  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.

Infobox junction list

[edit]

As documented at WP:USRD/STDS#Major intersections, we do not allow more than 10 junctions in the infobox. This is based on feedback from the WP:FAC process about 15 or so years ago and in keeping with the principles that the infobox should be a succinct summary. Imzadi 1979  15:31, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop adding an 11th junction to the infobox on Interstate 287. We're serious that this is a hard limit. Imzadi 1979  15:56, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The page Ngce has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appeared to have no meaningful content or history, and the text was unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do.

Please do not recreate the material without addressing these concerns, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello, Ethan369

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username The Night Watch, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I've proposed an article that you started, How To Play Top Trumps, for deletion because it meets one or more of our deletion criteria, and I don't think that it is suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia. The particular issue can be found in the notice that is now visible at the top of the article.

If you wish to contest the deletion:

  1. Edit the page
  2. Remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. Click the Publish changes button.

If you object to the article's deletion, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the issues raised in the deletion notice. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|The Night Watch}}. And remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. Thanks!

Hello there Ethan,
I have tagged your page for deletion because Wikipedia is not an instruction manual or guidebook, and this article appears to be an instructions on how to play the card game Top Trumps. Please keep in mind the policy regarding what Wikipedia is not when creating pages in the future. If you have any questions, please do ask me. Thank you, The Night Watch (talk) 21:18, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributed article, How To Play Top Trumps

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, How To Play Top Trumps. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Top Trumps. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Top Trumps. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. 2A01:4C8:A0:75C2:D883:E9C8:B89B:E2FE (talk) 21:21, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Weird Streets In New York

[edit]

Hello Ethan369,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Hughesdarren, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I have tagged an article that you started, Weird Streets In New York for deletion, because it appears to be about something that you or someone you know personally invented, coined, or discovered, and it does not indicate how or why the subject is important and/or recognized enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top. If the page is already deleted by the time you come across this message and you wish to retrieve the deleted material, please contact the deleting administrator.

For any further query, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Hughesdarren}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Please stop creating new articles or making major changes to articles like state highway. I think you're trying to run before you've learned to walk around here. You either need to slow down and learn the ways of things here, or you'll be asked at a some point to leave. Imzadi 1979  16:41, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

State highway issues

[edit]

Regarding this set of edits:

  1. We don't put a heading before the WP:LEAD of an article.
    1. Headings are supposed to be rendered in sentence case per MOS:HEAD, and they should also be concise.
  2. Canada does not have 11 provinces.
  3. The various states in the US use a number of different naming and abbreviation conventions, which are documented at WP:USSH. Some use a two-letter postal abbreviation, and many do not.
  4. New York's state route marker is a version of the shape of the shield on the state's coat of arms, not a "wave".
  5. California's state route marker is based on a miner's spade, referencing the gold rush in 1849.
  6. Utah's state route marker is a beehive shape. The beehive is an important symbol to the Mormon settlers of the state.

In short, you don't know what you're talking about. Adding content like this to articles is on the borderline of vandalism. Consider yourself warned not to do this in the future. Imzadi 1979  17:00, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page

[edit]

A talk page is there for others to communicate with you. You cannot tell them to not edit it. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 17:13, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I just don't want people to delete my edits or add mean comments. Ethan369 (talk) 18:40, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's a different matter, and you can simply revert them if their edits are against policy. Drmies (talk) 20:53, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So you are telling me that I can revert their edits? Ethan369 (talk) 21:24, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If their edits are against policy. You have control over your own talk page, to some extent--but telling people, as you did, that they are not allowed to edit your talk page, that's ridiculous and completely contrary to what we do here. And, for instance, you may have wanted me to put my response below that weird line you drew, but I'm not going to do that. Drmies (talk) 22:07, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(Ethan369 (talk) 21:28, 26 December 2022 (UTC))[reply]

You may want to take a look through Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. Getting fancy with extra headings, incorrect heading levels and such doesn't help things. We don't ordinarily use L1 headings in pages. These headings with just a single equal sign at each end are reserved for the page titles that are automatically generated by the server, and we would use L2 headings to start new talk page sections. Imzadi 1979  18:45, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding your addition at Talk:Interstate 82#New Section: Why is I-82 named that?, you shouldn't have signed your posting at the beginning. Signatures go at the end of the posting. Now the reply link is in the wrong place, and editors using it will reply to your hello statement and nd the rest of your posting. Imzadi 1979  18:47, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Regarding this edit, I've also noticed that you don't know how to properly wikilink things, and you only use external links. To properly wikilink a work, just enclose it in double square brackets, like [[Interstate 81]] to get Interstate 81. If you would like to alter thee displayed text, use a pipe character like: [[Interstate 81|I-81]] to get I-81. (Piping doesn't work on external links with single brackets; you must separate the content of the link from the displayed text with a space.) We also link the words already in a sentence instead of appending them in parentheses. Imzadi 1979  02:58, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contribution(s). I am glad to see that you are discussing a topic. However, as a general rule, while user talk pages permit a small degree of generalisation, other talk pages such as Red-eye flight are strictly for discussing improvements to their associated main pages, and many of them have special instructions on the top. They are not a general discussion forum about the article's topic or any other topic. If you have questions or ideas and are not sure where to post them, consider asking at the Teahouse. Thanks.
