Could you please explain...

You have been removing Category:2001-present war in Afghanistan from a very large number of images, without, so far as I can see, any explanation as to why you think this is a good idea.

Could you please stop, and explain why you are doing this, before you remove this category from any further images? Geo Swan (talk) 20:23, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

The particular picture that you were asking for doesn't show the Afghan war. It shows the war in Iraq. (Look at the description.) I've found another two or so which belong to Iraq and not to Afghanistan.
To talk about the other large number of images: I moved pictures with coalition forces on it to subcategories of Category:2001-present war in Afghanistan (like Category:United States Army in Afghanistan). I put some pictures of military operations to own subcategories like Category:Operation Anaconda
I think it makes sense to put the images into subcategories as specific as possible because we allready have a very large number of images about the 2001-present war and it gets difficult to overlook them, when they are alltogether in one category. When they are in the subcategories, I think we should remove them in the main Category:2001-present war in Afghanistan. Before I started recategorysing allready a large number of images where not in the main category; they were only listed in subcategories.
I suggest that we could put the best pictures into the gallery 2001-present_war_in_Afghanistan and keep the main category as empty as possible. What do you think?--Zaccarias (talk) 21:39, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
Okay. Geo Swan (talk) 19:41, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
In the long run I think the categorization of images so people can find the images they want, will prove more important then the initial upload. I can see from my watchlist that you have been working very hard at further categorizing the images from the Afghan war. And it looks like the subcategoategories you have created were well thought out. Since we are all volunteers we need to tell one another when we recognize someone else is doing a good job. Good job!
I'll consult your subcategories first, the next time I upload an image related to the Afghan war.
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 18:56, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Well, thank you. I've checked out the category trees of Category:Iraq War and Category:World War II and made somehow similar categories for the Afghan War. We allready have hundreds of photos showing the Afghan War, so I thought it would be helpful to have more specific categories. --Zaccarias (talk) 19:13, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Category discussion notification Category:United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan (Northern Alliance) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Greetings. Over on the wikipedia I suggested the corresponding article be renamed to w:Northern Alliance. And I am suggesting this cateogry be renamed. What do you think?

Mujahideen

I was going to come here to yell at you for "oh no, they're not Mujahideen, removing category!" edit summaries, but I see you actually improved the categorisation by sorting them by era - so I've gone from complaining, to thanking. Great work :) Sherurcij (talk) 23:54, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. I have named the category "Militia men" because they are not necessarly mujahideen. During the Sowjet War they were called mujahideen because they fought against the atheist, communist government. --Zaccarias (talk) 21:36, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

I continue to place my trust in the categories you are creating around the Afghan war. And I want to repeat what I said the other day -- I think uploading is just the first step, and good categorization, as you have been providing, is an even more important step.

I tried to fit in Category:Military hospitals in Afghanistan into the structure you created. I trust your judgment to move it or collapse it, as you see fit. Same with Category:Rronnie.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 16:01, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! You are absolutely correct. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 18:17, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
You don't have to thank me. I didn't really plan to work on the categories of the Afghan War. I just worked on Afghanistan in general and then I also did work on the categories of the war.
About the Category:Rronnie: I am not sure that this dog is relevant enough to have it's own category. If it would be so, one could make categories for any military dog. So we would have ... Rronnie, Sabi, Ben, Grek, and many more. I don't think that an animal should have it's own category (and it's own article) unless it had widespread media attention, like Category:Marine K9 Lex or Category:Knut_(polar_bear). The criterias for article relevance in the German Wikipedia give the same.
I worked a bit on Category:Military working dogs. The images about Rronnie are also listed in these categories. I also seperated the images from Afghanistan from those of Iraq. I do not want to do more categorising, because I am not that interested in this topic. I am still not sure about "Rronnie". If the dog had widespread media coverage, I would keep the category. If not, I would delete it. I'd be interested in your opinion. --Zaccarias (talk) 17:27, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
Sorry that my reply to your questions is so delayed.
I completely agree with your suggestion about the desirability of separating off Category:Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan. Did I start Category:Provincial Reconstruction Teams? If so I must be getting forgetful in my old age.
WRT Category:Rronnie... can I comment on categories, and the other tools we have for organizing images and other material? I think we haven't (yet) figured out the powerful tools that we need to first organize and then find images when we need them, without being given a lot of false positives.
I read a comment, a couple of weeks a month or so ago, by someone who said that the wikimedia commons had terrible tools for organizing images compared with some social networking sites. It both surprised me and annoyed me, even though, at the back of my mind, I knew I our tools were primitive, and, frankly, I have little experience with other image sites, with the exception of flickr.
Over on the English wikipedia I don't think I became aware of categories at first. The first discussion I participated in was an acrimonious one I watched from the sidelines, that consisted mainly of two opposing sides stating, back and forth, "Lists suck, categories rock", and "No. Categories rock, lists suck." (here I cut a couple of paragraphs of whining.) What they represented as if it were policy was merely their collective, unwritten conventions.
Sorry to be longwinded. So, your suggestion that Rronnie or Sabi shouldn't have a category, unless they had been the subject of substantial real world press coverage, or we had an article specifically about them -- it is certainly a suggestion with points worth consideration. But, is the situation the same here and now the same as it was back on the English wikipedia -- participants relying on unwritten collective agreements and not policies or guidelines?
I've been following other people's examples. I've uploaded about one hundred maps I created. About half of them are "Orthographic projections" -- images of one whole hemisphere of the Earth, as if one was hovering, in high orbit, over a particular spot on Earth. I put them all in Category:Orthographic projections. Someone else created: Category:Orthographic projections over cities and Category:Orthographic projections over islands.
FWIW Sabi was the subject of widespread press coverage.

Censoring Images

Please STOP censoring the images from American military personal. WikiCommons ruled on July 19, 2010 that all images taken by military personal are in the public domain, REGARDLESS of whether or not the camera they used was personal or military issue. -- Esemono (talk) 09:48, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
