The ref goes to a book but it's not easy to determine if this reference supports the claim. What respected scientists? The hollow earth ideas of Symmes and Reynolds were well regarded as crackpot ideas. Mindme (talk) 11:40, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
Reynolds unmistakably being who Poe refers to
editCurrently, in the J N Reynolds article, "Influence" section, exists the following paragraph:
{Tynan's assumption, however, that the "Mr. Reynolds" Poe praised (actually not in January 1837 in the SLM but only in September 1843 in Graham's Magazine, Vol. XXIV No. 3) as "the prime mover of this important undertaking", the United States Exploring Expedition, can be identified with J. N. Reynolds seems [according to whom?] more than doubtful.}
It is in Chapter XVI of Arthur Gordon Pym - published in 1838 -, before quoting his words, that Pow writes the following: "Mr. J. N. Reynolds, whose great exertions and perseverance have at lenght succeeded in getting set on foot a national expedition (...)." And then he proceeds to quote - as one must, word for word - a segment from J. N. Reynolds "Address on the Subject of a Surveying and Exploring Expedition to the Pacific Ocean and South Seas" (pages 92-93 of the Harvard document, https://curiosity.lib.harvard.edu/expeditions-and-discoveries/catalog/38-990053371760203941).
That J. N. Reynolds must the Reynolds Poe speaks about accepts no doubt from anyone with access to the two texts, which is why the paragraph I have singled out should be removed from the Wikipedia article. Digreatdestroyer (talk) 13:24, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
