Grammatical paragraph

[edit]

It would be great if someone knowledgeable about Dutch could add a paragraph about the apparent grammatical and logical errors in the text. --Thathánka Íyotake (talk) 17:48, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Translating these errors 'properly' is rather tricky, I think. English grammar is a lot more forgiving than Dutch, so the errors could be lost in translation. For example, the line "De dag die je wist dat zou komen is eindelijk hier" would literally translate as "The day that you knew would come is finally here". Not the most beautiful of English, but not all that bad either. In Dutch it's a linguist's nightmare, though. An English version of similar awfulness would be something like "The day which you knew that it comes has arrived". Second example: the song also contains the line "Ik hou je veilig" which just isn't proper Dutch. However, it translates as "I keep you safe". Nothing wrong with that. An English equivalent of "Ik hou je veilig" with the same amount of weirdness would probably be "I hold you safe". So yes, the lyrics are a disgrace. Adding these translations to the article would be difficult, though. You know, WP:OR and all that...  Yinta 16:51, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, you are right that merely translating the errors probably won't do the job. I imagine that making a paragraph about it in the article would include contrasting the sentences in question with proper Dutch and discussing the differences, providing knowledge about the relevant parts of Dutch grammar etc. So it's not quite easy but probably feasible.
The two examples you provided could be included. I imagine that some Dutch-language sources that have an opinion about it can be used, but unfortunately I don't know the language.--Thathánka Íyotake (talk) 20:28, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll see if I can find some proper sources.  Yinta 10:13, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
