Delhi excise case: Arvind Kejriwal sent to judicial custody till July 12

New Delhi: A local court here remanded Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to judicial custody after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) refused to seek his further custodial interrogation.

Kejriwal was arrested by CBI earlier this week in connection with its ongoing probe into the Delhi Excise scandal. He was remanded to three days of custodial interrogation by the CBI.

The CBI urged the court to remand Kejriwal to 14 days of judicial custody. The counsel for CBI argued that Kejriwal is an influential politician who could tamper with evidence and influence witnesses if he is not remanded to judicial custody.

In its application, the CBI argued that although Kejriwal has been evasive and not truthful in answering the agency's questions, his further custodial interrogation is not required for the present.

Kejriwal's counsel urged the Court to examine if there was any material to remand Kejriwal at all to judicial custody. He further urged the Court to direct the CBI to place on record the material the agency has unearthed against Kejriwal which could justify his arrest.

Asking Kejriwal to file a bail plea instead, the Court verbally said that the material collected by the CBI cannot be disclosed to the accused.
