Location of Emory

[edit]

This article states Buck attended Emory University in Athens, GA. That college is actually located in Atlanta, GA. I'm not sure if the fact that he attend this school is incorrect, or simply the location of it. If someone could verify that would be wonderful. --BrokenStoic 22:05, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I found two references for Peter Buck's college attendance. The interview with Bertis Downs (you have to scroll about halfway down the page to find it) states that Peter Buck was an undecided major at UGA when they met. Another point that needs a citable reference, I am fairly certain that most of the other members of the band no longer reside primarily in Athens, but I can't find a source for that. Also, Emory University is definitely in Atlanta (not Athens). There is a Wuxtry records near Emory as well as near UGA in Athens, and I think Peter Buck may have worked at the Emory location before working for the Athens location, but I can't find any reference for that either. --Roswell native 04:19, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wuxtry v. Chapter Three

[edit]

R.E.M.: Fiction and It Crawled From the South, two high profile R.E.M. bios, list Buck as working at Wuxtry, not Chapter Three. Chapter Three isn't even mentioned in South, and only in passing in Fiction as a place to buy imports. --badlydrawnjeff talk 21:40, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Intro - "the seminal 1980s alternative rock band R.E.M.."

[edit]

REM wasn't just a 1980s band. This could be improved but no sure how.

Actually it might be best if it just said "...the rock band R.E.M.". If anyone actually needs to know who R.E.M. are then they can follow the link, if not then any description is largely redundant. I think the main problem with the intro is that it describes Peter Buck purely as the guitarist for R.E.M. when he is more than that - OK that is certainly by far his biggest claim to fame but he's done session work and played with a lot of other people.
If editors really feel the need for adjectives and pronouns in the intro then maybe they should be applied to Peter Buck rather than R.E.M. There is definitely and argument for describing Buck's guitar style as influential or at least distinctive.

Pot of Yoghurt?!

[edit]

What exactly is a pot of yoghurt? I'm assuming that means a cup of yogurt, unless airlines ladle out spoonfuls of yogurt from large black cauldrons, which have a tendency to explode when touched. --M.Neko 08:26, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can't say I've ever had yoghurt in a cup. - Dudesleeper · Talk 09:33, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently it's an English expression. It means one of those single serving yogurt cups with the foil top. see http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=1729

I think the person who wrote it was English based on the "pot of yoghurt (with an h)" and the "whilst" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.63.82.37 (talk) 17:34, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've change the wording to something that is hopefully more universal ("container of yogurt"). I was imagining the same funny image as M.Neko. -MrFizyx (talk) 16:19, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If Buck was a British musician then "pot" would be OK. But he is American and to Americans "pot" would indicate at least one litre volume. I understand you brits want your way and you can have it with your own but Buck is ours and the word should be "cup".Martiniano (talk) 02:58, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, as I understand it Wikipedia is intended to be international and the articles are not "owned" by any particular nationality. If you really want to go down that route then someone will surely point out it was a British plane and a British court case. Secondly, if in doubt then it ought to come down to the cited sources - one of which makes no reference to the container and the other of which uses the term "tub". Circusandmagicfan (talk) 23:32, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WP:ENGVAR The national variety of English is not determined by the sources used in an article. There are several factors, but the two most germane are: style already in use and the scope of the article. Since Buck is an American and the style in use is already American, the article should be in American English. What we should not do is change styles mid-article when we start discussing an incident of British scope. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:58, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Personal record collection

[edit]

Peter Buck is noted for his impressive personal collection of records and CDs, as well as encyclopedic knowledge of rock music. Does anyone have any sources with a recent estimate of his record collection size? Stuart mcmillen 02:11, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In an interview with Wiese, a television music show in Norway, in March 1999 (not recent, I know, but it gives a basis) he said it was 25,000. - Dudesleeper · Talk 02:24, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Any relation to Rob Buck ?

[edit]

Anybody know if he's related to the late Rob Buck, of "10,000 Maniacs" fame? Looks like they were born on opposite sides of the country, but within a few years of each other...just curious...Engr105th 08:19, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, as stated in It Crawled From the South. - Dudesleeper · Talk 16:04, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't really think so. But you never know...thanx Dudesleeper..Engr105th 00:57, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Affiliation with Uncle Tupelo

[edit]

Should probably mention that he produced the album "March 16-20 1992" for Uncle Tupelo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.63.82.37 (talk) 17:30, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"The Buck-owned Crocodile Cafe"??!!! In which universe?

[edit]

The Crocodile Cafe is the project of Peter Buck's former spouse, Stephanie Dorgan. She was a disenchanted lawyer who adored music, apparently quit her day job, and opened the club in 1991 after purchasing the empty building. She married Buck 4 years later and they divorced earlier this year. She's not mentioned in the article by name (sour grapes?), even though she's also the mother of his twin girls. According to this article, Buck apparently gave birth to the children himself and "owns" the Crocodile cafe as well. In other words, it's misleading, inaccurate, and I shall change it if no one objects. strike71 (talk) 19:17, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The only thing this particular editor objects to is a paragraph of whinging prior to what constitutes a minor edit. - Dudesleeper · Talk 03:07, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Atheist

[edit]

Peter Buck own words.[1]85.244.53.93 (talk) 23:17, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That link leads to an error. Besides that, I've heard it mentioned that he's Atheist, but I've never read him say that in all the interviews I've read. It's the same with Stipe; especially with some of his lyrics somewhat hinting that he has some faith. --BuddyOfHolly (talk) 02:26, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've heard him say he's "not hugely religious", but making the jump to Atheism from that is not a small leap of faith. - Dudesleeper / Talk 11:22, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But to make an assumption that he is atheist... Well, I don't wanna make a big deal about it, but I'm not hugely relgious; I'm not atheist. --BuddyOfHolly (talk) 00:59, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Q Magazine Special R.E.M. 2001(?) page 120 Top 10 Peter Buck Quotes, Question Number 3, "On Religion "I am an Atheist, but I'd probably be Christian if I was black, because the gospel music is so exciting I would never have got through that." - moodymmo / Talk 11:57, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But see, that's not online, and that quote is loaded. He could mean anything: He's obviously joking around with the mention of being black. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BuddyOfHolly (talkcontribs) 23:30, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

HEY, is there anyone on Wikipedia who finds this conversation stimulating, helpful, or resourceful? If so, please speak up. Find the proper sources, add Peter Buck's religious beliefs on the page, and then let this thing die.--BuddyOfHolly (talk) 23:11, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopedic content

[edit]

It's a bit strange for an article that pretend to be "encyclopedic" to have a chapter about a yogurt incident but not a word about Peter Buck's gear ( amps, guitars...)

It looks more like something you would find in the sun than in the encyclopedia.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 20 century boy (talkcontribs) 19:01, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Many guitarists do not have a word said about their gear. REM Is On, which is now REM Accelerate, used to have a ton of old articles, including ones from Peter and old guitar magazines. I have lots of photos that show Peter's gear, but I'm not sure if that would be reference enough for Wiki. --BuddyOfHolly (talk) 16:44, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Music Section

[edit]

The whole top section of "Music" has a source about Peter's Ric which is unreliable for the information given. In '96 when Peter gave an interview to Guitar World, he said his Telecaster was stolen, not broken, and there was no mention of the price of the Ric. He also has never mentioned deciding between this and a Gretsch. I'm afraid these falsities will have to be removed. --BuddyOfHolly (talk) 05:51, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure But in the meantime, you deleted a source. If you want to cite the Guitar World interview, please do so (see Template:Citation), but please do not delete source information in the process. —Justin (koavf)TCM15:03, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The information is false! It should remain off unless a better source is given. A picture of a guitar does not say anything about how it was bought, when, or price. Nor does it say a Tele was smashed! You cannot make up stories on Wikipedia. --BuddyOfHolly (talk) 20:52, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"When Peter plays guitar, there's a strong sense of fuck off that comes from his side of the stage. And you feel that he wants to be in a band because he likes what they do... but that's all," explained U2's Bono in 2003.[5] "And it's almost like performing and having to deal with all of that is a bit of a compromise for him, so just fuck off. And I like that energy a little bit, and that gives them their aggression." I just fail to see how this quote stuck in the middle of the music section adds to this article. It looks out of place and detours from the paragraph.≠ Chryslerfan (talk) 21:20, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
