'Circa 1835, the area began to be settled by Europeans'

Can anyone substantiate this claim that people born in Europe settled there, rather than people born in what is now called Canada? If it means 'people of European ancestry', then that is what it should say. Calling someone born in North America 'European', means that we can call indigenous Americans 'Asians', right?
