Exclusive: Actress Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) has signed with Untitled Entertainment for management, with partner Evan Hainey to run point on her behalf.
“Funny enough Evan helped start my career well over a decade ago and we have remained good friends ever since,” Graham told Deadline. “I have consistently turned to him for guidance over the years as I navigated my journey in this industry, and he has never steered me wrong. This is a natural alignment. I am very grateful to join forces with a great man and solid friend like him.”
Graham broke out with her series regular role as witch Bonnie Bennett across all eight seasons of The CW’s supernatural teen drama The Vampire Diaries, which aired between 2009 and 2017. Developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, the show based on L.J. Smith’s books had her starring alongside Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, and more.

Zoe Lister-Jones was proud to attend Sunday’s Spirit Awards, and the reason is twofold. First, the multihyphenate talent turned up in Santa Monica to support a pair of nominations for Roku’s Slip, the original series she created, starred in and executive produced alongside a team that includes Dakota Johnson. Reason No. 2: She did so by walking into the event hand-in-hand with a new love in her life.
When the subject of her plus-one came up during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old Lister-Jones responded with a big reveal: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.” Lister-Jones is in a new relationship with a fellow filmmaker, Sammi Cohen, who most recently directed Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, the teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and family including wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny.

Cailee Spaeny’s star-making turn as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla comes as no surprise to anyone who’s followed her young career so far. The Springfield, Missouri native has consistently stolen scenes since her feature film debut in 2018’s Pacific Rim Uprising, and she’s only followed suit through a wide variety of roles in Bad Times at the El Royale, How It Ends and Mare of Easttown. Spaeny’s quick climb is all the more impressive when you consider that she originally moved to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a teenage pop star.
Prior to Priscilla, perhaps her most acclaimed role was as Lyndon on Devs, Alex Garland’s sci-fi gem of a miniseries that FX on Hulu aired in March 2020. Garland was enamored with Spaeny and the rest of his cast to such a degree that he voiced his desire to reunite someday soon,...

Pauly Shore has launched a grassroots campaign to become the leading man of a not-yet-in-development Richard Simmons film, asking fans to reach out to the major Hollywood studios to help “make it happen.”
Shore, the “Encino Man” and “Bio-Dome” star whose last acting credit came with the 2021 comedy “How It Ends,” said his efforts were sparked by a groundswell of fan interest. He even predicted it would all result in an Oscar.
“I’ve noticed all the reactions to me playing Richard Simmons in a new biopic,” Shore wrote in a post to Facebook. “So I reached out to him. I heard he’s living deep in Big Bear.
“We’ve been playing phone tag,” Shore added. “I’m trying to make it happen for you guys. Be optimistic.”

The series followup to the Guy Ritchie film “The Gentlemen” has been ordered to series at Netflix, with Theo James joining in a lead role.
In the film, Matthew McConaughey played Mickey Pearson, an American living in England who oversees a vast marijuana business hidden on the estates of cash-strapped members of the British aristocracy.
Variety has learned from sources that James will star in the one-hour drama series as Eddie, who inherits his father’s estate only to discover it is part of Pearson’s empire.
Ritchie directed, wrote the screenplay for, and produced the film and will serve as writer, director, and executive producer on the series. Matthew Read will executive produce via Moonage Pictures and co-wrote the pilot with Ritchie. Bill Block, Ivan Atkinson, and Marn Davies — all of whom produced the film with Atkinson and Davies writing the story with Ritchie — will serve as executive producers on the show.

Amazon Studios has unveiled the first stills from its holiday romantic comedy Something from Tiffany’s, starring Zoey Deutch (Not Okay) and Kendrick Sampson (Insecure), which is poised to launch globally on Prime Video on December 9th.
The Amazon Original, based on Melissa Hill’s novel of the same name, watches as a woman’s life is upended, when an engagement ring meant for someone else leads her to the person she’s meant to be with.
Nothing compares to the magic and excitement of the holidays in New York City, where the streets blaze with lights, windows dazzle, and a special box from Tiffany could change the course of a person’s life. Or several lives. Rachel and Gary (Deutch and Ray Nicholson) are happy enough, but not quite ready for that big commitment. Ethan and Vanessa (Sampson and Shay Mitchell), the perfect picture, are just about to make it official.

Bam! Pow! Crack! That’s the sound of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/5.99) holding back the ascension of “The Batman” (Warner Bros./24.99) on two out of three PVOD charts.
“The Batman” debuted a week ago, but “Spider-Man” held on to the #1 spot at both iTunes and GooglePlay, with “The Batman” second at both. Those sites rank by number of transactions, irrespective of revenue. At Vudu, which calculates by money, not individual sales, “The Batman” ranks #1 for the week, with “Spider-Man” #3..
The well-timed price drop looks like a strategic play on Sony’s part. Price reduction is a normal part of VOD play, but it’s unusual when a film is still thriving as PVOD. Whatever the motive, the result prevents Warner Bros. from claiming a clear victory.
Even so: Spider-Man and Batman represent apples and oranges. Sony’s “Spider-Man” has no streaming outlet while “The Batman” also debuted last Monday on HBO Max.

While the world, at least parts of it privileged enough to have easy vaccine access, is just starting to peel itself away from lockdown and reflect on the loneliness of the past year, artists have been trying to make sense of it all for months now. The virtual Sundance Film Festival back in January 2021 was already surprisingly stacked with Covid-themed movies, with “How It Ends” making headlines for being shot entirely during quarantine, while Radu Jude’s “Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn” won Berlin. Now a different festival gives us another taste of this pandemic-centric exploration in film form, this one hailing from Paris.
Shot in one miraculous unbroken take, the adventurous and hypnotic “Roaring 20’s” by Elisabeth Vogler (a pseudonym for the filmmaker who prefers they/them as pronouns) is about today, and not the prosperous and glittery Jazz Age that followed a different pandemic a century ago.

The same morning that Amazon announced its proposed merger with MGM, it dropped another press release: “Amazon Studios will exclusively release The Tomorrow War globally on Prime Video July 2nd, 2021.” Assume the timing was coincidental, but it reinforces the deal’s key message: Theaters are of secondary concern.
There are exceptions: Eon Prods., which shares ownership of the James Bond franchise and has contractual say on key elements including distribution, quickly reasserted that “No Time to Die,” opening worldwide between September 30 and October 8 this fall, will see its planned theatrical release (through United Artists domestically and Universal elsewhere).
Beyond that, MGM is expected to be an Amazon label, much as its acquisitions of Twitch and Audible. It’s unclear just how much theatrical exhibition we can expect — or if there would be need to maintain both the Amazon Studios and MGM staffs to do it.

“The evolution of art is in constant flux,” says Ethan Hawke. “I don’t know what the future will bring.”
Hawke, one of this year’s Vision Award recipients at the 10th iteration of the Sun Valley Film Festival, has been championing independent cinema since he first emerged on the big screen as a teenager in such films as “Explorers” and the Oscar-winning “Dead Poets Society.” By the time he starred as intellectual slacker extraordinaire Troy Dyer in Ben Stiller’s now-cult classic “Reality Bites,” Hawke was the pop cultural embodiment of Generation X and the epitome of 1990s 20-something, post-collegiate ennui.
A four-time Oscar nominee — most recently for his 2014 turn in Richard Linklater’s experimental drama “Boyhood” — Hawke’s debut small-screen project, the Showtime pre-Civil War miniseries “The Good Lord Bird,” comes to the Sun Valley fest as not only a rousing example of American historical fiction, but Hawke’s unwavering commitment to high-quality,...

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for the SXSW Film Festival once again, but here we are. For the 2021 iteration of the fest, SXSW is going virtual, which gives more people the opportunity to get to experience their brilliant lineup of films this year. As someone who is already well into my SXSW viewings for this year, I can confidently say that this might be SXSW’s best slate of Midnighters from top to bottom, and a few other genre and genre-adjacent films that are premiering in other sections are very much worth your time as well.
So, if you’re looking to check out some excellent horror and sci-fi cinema during this year’s SXSW from the comfort of your own home, here are 15 different projects you’ll definitely want to make time for. Oh, and because I included both How it Ends and Violation during my Sundance 2021 preview,...

The coronavirus pandemic and its attendant lockdowns and quarantines have already inspired a wide variety of scrappy slices of entertainment, from “Songbird” and “Malcom & Marie” to “Locked Down” and “How It Ends,” and that’s just in the narrative arena. While the desire to keep creating as usual production options are on hold is understandable, it’s led to a mixed bag of final products, even the best of them hampered by the restrictions of the era. In short, a year into this thing, “Zoom fatigue” is very real, and getting an audience excited to watch a film that plays out almost entirely via video conferencing and messaging is no small ask.
Fortunately, Natalie Morales’ winning “Language Lessons” offers one of the best uses of the format yet, Morales also stars in the film alongside her co-writer, Mark Duplass, who first conceived of the film’s relatively simple idea before...

Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones’ Sundance film “How It Ends” was shot during the pandemic and shows the grim realities of what life has been like for Angelenos living through lockdown. Making the film during such a trying time was not only a creative release but, Lister-Jones says, was also an effective form of therapy.
“Like everyone, we were facing so many fears and uncertainty at the beginning of quarantine and I think for both of us, we kind of don’t know how to channel our emotions through anything other than our work,” Lister-Jones told Steve Pond during TheWrap’s Sundance Virtual Studio presented by Nfp and National Geographic. “Our work serves as therapy, and this was no exception. So I think we started to do a lot of inner child work and were trying to have these dialogues with our most vulnerable selves.”
She added: “We didn’t...

Movies about the end of the world share a similar DNA: chaos, fire, looting, revelations. But in “How It Ends,” from filmmakers Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein, the apocalypse is as serene and lush as a Southern California spa day.
Though spilling over with catharsis and a full manifestation of the lead character’s inner child, the co-directors, writers and producers have a different take on cinema’s ongoing obsession with the last day on earth — and it looks and feels a lot like coronavirus quarantine, during which it was made.
“Daryl and I, like so many people, had so many questions. Specifically about the future of filmmaking. As artists and as a team, filmmaking is really how we process a lot of deep existential questions. We were faced with both of those things, because of the singular circumstance that we were all forced into, and we didn’t have a way to process them,...

In How It Ends, there’s a lot of talk about seeing somebody “in the next life.” The movie, created together by partners Zoe Lister-Jones and Darryl Wein, was written and shot during the pandemic, and it’s not hard to sense that the repetitive line is a stand-in for “when this is all over.” During the long walk through Los Angeles neighborhoods that makes up this little apocalyptic comedy, the quiet emptiness of streets and sidewalks and the pitch-perfect weather provide an eerie backdrop for the waiting game of disaster. It’s the end of the world—a meteor is hurtling towards earth and expected by nightfall—but everyone feels a little too fine.
Is that optimism for the uncertain future or a nihilistic complacency with the present? For Liza (Lister-Jones), a tech developer who recently sold an app, it initially seems to be the latter. On the last day of earth,...

For some, Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein’s “How It Ends” may trigger a bit of Ptsd back to the early months of the coronavirus pandemic when stay-at-home orders were in effect. The film was shot in June of 2020. That meant characters were almost universally six feet apart. Almost every scene is outside. There are no cars in the streets. And, notably, no one hugs or touches one another. It might be hard to experience now, but in many ways, it’s a necessary snapshot of that time.
