Sounds True page

[edit]

Hello there, I'm not certain you were notified but the page you started for Sounds True was nominated by another editor for speedy deletion and I have recently reviewed and deleted it. It took me some time to make the decision because this is quite clearly a bona fide company and the article was in no way promotional. However the article made no assertions of notability, specifically nothing that I could see that met the criteria at WP:ORG. I did do a Google search to see if I could find any decent secondary sources but couldn't find anything that wasn't the company's own website or an obvious press release.

However, thinking that you might be able to find some sources yourself I have copied the text of the page to your userspace here. At least that way your work is not lost and is safe while you gather some sources. I felt it was the safest thing to do as I could not in all conscience decline the speedy but the article obviously might be sourcable. If you manage to find some sources and want to get a second opinion on a rewrite, I'd be happy to have a look. Kim Dent-Brown (Talk) 22:02, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Added template for SuggestBot

[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 19:54, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged revisions, underwent a two-month trial which ended on 15 August 2010. Its continued use is still being discussed by the community, you are free to participate in such discussions. Many articles still have pending changes protection applied, however, and the ability to review pending changes continues to be of use.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under level 1 pending changes and edits made by non-reviewers to level 2 pending changes protected articles (usually high traffic articles). Pending changes was applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't grant you status nor change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Acalamari 10:43, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Beherenowcvr.jpg

[edit]
⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Beherenowcvr.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. List of children's literature authors

I've reversed your change because literature includes poetry and people who wrote poetry for children belong on this list. Looking at Tanwir Phool's awards list, some or all of his poetry appears to be aimed at children. Bmcln1 (talk) 19:49, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of books about Oakland, California

[edit]

Hi Woodrose,

At the moment, there is no featured list of books by subject, so the closest thing we have to established precedent is authorial bibliographies like George Orwell bibliography. The relevant guideline is found here, although it does not make the solution for the current case immediately clear. In general, list entries do not have to be independently notable in order for their inclusion on a list to be justified. Nonetheless, if there are a significant number of notable books about Oakland, California and an additionally unmanageable number of non-notable books on the subject, only the notable books should be included. If, however, there is a very small number of notable books on the subject, non-notable books should be included as well. In that case, the inclusion criterion I would recommend is to only include those non-notable books that can be verified by reliable, secondary sources. While that criterion is not made explicit in the guideline, it is standard practice for articles like List of Tokyo Mew Mew characters where an unmanageable number of entries could be included that must rely entirely on primary sources. I hope you find this information useful! Let me know if I can help out in any other way.

Fair use of poetry

[edit]

Hello Mercurywoodrose. You deleted the short poem in the article on Adrien Stoutenburg on grounds of copyright violation. I believe you are incorrect about this. My understanding is that short poems may be quoted in their entirety for purposes of research and criticism; this is part of the fair use doctrine, and is commonly done in newspapers, magazines, and scholarly work. It is not possible to discuss a poet's work without being able to quote more than two lines of a poem, as you can well imagine. Similarly, when one quotes from prose sources, fair use normally encompasses quotations of several sentences, depending upon the details.

If there is a specific Wikipedia guideline that contradicts this, please give me the link, and I'll take this discussion there. Otherwise I'll restore the poem shortly. Cheers, Easchiff (talk) 11:59, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see you are active editing poetry articles, and are active here in general, so you are probably at least as versed in policy as i think i am. However, I believe that Wikipedia:Non-free content, section on acceptable use of nonfree text, states policy clearly: "Brief quotations of copyrighted text may be used to illustrate a point, establish context, or attribute a point of view or idea...Extensive quotation of copyrighted text is prohibited." I know the section i removed MIGHT apply here, but I think it doesnt. I think this means we cannot quote entire poems. But, i may be wrong, as my research doesnt give me a conclusive answer. I have checked on the status of quoted poems in articles on Philip Larkin, Pablo Neruda, Allen Ginsberg, T.S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath and the poems The Second Coming (poem), Howl and Other Poems, The Cantos, The Waste Land, Pomes Penyeach, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, Lady Lazarus, Tulips (poem), Ariel (poem). most dont have any quotes, the rest have partial quotes of whole poems, and Pablo Neruda's page has a quote of a complete poem, "curse" (i have inquired on that page about whether that is a copyright violation) . Fire and Ice (poem) doesnt say it in the article, but wikisource says its in the public domain, and thus can be quoted in its entirety. Philip larkin has multiple quotations of complete short poems, and again, i have inquired there as to whether that is acceptable. I think my edit was correct, but i see some ambiguity right now in interpretation, so i wont revert your good faith reversion of my edit, until we hear from someone else about this. i may post a specific question at a forum somewhere, but not yet. By the way, this extensive research i just did is mostly about my own process of education, and about the importance of not violating copyright, not about the relative importance of the inclusion of the poem. thanks for putting up with my obsession here.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:52, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This subject could use a good writeup somewhere as a Wikipedia guideline. Here is a link to a pretty good discussion from the Poetry Foundation. I haven't read it very carefully myself, but I think it indicates that fair use would apply to a quoting a poem of modest length as part of a Wikipedia article; see p. 11. Cheers, Easchiff (talk) 12:39, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to butt into your discussion, but I would just like to reiterate here what I said on the Philip Larkin talk page: none of our quotes on Philip Larkin are whole poems; the largest quote is a four-line stanza from a three-stanza poem. Yours, almost-instinct 16:53, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think that quotation of an entire poem is encompassed by "fair use" under some conditions. The advice to online poetry compilers in the document noted above is, "Under fair use, an online resource (such as a blog or web site) may make examples of selected published poetry electronically available to the public, provided that the site also includes substantial additional cultural resources, including but not limited to critique or commentary, that contextualize or otherwise add value to the selections," and also "Where a poet’s work is reasonably available for purchase in volume form, compilers should restrict themselves to the use of single or isolated poems only." I think this covers us pretty well.
I acknowledge that the Stoutenburg poem, "Cicada", that I quoted in her article is longer than normally quoted in Wikipedia, so it is a good test case. I wanted to give readers a fair glimpse of her talent, which a snippet does not do. My point is that editors should not hamper themselves unduly when there is no discernible harm to a writer's commercial interest. In Stoutenburg's case, her four poetry collections are no longer in print. And she missed receiving a Pulitzer by the thinnest of margins.
I'm not quite sure how to convert any of this into a Wikipedia guideline. One possibility would be to set an arbitrary threshold for the number of lines that can be quoted without giving a specific fair use rationale on an article's talk page. If this were our procedure, I'd suggest 14 lines; a sonnet should not be dismembered casually. For longer quotations, such as "Cicada", the procedure would be somewhat like the one that Wikipedia has established for fair use of copyrighted images. What do you think? Conscious hip hop

[edit]

In regards to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Conscious hip hop, where exactly should I merge Conscious hip hop? I don't see any good place in Hip hop, and making it a subsection of the Genres section would wrongly suggest this style is important in hiphop. There is List of hip hop genres but that's just a list, a section of content seems not quite appropriate. And please don't vote to merge without a specific idea of how to do it. D O N D E groovily Talk to me 04:25, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good observations, and it is a problem. If i were merging, i would place it at Hip hop music, instead of Hip hop, either in, or after the 2000 section, in a subsection called Conscious Hip Hop. I would be tempted to move the entire article content over, and see what the other editors thought of it. I see your point about not voting for merge unless i had a place, but i honestly thought there would, logically, be a sourced section on hip hop genres, which there isnt quite. actually, the subject of conscious hip sort of transcends genre, and is more about the politics and social statements in hip hop. a section on politically engaged/socially conscious hip hop would help the article, but thats a lot of work to create. maybe the editors at Hip hop music would have a better idea. I still stand by my merge vote, as it seems to me noteworthy and belongs somewhere. Thats similar to voting to keep an article without actually improving it. the vote to keep is about inherent notability, not about whether we do the work. Ive voted numerous times without doing the work to improve (ive also done lots of work to improve articles so that others can SEE the inherent notability, but stopped after the vote).Mercurywoodrose (talk) 05:04, 20 July 2011 (UTC) This was originally posted at User talk:Dondegroovily[reply]
Placing it in Hip hop music has the exact same problem as putting it in Hip hop. It seems like there needs to be a page like List of minor Hip hop genres to shove all this stuff in. D O N D E groovily Talk to me 04:36, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it doesnt fit neatly anywhere. I wish the list of hip hop genres was more than a list of names, then minor genres could be added there. OK, maybe the best suggestion i can make is adding a subsection on conscious hip hop to Hip Hop#Diversification, as that section touches on hip hops use in dealing with social issues.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:51, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How about this idea, Which may be better: merge with Political hip hop?Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:56, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hee hee, no problem ;O) It's just a matter of getting into the habit with the referencing lark, isn't it? I used to hate having to add them, but now there's a template/form type thing to fill out for them in the edit panel I find it quite fun. --bodnotbod (talk) 16:46, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
