Forced three touchdowns

[edit]

2011 Clemson Tigers football team#ACC Championship says "Clemson defense forced three touchdowns and kept the Hokies scoreless in the second half." What does it mean for the defense to "force" touchdowns? Does it mean they scored 3 touchdowns? Nope, it also says the quarterback scored 3 touchdowns, and 6 total touchdowns don't fit the box score (at most one touchdown in the first quarter, 3 in the 3rd, and 1 in the 4th, 5 total). Does it mean allowed 3 touchdowns? Nope, the opponents totaled 10 points. Did they set up 3 touchdowns by giving the offense good field position? That's a good guess, but I didn't find that in the reference, and anyway it's an unusual expression. Art LaPella (talk) 05:21, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
