- After the DMK formed the government in Tamil Nadu in 2006, Stalin was made the Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration

- In 2009, Stalin was appointed as the Deputy CM of Tamil Nadu
- In 2013, his father M Karunanidhi named him his heir apparent, to take over the party after him
