Description

Manhae Han Yongun Simujang

This is the house where Manhae Han Yongun(1879-1944) lived from 1933 to 1944. Manhae Han Yongun, who wrote the poem ‘Sweetheart’s Silence’, was one of the 33 national representatives during the March First Independence Movement. If you enter the main gate facing east, you can see the tile-roofed house of Simujang facing north, an annex used to manage this Western style house, and a Chinese juniper tree which is said to have been planted by Manhae himself. Simujang is no larger than 5 kan. A daecheong (wiid-floored main hall) is located at the center, a hot-floored (ondol) room is on the left and the kitchen is on the right. The Chanmaru room, a place to make meals, is located behind the kitchen. A tablet written as Simujang is displayed in the ondol room, which was used as the study by Han Yongun. Simujang originates from a Buddhist tale in which the course to find and perceive a truth was compared to the job of finding a cow. The Seongbuk-dong area where Simujang is located was developed as a residential area in 1930s when Seoul was rapidly expanding. Unlike other houses of the time, Simujang shows a simple and plain composition. Han Yongun was a Buddhist priest who tried to reform Joseon’s Buddhism, and an independent activist who strived for the liberation of his country. He was also a poet who contributed greatly to modern Korean literature. Simujang is the place where Han Yongun spent his later years, and thus it is a historical site which shows some aspects of the great poet.
