Developing Countries WikiContest

edit

Starting this July, we will see a new contest on the scene - the Developing Countries WikiContest (WP:DCWC)! Think of it as a WikiCup but only for articles and media on developing countries.

Competitors may submit GAs, GTs, FAs, FTs, FLs, FPs, and DYK and ITN entries from/on developing countries to gain points and proceed to further rounds. Points are also awarded to those who review GAs, FAs and FLs.

Nigeria is listed as a developing country for the purposes of this contest, so articles related to it are eligible to be submitted for points. I encourage everyone here to sign up and compete with editors from around the world to create high-quality content!

Append your name to the DCWC signup page today!

Best wishes, Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI (talk to me!/my edits) 11:05, 19 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Obe (Soups)

edit

This is an article created by a contributor who was indefinitely blocked shortly afterwards. The sources cited are all blogs, and wouldn't support the text if they were WP:RS. Furthermore, I can't find anything in English which actually supports the central claim of the article: that 'Obe' is a specific type of Yoruba cuisine, rather than a Yoruba word for soups and/or sauces. And while I can absolutely see the merits of an article on e.g. Yoruba cuisine if valid sources could be found describing specific attributes that distinguish it, this article clearly doesn't do that. Before I nominate it for deletion, does anyone from this project have any comments? AndyTheGrump (talk) 15:00, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@AndyTheGrump: I understand Yoruba language quite well, and Obe actually means soup in general. It is just like the Yoruba word for soup, while Obe ata means stew in general. Honestly, without looking at any sources, I am not convinced on the merit of such an article. it is just like the Spanish word for soup having a Wikipedia article. Sounds like something for the dictionary or the soup article in Yoruba Wikipedia. Wonder what any other person thinks? HandsomeBoy (talk) 21:21, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. That seems to confirm my earlier thoughts. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:37, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your work on Wikipedia. I'd add one or two vital articles before it closes. 2016 is a long time. HandsomeBoy (talk) 20:30, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

WP:WikiProject Oral tradition

edit

Would people be interested in joining a wikiproject on improving and creating articles about oral tradition? Wikipedia's coverage on this appears to be very poor Kowal2701 (talk) 19:09, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi. You should have provided links to know what it is about. My first time hearing about the term, and I am pretty sure I am not alone. HandsomeBoy (talk) 20:48, 26 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, on most of my other notifications I've linked to oral tradition. It'd be taskforce of WP:Anthropology, so far I've got around 12 definites plus 5 busy but interested Kowal2701 (talk) 20:52, 26 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Interesting. I know there was something done by the Wikimedia Nigeria (off-wiki community) regarding documenting oral culture in Nigeria, and there were many persons involved in the project. I wonder if some of them might be interested or link you to persons interested. This is a valuable topic area that have the potential to transcend English wiki to other wiki platforms. If you can send them an email to them or reachout to Kaizenify or Olaniyan Olushola, they might let you know persons that will be interested. Personally, I will be following the activities of the WikiProject if it comes to life, but not sure if I will be actively involved. That being said, other on-wiki members might be.
