Background and release

[edit]

On February 22, 2012, Warner Music Greater China General Manager Chen Zaisan revealed on Sina Weibo that Jolin Tsai's new album was expected to be released in the summer of the same year, and that her new album was currently in the song collection stage.[1] On June 12 of the same year, the media revealed that Jolin had finished recording half of the songs for her new album.[2] On the 25th of the same month, the media revealed that Jolin Tsai's new album was expected to be released in August of the same year. Jolin Tsai's manager Wang Yongliang said, "She is very careful about this album and has spent the most time recording it, some songs have been chopped off again and again to rehearse, and she has added a lot of her own ideas to the music, music videos and photographs[3].” On July 10 of the same year, Jolin Tsai revealed that her new album would be released around her birthday on September 15 of the same year. On the 23rd of the same month,[4] the media revealed that Jolin had finished recording her new album.[5]

On August 15, 2013, Jolin released the single "The Great Artist" for her album "Muse",[6] and on January 2, 2013, the song was ranked No. 2 in the 2012 Hit FM Top 100 Singles of the Year in Taiwan.[7]

Creation and recording

[edit]

The song "The Great Artist" depicts a woman's point of view about a philandering male partner, warning women to live with courage and believe that one day they will find true love.[6] The song is different from Jolin Tsai's previous dance songs in that there are multiple emotional twists and turns, and the rap part is more difficult than ever.[6]

Jolin Tsai said, "'The Great Artist' is a special song, not only does it have a heavy beat, but it also covers some electronic styles, and its melody is something I've never tried before, which is more of a chant, but also has some of my own attitude, because Matthew Yen (嚴云農), the teacher who wrote the lyrics, wrote the lyrics a little bit tougher, and a girl needs to have her own thoughts. So when I sang this song, I put myself into the personality of a strong woman.[8]"

On August 22, 2012, Jolin Tsai released the music video for her song "The Great Artist", directed by Muh Chen (陳奕仁). The music video is set in the "Salon of the Future", and Muh Chen said, "In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Salon was a social occasion and cultural knowledge center for the French bourgeoisie and aristocracy to discuss literature and art. The hosts of Salon were all smart, witty, elegant and highly cultured female aristocrats. The background of the rise of feminism coincides with the lyrics of the song "The Great Artist"," said Chen. The music video was shot in Kaohsiung City and Taipei City, Taiwan over a period of 38 hours, and three designers created five sets of costumes for the music video at a total cost of NT$8 million.[9]

On the 23rd of the same month, Jolin Tsai held a promotional event for the music video in Taipei Circle, Taipei City, Taiwan.[10] The music video was ranked No. 9 on the 2012 Taiwan YouTube Hottest Video Views Chart and became the first music video by a female singer to receive a perfect score on YinYueTai.[11][12] The music video was shortlisted for the Best Music Video Award at the 24th Golden Melody Awards and the Best Visual Effects Award at the 2014 Berlin Music Video Awards. The music video was also awarded the Bronze Award for Visual Design at the 2013 International Design Awards, and the Visual Communication Design Award at the 2016 Golden Dot Design Awards in Taiwan.[13][14][15]
