"Aruch HaShulchan is often quoted alongside the Mishnah Berurah, a work composed earlier..."

[edit]

Based on the publication dates for Mishnah Berurah given in the Yisrael Meir Kagan article and on the Aruch HaShulchan publication range given in this article, it seems that three volumes of Mishnah Berurah were still unpublished when Aruch HaShulchan was complete. —חנינא

`aruch/`aroch?

[edit]

According to the equivalent article in the Hebrew Wikipedia, it would seem that the the word ערוך in the Hebrew title is not the passive participle `aruch but in fact the imperative `aroch: "set the table!" and not "the table is set" (or "he whose table is set", if the two words are in smichut). A google search indicates that the name "`aruch hashulchan" is quite popular in English, but it still might be a mistake, caused by the ambiguous Hebrew spelling and analogy to the Rambam's treatise. I am not familiar with the text myself, and have no idea which is correct. The Hebrew version states the name is inspired by Isaiah 11:5, where there is definitely an imperative. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.172.42.138 (talk) 22:36, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Might be a mistake, you say? Well, considering the meticulous attention given by the entire Yeshivah world to matters of Hebrew grammar, as well as the intimate knowledge of Tana"ch (especially Na"ch) that is universal in those circles, how could you possibly suspect that?! :-) Toddcs (talk) 23:58, 11 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
