Jimeloyo Ji

[edit]

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I am delighted to discover that you are a College old boy - given your knowledge of fagging, I suspected as much. I don't find the mention of fagging to be offensive at all - as you say, it is a special - and rather unique - aspect of College life. The ISBN code for Jimeloyo-Ji is not included in the book itself, but I can easily post a copy to you, as we have some extra copies lying around. Let me know. I have lots of stuff on Skonk - can I suggest that I fax through photo copies? If so, what is your fax number? My scanner is out of action at the moment. Cheers, Matthew

Maritzburg College

[edit]

Hi Ssteedman, thanks for your comments about Maritzburg College. I am the archivist at the school - as well as being a past pupil, current master, President of the Old Boys' Association etc. Alas, as you can see, I am not the most objective person when it comes to the place.

My claims about the sporting prowess of the school are based on discussions that I have had with friends from other schools, and my reading of numrrous sports-related articles etc over the years. I can certainly confirm that we have produced 180 internationals - their names are inscribed in our clubhouse - which, I gather, is slightly more than KES, and still a fair bit more than schools like Grey College, Grey High and Jeppe. In about 1994 the book "Historic Schools of SA" was brought out (I have a copy at home), and, at the time, we were ahead of the pack, with about 120 internationals.

The figures regarding the no. of sports teams churned out on Saturday afternoons come from my personal knowledge.

I note that you have deleted my claim that the school may possibly be the strongest sporting school in the country. My claim was based on (1) the findings of the website www.dreammerchants.com, which rates SA schools at rugby, cricket and hockey, and had Maritzburg College at no 1 in 2004 and no 2 in 2005, and (2) our no. of international caps.

I note that you state that my initial attempt gave the entry the feeling of a "promotional pamphlet or prospectus" - I cannot doubt that I am biased, so I guess I have to accept that you are right! However, I must point out that I did not insert such claims as College is the "strongest sporting school in the province" (despite the fact that I happen to agree with this assertion), and I do try and mix a bit of fact with my bias.

BTW, I would be interested to know where the stuff on fagging came from. Was it you? It is an interesting insertion, because it really is a non-issue here at the school. Even in its present format, the article reads as if Maritzburg College has a hint of Dachau about it, which is far from the truth. Of the many things that I might be inclined to write about, fagging would not be one of them. But it adds a certain sense of a bygone age to the place, which I anyway like.

In any event, thank you for your comments - I have greatly enjoyed reading your work. Matthew Marwick, KZN (AKA Jimeloyo Ji)

Sorry if it seems that my edits are POV. Please note however that Wikipedia is based on GNU Free Documentation Licence, which means that the articles are not copyrighted in the usual sense of that word; thus, instead of deleting articles or large portions of them and asking for a complete rewrite, one could edit them somewhat, delete the exact words which one feels are POV rather than entire portion of text. As probably no one is able to be completely neutral on every subject, the only way to achieve neutrality is for two or more prople representing different opinions to be slightly editing the article in turns until the article more or less is acceptable to all sides. Rainbow Nation

[edit]

thanks a lot for a great article. i am more into norwegian stuff, but the reason for my concern was that i was looking for the term in a school project, and the obvious biased writings made me react. positive for me is that it also got me into wikipedia in the first plase

DEAR SSTEEDMAN i'm writing up a lecture on queer recognition in SA and was pleased to see the way in which the rainbow flag was included. may i ask if you were the author and if you inserterd this part of the text later on, which was not clear to me originally. if yes, do you know of other similar interpretations that i can trace?

it would be a great help.

thanks

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Tata Indica.JPG. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hi there. I've taken the liberty of uploading your Image:Mopane Worm.jpg to Wikimedia [Commons], so everyone can find it. Your VandalProof Application

[edit]

Dear Ssteedman,

Thank you for applying for VandalProof! (VP). As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact with the new 1.2 version release it has even more power. As such we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. The reason for this is that for security reasons, VandalProof's creator requires it's users to have made 250 edits to articles, which you have not. Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again in the not too distant future. Thank you for your interest in VandalProof.

Prodego talk 15:37, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your editing, and keep up the good work! However, as a security measure, users with under 250 article edits are not approved, and although you almost have 250 total edits you currently have 143 article edits. Please re-request approval when you reach 250 article edits. Until then, happy editing!. Prodego talk 11:11, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Source for honeyguides and ratels

[edit]

Hi. I notice you added a citeneeded tag to a paragraph I wrote at Ratel:

Some sources say that a bird, the honeyguide, has a habit of leading ratels and other large mammals to bees' nests. When a ratel breaks into the nest, the birds take their share too. Other sources say that honeyguides are only known to guide humans; see Greater Honeyguide.

I meant that the reference to the Greater Honeyguide article would be the source. If you look there, you'll see correctly sourced (I hope!) quotations on both sides of the controversy. Do you feel that these should be repeated at Ratel?

By the way, is the pronunciation with "a" as in "father" the only one in S. A.? American and British dictionaries prefer it but give "a" as in "fate" as a variant, so maybe that should be listed too. —JerryFriedman 23:22, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image source problem with Image:Brightwater Commons Logo.gif

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:Brightwater Commons Logo.gif. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 21:48, 13 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Thanks for uploading Image:947 COLOUR1.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Original_Waterfront_At_Night.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast (talk) 14:54, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article Sam Cowen has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Seems to fail WP:BIO / WP:CREATIVE / WP:AUTHOR.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Novaseminary (talk) 22:49, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Non-Free rationale for File:Leighpic.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Leighpic.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under Non-Free content criteria but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a Non-Free rationale.

If you have uploaded other Non-Free media, consider checking that you have specified the Non-Free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on The Spear (painting) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. →Στc. 07:17, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:Truth to Power.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Truth to Power.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. File source problem with File:ThaboBester.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:ThaboBester.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
