    MNP RULES

New Mobile Number Portability rules to come into effect from Monday. Here's what it means for you

New MP rules from July 1: TRAI enhances telecom security with new Mobile Number Portability rules starting July 1, 2024. The amendments introduce a seven-day waiting period for Unique Porting Codes (UPCs) to combat SIM swap fraud, ensuring only genuine requests are processed and safeguarding mobile numbers from misuse and theft.

Loan recovery agents calling you for no reason? Blame it on the mobile SIM you just bought

The rise of recycled mobile numbers poses challenges for new users, leading to unwanted calls and difficulties in linking numbers to bank accounts. Telecom firms release over 10 million recycled numbers monthly due to limited resources. Lack of coordination between departments results in new users facing inconvenience in updating KYC details with various authorities.

TRAI proposes tweaks in MNP rules to curb SIM-swap frauds

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed changes to the mobile number portability (MNP) rules to prevent SIM-swap fraud. Under the new regulations, telecom operators will need to check if a porting request is coming from a number that has undergone a SIM swap or replacement in the previous 10 days. If so, the unique porting code will not be allocated, preventing the port-out/in process.

Trai to run special audit on differential tariff order compliance

In September 2021, Trai had directed telcos to offer only those tariffs that had been reported to the regulator, and to ensure that these are compliant with extant regulations/directions. Its directive then was in response to numerous complaints lodged by all the three telcos–Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea--against each other for coming up with discriminatory MNP-specific offers to grab consumers.

Setback for Vi in MNP case as HC stays tribunal order

The HC order came on the back of an earlier ruling by Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), which in December stayed Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's orders that allowed mobile number portability (MNP) irrespective of tariff plans.

Trai bars telcos, partners from making differential tariff offers

All tariff offers must comply with Trai’s regulations and orders, especially where a telecom service provider’s name or brand is used for marketing or selling products and services, the regulator said.
