WP:IMPERSONATOR

Hi, hope you're having a good start of December, because I haven't on Wikipedia for the following reason:-

An LTA had created an account named "Iggy the Swan II" which is obviously similar to my name but with the "II" at the end. The same LTA had also created accounts similar to usernames of users they harass including me. Is there a way to stop further attempts for people to create accounts similar to my username as a couple of accounts beginning with my exact user name were created within the last 90 days? Thanks, Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 17:01, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Iggy the Swan! I'm sorry to hear that someone is creating usernames similar to yours in order to troll and impersonate you. If you know me as well as I'm sure you do, you'll know that this happens to me all the time. :-) First, don't let that crap intimidate you or scare you away from Wikipedia. This is the internet, and trolls will be trolls... that's just how it is. They're trolls - they want an adverse reaction out of you, and being scared or threatened away will only give them exactly what they want, and at a very cheap "price". The second thing I'd recommend doing is to check out this page. It lists all of the other accounts that I've registered and taken over to have as doppelgänger accounts, which is allowed under Wikipedia's sock puppetry policy. Basically, you'll create accounts with usernames that are very similar to yours (check out the list of mine for ideas, and make sure that you're logged in so that the new user log states that you created the accounts), redirect their user and user talk pages to your main account, and call it good. If there are impersonator accounts that were created that are very similar to yours, list them for me and I'll rename them so that you can create the accounts and take their usernames. If you want to go further, just create a subpage in your user space like I did, and list your legit alternate accounts (if you have any), and state there that if any accounts that look like yours pop up in the new user log that were not created by you, that they can be blocked. Shoot, copy mine if you want to - I don't care. ;-) If you have any more questions or concerns, please let me know. I'll be more than happy to help you with anything that you need. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:21, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
That is a lot of accounts which starts off with the first few letters of your user name, more than I thought but some are listed on "this page".
In the case of accounts beginning with "Iggy the", I see eight of these accounts, three of which have been used to impersonate me with the rest being different as things stand. But the impersonator accounts have been taken care of already thankfully. The users who know my user name well would have realised something was not right with the edits made and were probably thinking that was certainly not me who did that. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 07:01, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, the LTAs and trolls like to target me like that. I don't know why... their efforts are a waste of time and don't affect me what-so-ever. Oh well... trolls will be trolls, and they'll keep doing what they think is working; there's nothing I can do about it, so I don't even care nor worry about it at all. Don't worry about impersonators making bad edits with similar usernames as yours. Any established editor will know to check the user page of the account and realize that it's not you. If they try to transclude or substitute your userpage onto theirs, I have a neat little trick to combat that. Just go into the Wikipedia sandbox, edit the page, then add {{User:Oshwah}} or {{subst:User:Oshwah}} to the page body, and click "Show preview". You'll see. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:30, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
Brilliant way to do that. I have seen you'd created "User:Iggy the Swan II" with the note of impersonating. Joseph2302 was also impersonated on the same day which I think you've noticed already per block log. By checking the edit filter, Iggy the Swan II tried to do something which a random filter disallowed the edit (here) but I can't prove what happened there for private reasons. Regarding me, if I ever forget my password I have an email address to recover it. I bet most others have an email address as well by seeing the listed tools. Cheers, Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 09:44, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

A question

Hey Oshwah, hope you and yours are all doing well. I have a question about the lead of an article like Persian Gulf. Should the lead contain the name "Persian Gulf" in both Persian and Arabic or "Persian Gulf" in Persian and "Arabian Gulf" in Arabic ? Thanks in advance, wish you a great rest of your day. Cheers.---Wikaviani (talk) (contribs) 09:48, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Wikaviani - Good question. Let me take a peek at the manual of style and guidelines and get back to you. If I recall correctly, like famous people who were born or originated in these areas, we supplement the person's native spelling of their name as what was recorded in that language if they're not using Arabic lettering. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:26, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for your answer. Yeah, for the famous people, it's easier, but the problem with the Persian Gulf is that Iran says "Persian Gulf" (which is the international name of that body of water) and Arab countries say "Arabian Gulf" While both Arabs and Iranians call, for example, Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi by his Arabic name. ---Wikaviani (talk) (contribs) 17:37, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
Hi,sorry for interruption, but I also want to mention that there is no unique Arabic name. some Arab countries use "Gulf" or "Persian Gulf". for example Wikipedia Egypt uses "Persian Gulf". 85.185.56.9 (talk) 21:52, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Glad to see you're back on the front lines! -- RoySmith (talk) 15:02, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi RoySmith! Thanks for the message! It meas a lot, and I appreciate it very much. I've been mostly working behind the scenes these last few months to combat LTA activity when I see events in progress. I'll definitely be slowly going back and forth and keeping an eye on SPI.
Fun fact: I had compiled everything and had my CU findings all laid out and typed into the edit window on the SPI report. I hit "Publish changes", close all of my CU tabs and notes, go back to the SPI report, and....... my edit isn't there. Hmm, okay, that's weird... I refreshed the page - nothing. Checked the edit history. Nothing! Checked my contributions thinking I saved it somewhere else on accident? Nothing!!! My global contributions?!! Am I going crazy? Zippo, ziltch, nada. The edit somehow didn't get saved and I had just closed all of my tabs and notes. I had to go back, list the users that I remembered being 'likely' and 'meh', re-run the users I didn't have in memory, and type my CU findings in again. I made sure to have it copied into notepad++ in case it didn't save again. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:23, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
BTDT, thought it was just creeping senility :-) -- RoySmith (talk) 15:27, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
RoySmith - You obviously know me well; I'm not an "angry or upset" kind of person, but that did frustrate me a little. Really?!! I spent two hours and my CU results didn't save?!! I need to start evil and become the best LTA ever!!!! ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:18, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
I hear you. Pretty much the first rule of good U/I design is "never lose the user's data". -- RoySmith (talk) 13:45, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

I was unable to edit this page in October due to your ECP. After unprotection, vandalism continued. I made the request at RFPP a few days ago but the request was rejected. I made another request again. Last time administrator rejected the protection request, by saying few edits since August, but that was due to your ECP.--Knight Skywalker (talk) 07:10, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

It looks Ujjwal 201 is upset with you. Just look at his/her user page per this. 2402:3A80:6E0:2848:49A1:2A62:94:90CE (talk) 14:36, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi there! Huh, interesting... It looks to be of a new user account and shortly after their creation. I wonder if I blocked their IP address or previous account, which is why they added that text to their user page. Thanks for letting me know - I'll definitely keep eyes on it. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:04, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Starcraft Marine

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starcraft_Marine

My last message had the offered valid advice: "The link should be left as an external link for those who know and understand the significance of the information. "

Unfortunately, you fail to see the value of a link that provides a tremendous amount of information regarding Starcraft boats. Boat owners, on the other hand, would find the information of great value, especially if they were looking at buying a very old used boat, trying to replace a deteriorated USCG vessel information placard, or simply had an interest in finding out more information about that line of watercraft. The information is not publicly available on the Starcraft website.

You clearly have not looked at the contents of the link - or if you had- did not comprehend its significance.

Boat owners, on the other hand, would have the appreciation of finding a link to information that, for one reason or another, seems difficult or impossible to find elsewhere - including on the publicly accessible section of the boat manufacturer's website..

It seems that you are quite intent on blocking the content - there isn't much more I can do about it unless Wikipedia has some sort of appeals process involving more informed individuals regarding such matters. Mohawk82 (talk) 22:09, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Mohawk82! Like I said before, I don't believe that the external link is appropriate for an encyclopedia per Wikipedia's content guidelines on external links. However, I'm not going to object if you add it back to the article. Please take some time to review the guideline page I linked you to. If, after reading through the policy page in its entirety, you feel that your changes are in compliance of the guideline - feel free to add it back. Advice?

Hello Oshwah! I'm sorry to bother you on your talk page yet again, but you've been helpful to me in the past and I think I need some advice... There's a user who has made several reverts on different pages and characterizing them as "vandalism," when they really appear to just be bold. He left me a message on my talk page after I re-reverted one of his edits (and corrected a portion of it,) and I have the interaction here [1]. I wanted to come to you because WP:NOTVAND has been brought to his attention in the past, [2] and I wanted to turn to an experienced user/admin for some help, just making sure I didn't say/type anything through the interaction in poor faith. The other user seems to have a COI as it relates to University of Louisiana at Lafayette, but notwithstanding, I just want to make sure he doesn't continue marking bold edits as vandalism, and when he left me the message on my talk page, I tried to help him out by understanding what is/isn't vandalism, but he seems to take it personally (I did insinuate that he was a WP:SPA, which I did apologize for as I shouldn't have mentioned that.) I would appreciate any help or guidance to make sure I'm not overstepping or not being civil with him otherwise, as that wasn't my intention whatsoever. Thank you again for your help!! Spf121188 (talk) 20:02, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Spf121188! Thanks for leaving me a message here regarding your concerns with Frank042316 and their reverts to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette article, and I apologize for the delay getting back to you. I agree that I personally wouldn't call this edit blatant vandalism, which Frank042316 stated in their edit summary when they reverted the edit shortly afterwards. I think you did a good job of expressing your concerns to the user regarding what is not vandalism and the assumption of good faith - which is especially important when it comes to edits by new or anonymous users. We definitely don't want them to feel bitten, and I'm happy to see that this is important to you. Though the user disagreed, I'd say that the best advice that I can give you is to leave the conversation as is, leave well enough alone, and move on. You made your point, and Frank042316 made theirs - there's not much else that needs to be done beyond that. If you have any more questions or concerns about this, please let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. :-) Thanks again for the message, and I hope you have a great weekend! Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:25, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
No need to apologize to me, I know how busy you are on a regular basis here, and I GREATLY appreciate the help you’ve provided me any time I ask for it. Thank you again and I look forward to talking more in the future. Have a great rest of your weekend!! Spf121188 (talk) 13:31, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
Spf121188 - You bet; always happy to lend a hand! ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:44, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
And if you don’t mind me boasting JUST a bit 😊 I created my first page a week or so ago, 2015 Shepherd Rams football team. I feel like I’m starting to hit a stride, and finding a niche on WP, but let me know your thoughts on the article so far (I know it can be better, but it’s a start!) again, thank you for all of your help so far, and especially for how welcoming you are, it’s not something I’ve seen often so I can’t thank you enough! Spf121188 (talk) 20:31, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
Spf121188 - Well done! That article looks great so far! Keep up the excellent work, and if you run into any questions or need my assistance with anything else, don't be a stranger. ;-) I'll be happy to lend a hand! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:41, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Interesting! I'm not sure if this is going to make any difference with the level of scrutiny that RFA candidates receive; I would trust that administrators should have a level of experience and knowledge when it comes to article and page creations that autopatrolled would be bundled. I guess only time will tell... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:34, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Sock tagging

Hey Oshwah. You changed my sock tag here. Given my noted at this most recent SPI, are you implying that the two SPIs should be merged as one master? Because I'm certain that Lopbunny is ItzJustLucky Alibino from the AlMichaels1727 SPI.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 20:49, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Ponyo! I hope your Monday is treating you well so far! Oh, interesting... Thanks for letting me know about that. I actually wasn't aware that I had done this. I was pretty certain with the technical evidence that I found that all of the accounts I confirmed or asserted as "likely" were sock puppets. I'd have to look into things a bit deeper in order to see if there might be a connection here... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:11, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

WOW!

You've been editing Wikipedia since before I was even born! Ex-stepp (talk) 23:10, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

Bless your heart, kid. @Oshwah, we, the aged, formally welcome you to our ranks. Acroterion (talk) 02:01, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
Acroterion - Honestly, it... really didn't hit me until just a few minutes when I read Ex-stepp's message (which I thank you for, by the way! Much appreciated! ;-))... Has it... really been 15 years? Jeez... where has the time gone? It seems like but only a few flashbacks in time when I was 15 years old, sitting at a computer in my High School library, and creating a Wikipedia account (the one I still use to this day) because I was bored and wanted to go and add vandalism to the article about our rival High School. I will definitely say, with 100% certainty, that when I created my Wikipedia account 15 years ago in order to be a troll, I absolutely 100% never ever imagined that, 15 years later, I'd be sitting here today, with the level of rights, trust, leadership, and involvement with the project that I have, and I'd be talking about it with other members of the community and as a funny story in my distant past. It just shows you how life can definitely surprise you when you look back and reflect... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:20, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
I suspect that the 15-year-old me would have behaved badly on WP. However, that would have been in 1974, so we had to make do with World Book for encyclopedia and a TI SR-50 was the closest approach to a computer we could find. Congratulations on your wiki-longevity! Acroterion (talk) 02:30, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
Acroterion - Oh, man... How times change so fast in just span of a decade or two... It's really quite fascinating if you stop and think about it. Thank you, Acroterion - I'm happy to be here. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:44, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

(As a total side note, what this has turned into was unexpected, but that's fine, lol) I can now envision 30-year old me as a person who is well-respected at Wikipedia (and who may even have become an admin by then, who knows?), and has become a well-known editor/helper, looking back on me (I used to edit on an IP address before like two days ago) when I was an idiotic IP user who thought Wikipedia was a joke, and didn't do anything great at all, and seeing how I changed in 15-20 years. Although it won't be the same as being an OG on Wikipedia from 2003 or something, it'll still feel good. I've looked at a lot of discussions from 10-15 years ago, and I'm fascinated by how different Wikipedia was back then. I kinda wish I was part of the OG group of Wikipedians, but oh well, I guess I was born at the wrong time, lol. But still, I hope I stay on Wikipedia for the next 15 years and I hope I'll see you in that time too, (although 15 years from now you guys will have been on Wikipedia for 30 years, which would be mind-blowing and head-splitting, so I don't know if this group of OGs will last much longer, not that I want you to leave Wikipedia, no no no.) so I guess we'll see how the next 15-20 years comes about. Now, I have spent like 20 minutes typing up this one message, lol, so I think I'll leave it at that. Ex-stepp (talk) 23:08, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

@The4lines: Long story incoming.
This guy was WaterflameIsAwesome, who pretty much revealed that they were a young editor. They were consistently disruptive unintentionally, spent most of their time on stuff like the Teahouse, and was eventually blocked for being NOTHERE. A good unblock request could have easily gotten them unblocked, but they decided to be uncooperative, ignore others advice, disrupt the process and eventually get TPA revoked.
They made this account, despite being able to appeal to UTRS. This one was pretty obvious.
Then we come back to the one mentioned above. Another admin picked up on it, but it wasn't as obvious as before. I suspect it's something to do with their idea of what an admin is. They were soon checkuser blocked. Given many chances to own up to it, but still didn't.
And here, the tragic tale ends. I hope they can come back someday.

Richtist

Hello, Oshwah,

You blocked this editor for sockpuppetry but didn't identify a sockpuppeteer. Now their page creations are tagged for speedy deletion but I can't delete them unless there is some ban evasion going on. I've asked checkusers about this before but is there a reason why the sockpuppeteer is not identified in the block notice? Because it's the difference between whether their page creations are deleted or not. Liz Read! Talk! 06:06, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Liz! Thanks for the message with your question here. I'm pretty sure that this is the work of Fuerdai/BMX or another LTA along those lines. The particular edits to look at by this user are the latest two that were made on Rod Stewart. From there, if you look at the edit history of Rod Stewart, you'll quickly see exactly what's been ongoing for a good part of a year now. They've been identified by their edits - which have been pretty the same exact thing, the modification of BLP articles to state that they are "sexual predators" and that they "prey on" either "innocent females" or "children". I blocked that account, but believed that this might've been a case of an account being compromised rather than created solely for LTA abuse. If you view this account's contributions, they seem to have made (what I originally and mistakenly believed to be) legitimate good faith edits before this started (which is a bit out of the ordinary compared to the previous LTA accounts of this user that I've blocked and have investigated in the past). However, when reviewing and investigating data from the technical evidence that I pulled, it led me to a bunch of more accounts that were either blocked for doing the same exact thing just recently, or had been created but were sitting as sleepers (one of which "woke up" and started adding more of the abuse to the article as I was actually going down the list to checkuser block them). Some of these other accounts that I found and updated the blocks to were originally blocked and tagged as being sock puppets of CalebHughes (SPI page). If you look through this sock master's SPI archives, their abuse was identified (and later confirmed) by their edits that repeatedly made false statements and articles relating to college sports rivalries. Now, take a look at Richtist's contributions and the articles this user edited right up before their last two - see the similarities? Edits to college sports rivalries... This where I hit that "AHA!" moment with my further investigation and digging. But what's weird is that this user went from one behavior the other. I found many more accounts and connections from this user that were making abusive edits in-line with both patterns. So, honestly, I don't truly know which prolific long-term abuse user that this all originally connects to. All I know is that I've seen, identified, blocked, investigated, and put a stop to this abuse on more than 70+ account that were making the exact same BLP violations over the course of the last year. I hope that helps... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:39, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

George Leon-Paul Weaver (1912–1995) is usually mentioned as "George L. P. Weaver" but sometimes as "George L-P. Weaver." So obviously I was wrong to create an article about him at George L.P. Weaver (no space between L and P.) But I can't decide if it should be moved to "George L. P." (usual) or "George L-P" (correct.) Can some experienced editor advise?

I discovered GL-PW via an article in Time Magazine (1955) about the National Press Club: " Negroes are admitted to the club's big banquet hall when it is rented out to other organizations, but only two have ever ventured into the members' private dining room or Press Club bar. One, William Hastie, now a federal judge, was refused service; the other, C.I.O. Aide George Weaver, was served luncheon, but his newsman host got an anonymous letter warning him never to bring a Negro again." Really, not that long ago. Amazing. HouseOfChange (talk) 05:20, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi HouseOfChange! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your question and your request for input and assistance with this. You have an interesting situation here. I did some digging and scraping from google and other search engines for this person, and many reliable sources state his name using different variations. Some called him "George L. P. Weaver", a few formatted it to be "George L-P Weaver" (which I find a bit unusual, but hey, sure...), while others just called him "George Weaver".
Typically, we title articles by using the most recognizable variation for the name of the subject. An example that I can point to is back when IHOP (jokingly) stated on social media that they're re-branding as "Ihob" (with the 'P' flipped upside-down). If you read through this discussion and go through some log pages, many editors wanted to immediately change the article title to match that of what was "announced". However, this didn't happen. People would associate this business as "IHOP", not "IHOb", so it was kept that way due to the policy on article titles.
I'm not sure if you've seen this disambiguation page or not, but I have a suggestion that might help you out: Why not just rename the article to be "George Weaver (activist)"? That seems to me like the best solution. Then, after renaming the article, you can add it to the list on the disambiguation page. What are your thoughts? What do you think is the best course of action? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:33, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
Thanks so much for looking into this so intelligently. While I was writing my message to you, another editor moved the page to George L. P. Weaver. I created a re-direct page there from George L-P. Weaver, in case anybody is searching with other spelling. The disambiguation page links there as well; thanks for suggesting it. Hope you are enjoying life, you deserve good things. Possible sock of LTA

Hi Oshwah. For the last few days, I have recieved bad news about a sock user who created multiple accounts, but to use it for vandalism both in the English Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. As I already checked, one user name Freddyfox19 (A well known user blocked in Commons for Sock of Remitbuber) has created un-useful articles like Zaira Nucci which was re-directed by fellow user. I also add User:JhilmarLora into the SPI as well because this user also edit minutes after this user in similar way and they are all presented at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Remitbuber. I say this because these users also behave badly in other Wikimedia projects too. So, if these 2 users are confirmed as sock, should I also reported them to Meta-Wiki as well so that these accounts be locked and you or any Admin can launch LTA for this user? Please look at Lindsay Foyle

Hi Oshwah (talk). I have submitted Lindsay Foyle for review. I am his daughter. I may have over-referenced this article, as Australian Cartooning is a bit cottage industry and Im not sure what would be considered a correct source. Im keen to receive your feedback. A snowflake!

MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:50, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

Sdkb - HA! That's funny, because I was "approved" to get a free shirt about five year ago, and I never heard a word from the WMF about it. So, assuming I (probably not, but we'll see) am approved for this one, I hope they send me that other one... ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:18, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
Hmm, interesting! I'm actually waiting on a WMF shirt myself (from the Growth team, not the merchandise giveaway program) offered this past October. I guess I can still call myself an unpaid editor until it arrives ;-) {{u|Sdkb}}talk 04:25, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
