While he was in his final year of college, Stalin was involved in a protest against the Emergency, imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and was arrested in 1976. He wrote his final exams from jail
After forming the youth wing of DMK, he became its secretary in 1982
In 1989, he won the Assembly elections from the Thousand Lights constituency
After the dismissal of the DMK government in 1991, Stalin again won the Thousand Lights constituency seat in 1996
Stalin was elected as the mayor of Chennai in 1996
He was re-elected for a second term as the mayor of the city in 2001
He was appointed as the deputy general secretary of DMK in 2003
After the DMK formed the government in Tamil Nadu in 2006, Stalin was made the Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration
He took charge as the treasurer of DMK in 2008
In 2009, Stalin was appointed as the Deputy CM of Tamil Nadu
In 2013, his father M Karunanidhi named him his heir apparent, to take over the party after him
