the lowest redshift (z<0.5) massive galaxies in order to disentangle their structural constituents and study possible faint non-axis-symmetric features. Due to the excellent HST spatial resolution for intermediate-z objects, they are hard to model by purely automatic parametric fitting algorithms. We performed careful single and double Sérsic fits to their galaxy surface brightness profiles. We also compare the model color profiles with the observed ones and also derive multi-component global effective radii attempting to obtain a better interpretation of the mass-size relation. Additionally, we test the robustness of our measured structural parameters via simulations. We find that the Sérsic index does not offer a good proxy for the visual morphological type for our sample of massive galaxies. Our derived multi-component effective radii give a better description of the size of our sample galaxies than those inferred from single Sérsic models with GALFIT. Our galaxy population lays on the scatter of the local mass-size relation, indicating that these massive galaxies do not experience a significant growth in size since z~0.5. Interestingly the few outliers are late-type galaxies, indicating that spheroids must reach the local mass-size relation earlier. For most of our sample galaxies, both single and multi-component Sérsic models with GALFIT show substantial systematic deviations from the observed SBPs in the outskirts. These residuals may be partly due to several factors, namely a non-optimal data reduction for low surface brightness features, the existence of prominent stellar haloes for massive galaxies and could also arise from conceptual shortcomings of parametric 2D image decomposition tools. They consequently propagate into galaxy color profiles.

The properties of galaxies are known to be affected by their environment, but although galaxies in clusters and groups have been quite thoroughly investigated, little is known presently on galaxies belonging to filaments of the cosmic web, and on the properties of the filaments themselves. We investigate here the properties of the rich cluster MACSJ0717.5+3745 and its extended filament, by analyzing the distribution and fractions of intra-cluster light (ICL) in the core of this cluster and by trying to detect intra-filament light (IFL) in the filament. We analyze the galaxy luminosity function (GLF) of the cluster core and of the filament. We also study the orientations of galaxies in the filament to better constrain the filament properties. This work is based on Hubble Space Telescope archive data, both from the Hubble Frontier Fields in the F435W, F606W, F814W, and F105W bands, and from a mosaic of images in the F606W and F814W bands. The spatial distribution of the ICL is determined with our new wavelet-based software, DAWIS. The GLFs are extracted in the F606W and F814W bands, with a statistical subtraction of the background, and fit with Schechter functions. The galaxy orientations in the filaments are estimated with SExtractor after correction for the Point Spread Function. We detect a large amount of ICL in the cluster core, but no IFL in the cosmic filament. The fraction of ICL in the core peaks in the F606W filter before decreasing with wavelength. Though quite noisy, the GLFs in the filament are notably different from those of field galaxies, with a flatter faint end slope and an excess of bright galaxies. We do not detect a significant alignment of the galaxies in the filament region that was analyzed.

This work is part of a series of papers devoted to investigate the evolution of cluster galaxies during their infall. In the present article we imaged in NIR a selected sample of galaxies through- out the massive cluster Abell 85 (z = 0.055). We obtained (JHK) photometry for 68 objects, reaching 1 mag/arcsec^2 deeper than 2MASS. We use these images to unveil asymmetries in the outskirts of a sample of bright galaxies and develop a new asymmetry index, alpha_An, which allows to quantify the degree of disruption by the relative area occupied by the tidal features on the plane of the sky. We measure the asymmetries for a subsample of 41 large area objects finding clear asymmetries in ten galaxies, most of them being in groups and pairs projected at different clustercentric distances, some of them located beyond R500 . Combining information on the Hi-gas content of blue galaxies and the distribution of sub-structures across Abell 85, with the present NIR asymmetry analysis, we obtain a very powerful tool to confirm that tidal mechanisms are indeed present and are currently affecting a fraction of galaxies in Abell 85. However, when comparing our deep NIR images with UV-blue images of two very disrupted (jellyfish) galaxies in this cluster, we discard the presence of tidal 1 interactions down to our detection limit. Our results suggest that ram-pressure stripping is at the origin of such spectacular disruptions. We conclude that across a complex cluster like Abell 85, environment mechanisms, both gravitational and hydrodynamical, are playing an active role in driving galaxy evolution.

Pseudo-bulges are expected to markedly differ from classical, quasi-monolithically forming bulges in their star formation history (SFH) and chemical abundance patterns. To test this simple expectation, we carry out a comparative structural and spectral synthesis analysis of 106 red, massive galaxies issued from the SDSS, subdivided into bulgeless, pseudo-bulge and classical bulge galaxies according to their photometric characteristics, and further obeying a specific selection to minimize uncertainties in the analysis and ensure an unbiased derivation and comparison of SFHs. Our 2D photometry analysis suggests that disks underlying pseudo-bulges typically have larger exponential scale lengths than bulgeless galaxies, despite similar integral disk luminosities. Spectral synthesis models of the stellar emission within the 3" SDSS fiber aperture reveal a clear segregation of bulgeless and pseudo-bulge galaxies from classical bulges on the luminosity-weighted planes of age-metallicity and mass-metallicity, though a large dispersion is observed within the two former classes. The secular growth of pseudo-bulges is also reflected upon their cumulative stellar mass as a function of time, which is shallower than that for classical bulges. Such results suggest that the centers of bulgeless and pseudo-bulge galaxies substantially differ from those of bulgy galaxies with respect to their SFH and chemical enrichment history, which likely points to different formation/assembly mechanisms.

Mergers of gas-poor galaxies, so-called dry mergers, may play a fundamental role in the assembly of the most massive galaxies, and therefore, in galaxy formation theories. Using the SDSS, we have serendipitously discovered a rare system in the observational and theoretical context, possibly a quintuple dry merger at low redshift. As a follow-up, we have obtained NOT long-slit spectra of the group, in order to measure the individual redshifts and gain insight into its merger fate. Our results show an isolated, low-redshift galaxy group consisting of massive, quiescent, early-type galaxies, composed of two clumps (possibly themselves in the process of merging), which we estimate will hypothetically merge in roughly less than a Gyr. With the possible exception of the high line-of-sight velocity dispersion, the overall properties of the system may be comparable to a compact Shakhbazyan group. However, when the small projected separations and relative mass ratios of the galaxies are taken into account in cosmological simulations, we find that this system is rather unique. We hypothesize that this group is a dry merger, whose fate will result in the assembly of an isolated, massive elliptical galaxy at low redshift.

We present a catalogue of bulgeless galaxies, which includes 19225 objects selected in four of the deepest, largest multi-wavelength datasets available -- COSMOS, AEGIS, GEMS and GOODS -- at intermediate redshift ($0.4 \leq z \leq 1.0$). The morphological classification was provided by the Advanced Camera for Surveys General Catalogue (ACS-GC), which used publicly available data obtained with the ACS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. Rest-frame photometric quantities were derived using kcorrect. We analyse the properties of the sample and the evolution of pure-disc systems with redshift. Very massive [$\log (M_\star/M_{\odot}) > 10.5$] bulgeless galaxies contribute to ~30% of the total galaxy population number density at $z \geq 0.7$, but their number density drops substantially with decreasing redshift. We show that only a negligible fraction of pure discs appear to be quiescent systems, and red sequence bulgeless galaxies show indications of dust-obscured star formation. X-ray catalogues were used to search for X-ray emission within our sample. After visual inspection and detailed parametric morphological fitting we identify 30 AGN that reside in galaxies without a classical bulge. The finding of such peculiar objects at intermediate redshift shows that while AGN growth in merger-free systems is a rare event (0.2% AGN hosts in this sample of bulgeless galaxies), it can indeed happen relatively early in the Universe history.

With the main goal of finding bulgeless galaxies harbouring super massive black holes and showing, at most, just residual star formation activity, we have selected a sample of massive bulgeless red sequence galaxies from the SDSS-DR7, based on the NYU-VAGC catalogue. Multivavelength data were retrieved using EURO-VO tools, and the objects are characterised in terms of degree of star formation and the presence of an AGN. We have found seven objects that are quenched massive galaxies, that have no prominent bulge and that show signs of extra activity in their nuclei, five of them being central in their halo. These objects are rather robust candidates for rare systems that, though devoid of a significant bulge, harbor a supermassive black hole with an activity level likely capable of having halted the star formation through feedback.

We have discovered a number of relatively strong radio sources in the field-of-view of SDSS galaxy clusters which present no optical counterparts down to the magnitude limits of the SDSS. The optically faint radio sources appear as double-lobed or core-jet objects on the FIRST radio images and have projected angular sizes ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 arcmin. We have followed-up these sources with near-infrared imaging using the wide-field imager HAWK-I on the VLT. K_s-band emitting regions, about 1.5 arcsec in size and coincident with the centers of the radio structures, were detected in all the sources, with magnitudes in the range 17-20 mag. We have used spectral modelling to characterize the sample sources. In general, the radio properties are similar to those observed in 3CRR sources but the optical-radio slopes are consistent with moderate to high redshift (z<4) gigahertz-peaked spectrum sources. Our results suggest that these unusual objects are galaxies whose black hole has been recently re-ignited but retain large-scale radio structures, signatures of previous AGN activity.

This series of papers explores the evolution of late-type galaxies in the rich cluster Abell 85. Here, we revisit the complex dynamical state of A 85 by using independent methods. We analyze the redshift distribution towards the cluster out to 40,000 km/s, and determine the mean redshifts of the background clusters A 87 and A 89. We then search for substructures in A 85 by considering the 2-D galaxy distribution for its members and by applying the kinematical 3-D Delta-test to both projected positions and radial velocities. This clearly reveals several substructures that we describe. We also analyse the distribution of the brightest blue galaxies across a major fraction of the cluster volume, considering if they are gas-rich or poor. We report a very asymmetric distribution of the blue member galaxies, and connect it with substructures revealed in the optical and X-rays. By matching our sample of bright blue member galaxies with HI detections reported in the literature, we identify gas-rich and gas-poor ones. HI-rich blue galaxies also turn out to be asymmetrically distributed, with most of them projected on the eastern side of the cluster. No blue objects have been detected in HI up to a projected radius of 2 Mpc in this zone. We estimate the ram pressure stripping exerted by the intra-cluster medium as a function of the projected distance from A 85, and quantify how important this mechanism may be in sweeping the gas out of the infalling spirals.

We present a detailed study of the cluster CL 0048-2942, located at z~0.64, based on a photometric and spectroscopic catalogue of 54 galaxies in a 5 x 5 square arcmin region centred in that cluster. Of these, 23 galaxies were found to belong to the cluster. Based on this sample, the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the cluster is approximately 680 +- 140 km/s. We have performed stellar population synthesis in the cluster members as well as in the field galaxies of the sample and found that there are population gradients in the cluster with central galaxies hosting mainly intermediate/old populations whereas galaxies in the cluster outskirts show clearly an increase of younger populations, meaning that star formation is predominantly taking place in the outer regions of the cluster. In a general way, field galaxies seem to host less evolved stellar populations than cluster members. In fact, in terms of ages, young supergiant stars dominate the spectra of field galaxies whereas cluster galaxies display a dominant number of old and intermediate age stars. Following the work of other authors (e.g. Dressler et al. 1999) we have estimated the percentage of K+A galaxies in our sample and found around 13% in the cluster and 10% in the field. These values were estimated through means of a new method, based on stellar population synthesis results, that takes into account all possible absorption features in the spectrum and thus makes optimal use of the data.

When adopting the standard error definition, two clusters have a low blue fraction for their redshifts, whereas the fraction of the third one is compatible with the expected value. A detailed analysis of previous BO-like studies that adopted different definitions of the blue fraction shows that the modified definitions are affected by contaminating signals: colour segregation in clusters affects blue fractions derived in fixed metric apertures, differential evolution of early and late type spirals potentially affects blue fractions derived with a non standard choice of the colour cut, the younger age of the Universe at high redshift affects blue fractions computed with a colour cut taken relatively to a fixed non evolving colour. Adopting these definitions we find largely varying blue fractions. This thorough analysis of the drawbacks of the different possible definitions of the blue fraction should allow future studies to perform measures in the same scale. Finally, if one adopts a more refined error analysis to deal with BO and our data, a constant blue fraction with redshift cannot be excluded, showing that the BO effect is still far from being detected beyond doubt.

We present a new algorithm to search for distant clusters of galaxies on catalogues deriving from imaging data, as those of the ESO Imaging Survey. Our algorithm is a matched filter one, similar to that adopted by Postman et al. (1996), aiming at identifying cluster candidates by using positional and photometric data simultaneously. The main novelty of our approach is that spatial and luminosity filter are run separately on the catalogue and no assumption is made on the typical size nor on the typical M* for clusters, as these parameters intervene in our algorithm as typical angular scale (sigma) and typical apparent magnitude m*. Moreover we estimate the background locally for each candidate, allowing us to overcome the hazards of inhomogeneous datasets. As a consequence our algorithm has a lower contamination rate - without loss of completeness - in comparison to other techniques, as tested through extensive simulations. We provide catalogues of galaxy cluster candidates as the result of applying our algorithm to the I-band data of the EIS-wide patches A and B.

These two catalogues will be combined with a redshift catalogue of 466 galaxies (Durret et al. 1999) to investigate the cluster properties at optical wavelengths (Durret et al. in preparation), as a complement to previous X-ray studies by a member of our group (Pislar 1998).

A total of 274 galaxies have velocities in the 7800-11800 km/s interval, and will be considered as members of the cluster. This discrepancy has generally been explained by subtle surface brightness effects acting on the observational samples. In this paper, we explicitly implement the computation of surface brightness in a simple semi-analytic model (with standard CDM), and we estimate the effect of observational surface brightness thresholds on the predicted luminosity functions. The crucial free parameter in this computation is the efficiency epsilon of supernova feedback which is responsible for the triggering of galactic winds. With the classical formalism for this process, it is difficult to reproduce simultaneously the Tully-Fisher relation and the flat slope of the observational luminosity function with the same value of epsilon. This suggests that the triggering of galactic winds is a complex phenomenon. [...] The conclusion of this heuristic paper is that a more realistic description of SN feedback is needed, and that surface brightness effects should not be neglected in the modelling of galaxy formation.

Using our two extensive photometric and spectroscopic catalogues (with 4232 and 551 galaxies respectively), we discuss here three topics derived from optical data. First, we present the properties of emission line versus non-emission line galaxies, showing that their spatial distributions somewhat differ; emission line galaxies tend to be more concentrated in the south region where groups appear to be falling onto the main cluster, in agreement with the hypothesis (presented in our previous paper) that this infall may create a shock which can heat the X-ray emitting gas and also enhance star formation in galaxies. Then, we analyze the luminosity function in the R band, which shows the presence of a dip similar to that observed in other clusters at comparable absolute magnitudes; this result is interpreted as due to comparable distributions of spirals, ellipticals and dwarfs in these various clusters. Finally, we present the dynamical analysis of the cluster using parametric and non-parametric methods and compare the dynamical mass profiles obtained from the X-ray and optical data.

As a continuation of our study of the faint galaxy luminosity function in the Coma cluster of galaxies, we report here on the first spectroscopic observations of very faint galaxies (R $\le$ 21.5) in the direction of the core of this cluster. Out of these 34 galaxies, only one may have a redshift consistent with Coma, all others are background objects. The predicted number of Coma galaxies is 6.7 $\pm$ 6.0, according to Bernstein et al. (1995, B95). If we add the 17 galaxies observed by Secker (1997), we end up with 5 galaxies belonging to Coma, while the expected number is 16.0 $\pm$ 11.0 according to B95. Notice that these two independent surveys lead to the same results. Although the observations and predicted values agree within the error, such results raise into question the validity of statistical subtraction of background objects commonly used to derive cluster luminosity functions (e.g. B95). More spectroscopic observations in this cluster and others are therefore urgently needed. As a by-product, we report on the discovery of a physical structure at a redshift z$\simeq$0.5.

We present a catalogue of velocities for 551 galaxies (and give the coordinates of 39 stars misclassified as galaxies in our photometric plate catalogue) in a region covering about 100'$\times$100' (0.94$\times$0.94 Mpc for an average redshift of 0.0555, assuming H$_\circ$=50 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$) in the direction of the rich cluster Abell 85. We have assembled a large data-set of 613 galaxy redshifts in the Coma cluster, the largest presently available for a cluster of galaxies. We have defined a sample of cluster members complete to b$_{26.5}=20.0$, using a membership criterion based on the galaxy velocity, when available, or on the galaxy magnitude and colour, otherwise. Such a data set allows us to define nearly complete samples within a region of 1~\Mpc\ radius, with a sufficient number of galaxies per sample to make statistical analyses possible. Using this sample and the {\em ROSAT} PSPC X--ray image of the cluster, we have re-analyzed the structure and kinematics of Coma, by applying the wavelet and adaptive kernel techniques. A striking coincidence of features is found in the distributions of galaxies and hot intracluster gas. The two central dominant galaxies, NGC4874 and NGC4889, are surrounded by two galaxy groups, mostly populated with galaxies brighter than b$_{26.5}=17$ and well separated in velocity space. On the contrary, the fainter galaxies tend to form a single smooth structure with a central peak coinciding in position with a secondary peak detected in X--rays, and located between the two dominant galaxies; we suggest to identify this structure with the main body of the Coma cluster. A continuous velocity gradient is found in the central distribution of these faint galaxies, a probable signature of tidal interactions rather than rotation. There is evidence for a bound population of bright galaxies around other brightest cluster members. Altogether, the Coma cluster structure seems to be better traced by the faint galaxy population, the bright galaxies being located in subclusters. We discuss this evidence in terms of an ongoing accretion of groups onto the cluster.

Recent observations of the Coma cluster of galaxies in its central region have provided approximately 250 new redshifts - allowing a good membership criterion to be established for brighter galaxies - and magnitudes for 8000 objects in the same region derived from photometric data complete up to V$_{26.5}$=22.5. A thorough structural study of the galaxy distribution of the cluster galaxies, jointly with an X-ray wavelet analysis, and with a kinematical analysis of the velocity distribution allows us to uncover a primary body of the cluster, with evidence for a velocity gradient.

We have obtained new redshifts for 265 objects in the central 48~$\times$~25~arcmin$^2$ region of the Coma cluster. When supplemented with literature data, our redshift sample is 95~\% complete up to a magnitude b$_{26.5}$=18.0 (the magnitudes are taken from the photometric sample of Godwin et al. 1983). Using redshift-confirmed membership for 205 galaxies, and the location in the colour-magnitude diagram for another 91 galaxies, we have built a sample of cluster members which is complete up to b$_{26.5}$=20.0. We show that the Coma cluster luminosity function cannot be adequately fitted by a single Schechter (1976) function, because of a dip in the magnitude distribution at b$_{26.5}$$\sim$17. The superposition of an Erlang (or a Gauss) and a Schechter function provides a significantly better fit. We compare the luminosity function of Coma to those of other clusters, and of the field. Luminosity functions for rich clusters look similar, with a maximum at $M_{b} \simeq -19.5 + 5 \times \log h_{50}$, while the Virgo and the field luminosity functions show a nearly monotonic behaviour. These differences may be produced by physical processes related to the environment which affect the luminosities of a certain class of cluster galaxies.
