NEW DELHI: Wednesday morning the world woke up to the news of WhatsApp outage. The messaging app was down for a few hours across the world, and thousands of users reporting glitches in the popular end-to-end encrypted application.

According to Down Detector, which monitors and offers real-time status and outage information, users started reporting problems since 1:32 AM. Most users (72 per cent) reported issues of connection, sending or receiving messages as well as log-in problems.

Many of the over 1.5 billion users, both on Android and iOS, were unable to log into the app. The reason behind the snag is yet to be announced by the company. Few users even took to Twitter to share the messages appearing on their favourite app.

Meme lords got to work to create the most unique jokes around the downtime, and #whatsappdown & #WhatsApp soon began to trend on the micro-blogging site.

People woke up to the news, and were disappointed that they missed it.

Many people came to the micro-blogging site to confirm the news.

Some people called themselves 'Legends' for sleeping and not realising about the outage.

Many users were not sure why #WhatsApp was trending.

Downdetector.com had users from Sri Lanka, Peru, London, New Delhi, New York, Brazi, Netherlands, Germany, Egypt, Colmbia, Kazakhstan, Sweden, Romania, Trinidad & Tobago, Ireland etc reporting the outage.

However, a short while later the platform resumed functioning.

This is not the first time that the messaging app has stopped working. WhatsApp users faced a similar issue twice in January 2019.
