A minor question from a fellow ACC member, why did you drop request 17427? It looked like an OK request to me. Cheers, Paxse (talk) 16:14, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's very clever, well caught. Now how did you work out it was fake? Paxse (talk) 16:52, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Very interesting, check this out [1]. Tom.com is a wireless provider and messenger service among other things. Even the administrator of the domain tomonline-inc.com uses a tom.com email address.[2] Tom.com also sell email accounts, so... ... perhaps we should reconsider the request. Did you ban the email (can't see it in the logs) or just drop the request? If the latter, we should be able to resurrect it and create the account. Cheers, Paxse (talk) 17:24, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(outdent) Excellent job, you're an ACC champion. Yes, I know we can [UNBAN] but if you'd banned the IP/email it would be interesting explaining to the new user the two conflicting emails... Paxse (talk) 17:43, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And a Happy Birthday from me too. True dropping a request doesn't send mail, but I think banning does. See message ID 19 on the toolserver. Paxse (talk) 17:56, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the 21st Century! Fortunately, I think WP has heard of that one, unless you think you are authorized to censor civil comments and prevent participation, both of which I believe are contrary to established WP norms. Mervyn Emrys (talk) 01:27, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Neuro, we were talking about this at WT:ACE2008#Eligibility. I think the best compromise here, since it's such a borderline situation, is to allow Mervyn to vote, and then even if his comments are indented so they don't count numerically, he can at least get his comments out there. It sounds like he's done a fair bit of research on the candidates, and I for one am interested in his thoughts. Does this sound like a reasonable compromise? --Elonka 01:34, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I also think this is a fair compromise. That way the vote can be considered as an additional opinion by whoever considers these things with a clear disclosure re the eligibility criteria. Orderinchaos 08:06, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Wikipedia Police

[edit]

Hey man, that's all water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned. My major gripe was that he reported me for vandalism because I reverted his edits, even though my edits were clearly not even remotely in the realm of vandalism. He wasn't even undoing vandal work, since I'm a member of the WikiProject Film and the Film Awards Task Force. I was just doing what I do, which is not vandalism. I was actually correcting incorrect information, if you must know, and he reverted it back to the incorrect information without doing any research. But I apologised for my remarks, acknowledged that I was out of line, and it's all over now, so stay out of it please. This isn't your fight.TheLastAmigo (talk) 20:54, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your closure of the Lendering AfD

[edit]

Hi, Although I understand that you applied WP:SNOW here and closed after less than 24 hours,as explained by some of the votes, there are good reasons to let this run for the full 5 days. RE: "POV assessment"

[edit]

Yeah. What exactly to call that edit is not a particularly clear issue for me. For me, the problem was that there was no source or evidence otherwise showing that Amazon's removal of the image was not coincidental, never mind due to the chilling effect. Of course, it was most likely because of the chilling effect, but the burden of proof is on the maker of the statement. Looking at it this way, the statement could have been labelled OR as it was a case of original synthesis. However, I think it goes a bit deeper than this, as I feel the term "chilling effect" is a fairly loaded phrase, because it implies that Amazon was unjustly stifled from exercising its free speech. Therefore, I think the original editor is guilty of observing the facts, and assessing it as the chilling effect, thereby giving it a judgement of wrong- and right-doing in a POV manner. Was that an overly convoluted explanation?

I should also point out that I was trying to be particularly vigilant of POV issues as I feared that editors - by their involvement in WP - might be inclined to take sides in such an issue.

What are your thoughts on my edit and explanation? -Seidenstud (talk) 09:10, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I let that helpme sit for 15 minutes (which is long for a helpme). Sometimes it is better to teach new users where and how to find answers instead of just giving them the answer. I have been trying to get that user to start looking for solutions instead of using helpme 5 times a day. The second sentence on the suggestbot page explains how to use it. Hello again,

Regarding the copyright infringement problem I have. The website I used is the company website of the man who gave a presentation to me. The rest of the information is notes I took from his powerpoint presentation. How can I get this fixed, referenced, and/or off of this list? Also, I received a notification that I was using "blatant advertising" and my article would be deleted. What steps can be taken to prove this is incorrect and make sure my article will remain public for my industry?

WikiCup notice

[edit]

The 2009 WikiCup will begin on January 1, 2009. The first round will run through March 31, 2009. For more information on this tournament, read the "about" section on the main WikiCup page.

This year, we have a different system in calculating points. At User:Garden/WikiCup/Submissions, you will find information about submitting your article (and other) work to earn points. Each contestant will have their own individual subpage for submitting completed work to us.

This year, User:ST47 will also be running one of his bots to calculate mainspace edits and read your submission subpages to calculate the point values you receive based on our scoring chart.

Questions or comment? Ask at the talk page or go directly to Garden or IMatthew's talk page. Good luck and Happy Holidays! -- ayematthew and Garden. 14:00, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merry Christmas

[edit]

No secret. I've experimented with all of those programs and found PNGOUT and PngOptimizer to be the best (with the former prevailing in the majority of cases). In this particular instance, the additional compression was provided entirely by PNGOUT (with the default settings); PngOptimizer was unable to compress the resultant file any further. With the order reversed, PngOptimizer increased the compression very slightly, and then PNGOUT achieved exactly the same result as it had on its own. —David Levy 13:09, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AVG vs. Avira

[edit]

I noticed on the help desk that you seem adamant about Avira being superior to AVG. I admit that both usually do well on test sites, depending on which one you're reading. And I freely admit it's been probably 2 years since I ran Avira, and that AVG 7.5 left much to be desired. Just curious, have you run 8.0 yourself yet, and why do you prefer Avira so much more? To be honest, I'm downloading Avira as I type this, as I respect your obvious abilities so much, and felt it was time to give it another run through. I don't agree with the Comodo choice, I didn't care for it (been about year), and it was a definite pain to remove, but that's for another discussion. Also, it seems lately that with the paid AV's that Nod32 has been getting the nod (pun intended) from the majority of AV testing sites. Have you used that much?, and what do you think? I'm just curious because it's not often I run into someone in the IT field that speaks poorly of AVG, even if they run something else like Avira or Avast (which I personally don't care for, but accept that it is a good alternative). Another reason I ask about AVG, is that I HAVE run into a few issues lately with the install failing. Usually either an outdated OS, a memory issue, or a win Installer issue. Well, sorry to take up so much of your time, but I enjoy exchanging thoughts with other IT folk when time permits. Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season. RP to your message over an RD entry about a viral video Digg story

[edit]

I was hoping to figure out why after submitting 24 stories on Digg, I could not get even one of them to become popular. Then I saw an opportunity to submit a story about a phenomenon so viral, it seemed it would have to make it to the front page. It still hasn't, so I knew something was horrifically wrong. It's like I was given an anti-popularity curse on that site. I doubt it's that, so maybe you could also answer why you think I can't even make a 42.5m+-view video front-paged on Digg.

PS: Should it have gone under the Entertainment sub-department? I only got one response here. --Let Us Update Special:Ancientpages. 11:38, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

<Quote>IMPECCABLE

Lauderdale's sleek suits and tonsorial splendor didn't hurt his on-air presence. A producer, once asked for footage of a messily attired Lauderdale for a blooper reel, replied icily: ``There's no such thing. That would be like the sun rising in the West. His hair (a full '70s Afro and bushy mustache, recalls former WPLG producer Steve Wasserman) became less imposing over the years, with the mustache finally going about a decade ago. Koshjumpgate 19:14, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's what one of his friends said about him once. It's of my understanding that it doesn't implies that "he always wore sleek suits and had impeccable diction on air", not that he was "know" for something. That's the problem with weasel words.
This same blind-trust on everything people said about him is also responsible for the article containing passages like "...he had a passion to "get the story right...". And when Lauderdale himself is quoted, that article reads like a press-release or a homage to the man. --Damiens.rf 19:38, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Neurolysis,

I see your change, don't worry, I'm not going to revert you, in my mind, that would be me being really lame. I disagree with the tag none the less. The "By whom" is the Miami Herald (which is a verifiable source), not a quote by an fellow co-worker, therefore, the by whom doesn't need to be there. THanks! Kosh Jumpgate 21:12, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ANI

[edit]

You do realize that the A in ANI stands for administrator don't you? You have no business marking threads as resolved and then telling others not to comment. You need to realize that your opinion is not of a higher value than mine and should not be treated as such. I like the "personal attack" warning you left me, I honestly had no idea that a "portion of admins" was a person. "will not be tolerated" You don't need the tools though since you have dictator status do you? My comment was a very general statement about administrators in general, and "portion of" in no way singles out any specific admin or group of admins. Landon1980 (talk) 19:54, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize, I was under the impression the NPA in "NPA may be more appropriate, making personal in a moment" was an acronym for no personal attacks. If not "no personal attacks" what did you intend that to stand for? It was at least more appropriate than your "defamation" warning though. Landon1980 (talk) 21:45, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please note you are the author of both. What exactly do you expect me to think when you say "NPA may be more appropriate, making personal in a moment" then you leave a warning so...Landon1980 (talk) 22:00, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And here is the cherry. I know that you aren't commenting yourself after your speech begging others not to do so. If it means so much to you for the discussion not to continue then what on earth are you doing? A new comment isn't the best way to end a discussion. I believe you use ANI to get a cheap thrill don't you, by pretending to be an admin I mean. Landon1980 (talk) 23:27, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Neuro, sorry I hadn't replied sooner. I hate to pull the plug on the adoption, however looking at the adoption page a second time maybe I'm more advanced than I thought I was. Just thought I'd tell you that I had a good time answering your questions, it actually helped me in a few cases because I remembered what I had researched to find that good answer. If you ever find yourself wanting to ask any more questions, let me know on my talk and I'll be there straight away :) Hope to continue working with you on the wiki! Thanks, [Belinrahs | 'sup? | what'd I do?] 20:26, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE:ANI

...it's certainly worth a look to get the tools back. I had requested that the admin privileges be removed from my original account since I had sworn never to return. Hey there

[edit]

Hey, thanks for the work with setting up the awards project. Not sure if you have the central page watchlisted but if you don't you should get it up there; we seem to constantly have some kind of policy/scope/limiations consensus debate on the boil (a bit silly considering there are all of six of us, but what the heck). I actually came to ask about account creation; I have access to the ACI, but it is permanently dead; literally no waiting requests. Is it always like that or am I just slow at getting there?

Also, how do you get the boxes of info on the "edit talk page" page? Ironholds (talk) 11:13, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent, thanks for the help! I was quite confused as to why there weren't any up there; I was assuming that the group of typewriter-monkeys we employ for that area of the wiki are hyped up on cocaine or summat. Ironholds (talk) 11:20, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
