Template talk:Location dec

This is not yet working right. I will work on it some more soon. The idea is to be able to use decimal coordinates (like you get from maps.google.com) instead of DMS, without having to do conversion. I wrote a version of this template that converts to DMS and invokes {{Location}} at User:Flamurai/location dec. Since this is a high use template I wanted to see if this is desirable before changing out.

Current template:

Camera location	44° 47′ 55.95″ N, 93° 27′ 23.9″ W	View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMap

My version called with exact same parameters:

Camera location	0° 00′ 00″ N, 0° 00′ 00″ E	View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMap

The major objection I can think of is loss of precision due to rounding, since location converts back to decimal. I've defaulted to rounding to 5 decimal places for seconds. I think this is sufficiently precise.

My initial reaction is enthusiasm, so in that spirit, can I act as devils advocate and make a few points.

• 4dp gives 7m accuracy- 3dp gives 70m (which is often all one can ascertain when geotagging existing images from other creators):seconds to 5dp gives a 0.2mm accuracy (canera shake!): isn't this overkill. Doesn't this imply a false sense of precision.
• Surely it is better to show both- in the same way we show velocity as furlongs per fortnight (ms^-1). This preserves dec for those of us who choose to use it, while giving the more universally accepted method.
• While doing a dec template couldn't a simple test be made to only add US specific mapservers, for locations less than long -50 and greater than +20, i.e the US (apologies to Canada).

• Changing the number of decimal places is trivial, so implementing whatever's desired is not a big deal.
• The other points are possible, but they'd required modifications to location. Right now all I'm doing is converting decimal to DMS and calling location... nothing else.

I have replaced the US-specific map sites with others that offer services outside the US. Having sites that offer services to one country is not useful for international projects. Nichalp (talk) 09:08, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This template and {{Location dec}} should have direct links only to Commons-related services, that is, services that can display geocoded data from Commons. Currently that's the WikiMiniAtlas, Google Maps and Google Earth. Other services can be found from the GeoHack list. Is there a problem with toolserver availability, or is it not clear that the coordinates link to a list of map services? --Para 13:59, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - kudos to the people who did this first, a very nice thing to have. But why are the four links at the right exactly those four, with Google Maps as the first? I don't think we should be linking anywhere else but services that can show Commons images. Other services can be found by clicking on the coordinates. Maybe if enough people are interested, WikiMapia can start showing Commons images too?[1] At the moment however, it's not a sister project and despite the "wiki" in the name, doesn't have much in common with Wikimedia projects. --Para (talk) 13:39, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it, but can not tell you what was the problem. All I have to do was to retype the coordinates. Possibly period or some digits had the same look but were encoded using some non-ASCII code. The existing documentation doesn't specify whether the 'heading' parameter should give directions based on true north or magnetic north. Which should be used? Can someone knowledgeable on this please update the documentation with the answer? Thanks, Emw (talk) 15:41, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Since this number is usually an estimate, in most cases it makes no difference whatsoever. The only case it would be significant would be in places close to both.
