Images from webchantier.com

[edit]

22 15 images are affected

No proof of http://www.webchantier.com/ having released their images to the Public Domain or under a free license. The website seems to just be a collection of vector images that are sent to them by users. Please note that in some cases images could be reverted to pre-webchantier revisions rather then deleted (as done for Flag of the Cayman Islands.svg). For others the component from Webchantier can be replaced with a component from a free source. / Lokal_Profil 14:09, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have yet to add templates to image pages and user talk pages, will be done later today. /Lokal_Profil 14:09, 27 June 2008 (UTC)✓ Done[reply]
I tried to contact webchantier for one of these images a week or two ago. At least at the time their email link was broken. So generally I'd agree, we don't know what licences these are under. Some derivative images might also be affected (this is or was the case for the Image:Coat of arms of Monaco.svg image.--Caranorn (talk) 10:59, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was able to revert the Saudi flag to e version before this website got involved. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 15:55, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've changed the Saudi image page so that it referes to Open Clip Art rather then webchantier as per your revert. I think a lot of the images can be saved in similar ways, it is however usefull to have a definite say on the webchantier images to refer to in the future and to avoid revert wars between file versions. /Lokal_Profil 23:47, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, none of these should be *deleted*, as that would disrupt a lot of projects, but much rather should be replaced with non-controversial versions. —Nightstallion (?) 15:38, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some of them don't have non-controversial versions however since they are based straigit of the webchantier image without alternatives being readily available. /Lokal_Profil 17:48, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You should know, LP, that you will be held responsible for drawing replacements for all of these images should they end up deleted. -- Denelson83 (talk) 07:19, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because you uploaded images against the Commons guidelines? Not sure I see the logic. /Lokal_Profil 16:51, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Surely as webchantier.com has a link for download beside each flag that a free licence is implied?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.213.7.136 (talk • contribs) 03:24, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed the once for which I had found free alternatives. As for the rest... /Lokal_Profil 00:07, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Image:Coat of arms of Haiti.svg could be universally replaced by the free (raster) Image:Haiti-wappen.png and a raster version of Image:Flag of Haiti.svg could probably be created using the same arms. /Lokal_Profil 00:35, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • What's up with this? A reproduction of an image which is in the public domain already (like many flags are) cannot be copyrighted. Also, http://www.webchantier.com/ doesn't own the copyright to those designs just because they have reproduced them. We would have to look at the copyright status of the individual flags, but not in relation to that website, but to their age. Images deleted as a result of this request should be restored, and the nominator should read up on derivative works. FunkMonk (talk) 15:16, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Please compare this case with images from Flags of the World {{FOTW}}. BTW a reproduction of a PD work CAN be copyrighted if there is a sufficient amount of creativity added. /Lokal_Profil 17:30, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • But in this case there is nothing creative added which didn't exist already. If the other case was similar to this one, the conclusion was wrong. Where can I comment? FunkMonk (talk) 18:32, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • How can you say that there has been no creativity involved after having looked at the images. E.g. many are based on different interpretations of Coat of arms. E.g.For the Monaco case Image:Flag of Monaco (state).svg, [1], [2] are all different interpretations (hence have their own creative worth) of the en:blazon of the coat of arms. For the (probably copyrighted) version which Monaco themselves use see [3]. Note that they all depict the same idea but have interpreted it differently. Just like many people may photograph a statue but end up with different (copyrightable) images. /Lokal_Profil 14:54, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
          • Then the specific images where creative liberties have been taken should be reviewed on an individual basis, to make sure how different they are from the insignia they are based on, and if the insignia itself is still copyrighted. But that they're from a specific website isn't rationale enough in itself for deleting them. And I don't think the differences you've pointed out are even enough to make them legally considered copyrighted works, but someone with more knowledge on the issue would be able to decide that. From what I can see, the Monaco SVG is just a simplification of the original, nothing more. You should maybe ask for a comment on this whole case on the Village pump.Commons:Village pump FunkMonk (talk) 14:58, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted where they come from webchantier.com. Others reverted, where possible, to previous versions. No clarity on what licence, if any, the original webchantier.com image was released under. The fact that the blazon is old does not make a specific representation PD. (Sorry about the deltion of many heavily-used images. Please don't moan to me about the deletion of unfree content: go and find a free version or draw one yourself from the blazon). MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:51, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
