Introduced about 1815 and popular until superseded by cars
- Two wheels
- One horse (occasionally two in tandem)
- Passengers: driver and one passenger
- Body on a locker (for luggage or parcels) sometimes replaced by a drop-seat-box
- Seat: panelled, spindled or caned
- No top
- Suspension: body is mounted on two cross-springs shackled to two side-springs mounted on the axle
- Similar vehicles: Tilbury differs in suspension
- Variants: Stanhope Buggy, Stanhope Phaeton both used the same body
