New template

[edit]

I created this template as a summary of key aspects of the topic. There's obviously more that can be added but (excepting the country section where I believe there's potential for more articles) I opted to restrict it to those pages already mentioned on the various pages associated with this topic. As for the martyrs section, again, space constraints prevented me from listing every last martyr. That topic would be best served in a separate template. Changes

[edit]

It has been suggested here that this template should be split to account for specificity of topic. For example, it was commented by History2007 that sometimes one Christian sect persecutes another, a fact not demonstrated in this template which, by focusing on Christians in general, cannot account for such events. It was also commented by No such user that this template is in danger of becoming too bulky, leading to a suggestion of splitting by era as well as sect.

For myself, I'm not quite sure how the template could best be split. There's the potential for a lot of crossover, even in simple cases such as {{Persecutors of Christians}}.

All I can suggest is to keep {{Persecution of Christians}} and also create {{Persecution of Catholics}}, {{Persecution of Mormons}} etc to account for inter-sect persecution and other persecution clearly targeted at a particular sect. Incidentally, regarding sect-oriented templates, I think it likely that some people might confuse acts of persecution with inter-sect fighting so that will need to be monitored.

As for splitting by era, I suggest {{Persecution of Early Christians}} for persecutions prior to the Nicaean Creed. Those occurring afterwards can be covered in the various sect-oriented templates (e.g. {{Persecution of Arians}}.

The only other templates I can suggest are {{Christian victims of persecution}}, {{Persecutors of Christian}} and possibly {{Persecution of Christians - sorted by country}}. Of course, these, too, can be split by sect. Hopefully, others have ideas on how to proceed. LordVetinari 11:50, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Overbroad and overinclusive

[edit]

Further to the above section, this template needs either trimming or re-naming (though I expect adding something like "Allegations of..." would be both contentious and often inaccurate). The Marcus Aurelius and Benito Juarez articles don't list anything that can be even liberally interpreted as "persecution;" yet they're in the same template with French Revolution, Nero, and Enver Hoxha. Barring feedback on this talk page, I will remove Aurelius and Juarez from this template. ☯.ZenSwashbuckler.☠ 17:27, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

[edit]

I've begun pinning the list of persecutors to actual articles discussing persecution. Where I can't find any such article, I've removed the name. Far from finished, but out of time for now. Will resume later on. ☯.ZenSwashbuckler.☠ 15:33, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
