At the beginning of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Descent, Part I", Data (Brent Spiner) is spending some free time on the holodeck. He has arranged a poker game with three of the greatest minds the scientific community has ever known. Sir Isaac Newton (John Neville) is arrogant and impatient. Albert Einstein (Jim Norton) is affable, but an aggravating poker player, as he struggles with basic arithmetic. And, sitting across from Data, making science jokes and poking fun at Newton and Einstein, is Stephen Hawking, playing himself.
Hawking gets the opening line of the episode, completing an anecdote: "But then I said, in that frame of reference, the perihelion of Mercury would have precessed in the opposite direction." Einstein laughs, and Data declares the story to be very amusing. Data tries to explain the joke to Newton, who would not have known about the relativistic curvature of space-time.

It’s part of TV comedy history that Joe Rogan replaced an actor named Greg Lee in the sitcom NewsRadio, making Rogan a household name and setting the stage for Fear Factor and eventual world domination. It would be easy to point an angry finger at Lee, who actually starred in the NewsRadio pilot, for not holding onto the job that would give Rogan a fame foothold. But there was a third comic actor who was cast before Lee. And if Ray Romano could have done a better job of impressing producers, we’d live in a very different timeline.
Yep, it was the future Everybody Loves Raymond star who was first cast as the electrician on NewsRadio. Romano auditioned and got the part in 1994 — only to get fired two days into rehearsals.
What was the problem? Producers felt like Romano’s sleepy line delivery was slowing down the show’s rapid-fire comic pace.

Deadpool has been somewhat of an event in and of itself in the past decade. When the Ryan Reynolds-helmed IP took off in 2016, a new leaf was turned over in Hollywood’s book of records, ensuring the dawn of a new era of cinema that was as maddeningly liberating as it was riotous fun.
For the first time in history, a movie star in the recesses of his career was given the power and the money to actively mock and call out multi-billion dollar industries, studio houses, and megacorporations on purpose.
In return, Ryan Reynolds wielded that power responsibly, slowly bringing together the Marvel fandom together from the sidelines, amassing an army of fans and supporters, and in Kevin Feige’s most dire time of need, answering the call to arms by rising to his ultimate destiny as Marvel Jesus.

I thought Kelsey Cook was joking in her online bio when she said her parents are an international yo-yo champion and a member of the Foosball Hall of Fame. But she does indeed come from minor sports royalty, even scoring with a series of videos where she hustles unsuspecting Vegas bros in foosball.

She turned those stories and other life experiences into The Hustler, a stand-up special on YouTube that has more than three million views and counting. This Friday, the special moves to Hulu to find an even wider audience. I recently spoke to Cook about the zen of comedy, foosball and dating other comics.

Ryan Reynolds is probably one of the few actors out there with zero haters. From his onscreen characters to his banter with his wife Blake Lively, there is absolutely nothing we don’t love about him. His performance as Deadpool, though, will always hold a special place in our hearts. All in all, Ryan Reynolds clearly deserves all the appreciation he gets.

However, his former Deadpool co-star T.J. Miller does not seem to be a fan. The controversial actor has previously expressed his resentment toward Ryan Reynolds but the harsh feelings seemed to have ended when the latter reached out to the former. But recently, T.J. Miller has made some comments about the popular actor yet again that did not sit right with the fans.

There is no talk show guest experience like going on Adult Swim's "The Eric Andre Show." Andre, a surrealist prankster comedian whose antics regularly offend, does his best to terrify and torture his guests on the talk show from Hell. There have been some memorable interviewees who managed to get on the same weird, Dadaist level as Andre, like rapper Tyler, the Creator and skateboarder Tony Hawk, but no one expected "The Wire" star Lance Reddick to sit down in the stuffy warehouse and put up with the show's bizarre gauntlet. His appearance on the 2013 episode of the late-night series was pretty unexpected in and of itself, but his actions in the episode are even more surprising. Reddick not only punches Andre's desk and storms off, he then comes back dressed in rags with chains, a visor, and a Starfleet communicator badge on his bare chest. The actor always commits completely to a role,...

"I don't know how I can help." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for a crime thriller titled Among the Beasts, the latest from actor / filmmaker Matthew Newton. Now set to open both in theaters and on VOD coming up in February. When a gangster's daughter reluctantly teams with a former Marine to find her kidnapped cousin, the combat veteran must overcome his own demons in order to rescue the child. There's not much more to the plot than that, yet another of these junk films being dumped on VOD every week. This indie thriller stars Tory Kittles, Libe Barer, Sarunas J. Jackson, Kate Easton, Jeremy Holm, Mark Mitton, with Jon Bass, and Jim Norton. Unfortunately this looks instantly forgettable and entirely uninteresting, not even worth watching the trailer either. Save yourself the trouble and just skip it. ›››

Rob Schneider claims Bill Murray “absolutely hated” the cast of Saturday Night Live when the latter hosted the NBC sketch comedy series.
Schneider, appearing on today’s episode of SiriusXM’s The Jim Norton & Sam Roberts Show, went so far as to say that Murray particularly disliked Adam Sandler and the late Chris Farley. The subject came up as the hosts were discussing rumors about Robert Shaw’s reportedly difficult demeanor on the set of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.
“That’s the same thing with Bill Murray,” Schneider interjected. “I won’t say who the filmmaker was, but ‘Bill Murray is gonna come, he’s gonna change the…dialogue. Tj Miller has claimed that Ryan Reynolds contacted him after he said he had a “weird” experience with the Deadpool actor during filming.
The former Silicon Valley star, who played Weasal in the first two Deadpool films, said in a recent podcast interview that Reynolds’s alleged on-set behaviour left him with no desire to work with the actor again.
“Would I work with him again? No, I would not work with him again,” Miller said during an appearance on the Adam Corolla Show podcast earlier this month. “But I’ve said that about Michael Bay, and now we’re friends, and I would work with him again. But I think Michael Bay is different.”
Miller explained: “We had a really weird moment on Deadpool where he said, ‘Let’s do one more take.’ And then as the character, he was horrifically mean to me as if I’m Weasel.

Simon Pegg earned the wrath of the Dark Side of the Force when he said that “Star Wars” fans are currently pop culture’s “most toxic” fanbase – and are far worse than what he sees from “Star Trek” fans, in particular.

“As someone who was kicked off about the prequels when they came out, the Star Wars fan base seems to be the most toxic at the moment. I’m probably being very controversial to say that,” the actor said.

Documentary
Channel 4-backed U.K. independent content production company Spirit Studios has teamed with James Watt, co-founder of multinational brewery BrewDog, to produce “Mission Finpossible,” a drama documentary aiming to to highlight the issues facing the world’s shark species. Humans kill over 120 million sharks a year, mainly for their fins for soup and many shark species are now under considerable risk of unrecoverable decline with some species having declined to near extinction in recent years. The granddaughter of Secretary of State James Addison Baker III, she was barely seven years old when her parents stood her on a chair so she could charm the assembled VIPs, including the then-president, George H.W. Bush, with a cute-as-a-button oration.

Sean Hannity has responded to John Oliver’s charge that the Fox News host has been exaggerating the violence of Portland’s Black Lives Matter protests: Don’t be so serious.
“His big problem is he’s not funny,” Hannity says in a SiriusXM interview.
On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver riffed on the Trump Administration’s handling of the Portland protests following the police killing of George Floyd. Oliver said that Hannity overstated the protests’ violence and that Hannity’s “tone does not reflect conditions on the ground.”
He added, “If you, like Trump, think that it is fun to use federal troops as a prop to crush the constitutional right to assemble then like a great American, I’d like to offer you a basic cognitive test.” He then held up two middle fingers, “How many fingers am I holding up?”

Exploring the relationships between comedians and the women that made them funny, Call Your Mother is a fun and sincere ode to the creative process. Directed by Jesus Camp and Detropia filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, the documentary follows various stand-up comedy legends including a few like Kristen Schaal, David Spade, Roy Wood Jr., and Bridgett Everett who are fortunate enough to still have their mothers around even if they get the occasional scalding for a sketchy joke that goes over the line. One stand out who steals the show is Fortune Feimster, a lifelong tomboy whose childhood in North Carolina included being raised on Hooters. She spins hilarious stories of life in the South as her mother proudly watches on.

Exclusive: Truly Tasteless Jokes, a series of slim paperbacks that became a publishing juggernaut in the 1980s, is the subject of a new documentary feature just acquired by Virgil Films.
Tasteless, directed by Jeff Cerulli and Matt Ritter, traces the history of not only the books themselves but the way the material — much of it crude and controversial — has aged over the decades. The author of the books, Ashton Applewhite (who used the pen name Blanche Knott), later became a feminist and activist. She conceived of the original volume while making $8,500 a year as an entry-level employee in book publishing.
