Naming

[edit]

The common name "Bowsprit tortoise" is almost unknown in southern Africa (where the species occurs). Here, its English name is universally "Angulate tortoise". (see SANBI and Cape Nature websites for authoritative sources)

It also seems that the name "Angulate tortoise" is equally common in international organisations like IUCN. At the least, the two common names are given together equally.

In addition (unlike "bowsprit") "angulate" accords with its scientific species-name ("angulata")

Therefore, in light of these reasons, it might be wiser to rename this article "Angulate tortoise" for the more common usage. Abu Shawka (talk) 12:31, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that Angulate tortoise is the most common and therefore the one most suitable for this article title. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 12:08, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bowsprit tortoiseAngulate tortoise – Angulate tortoise is the most common name for this subject. The IUCN checklist use it as primary name. Fauna article titles would normally use most common name per WP:FNAME. This move is likely uncontroversial but as the topic was moved to it's scientific name before it seems best to open a move request. Regards, --Relisted.
