Portal:Benin[edit]

Neglected portal.

Six selected articles; half are C-class, while the other half are B-class.
Creator started the portal in February 2010, but abandoned it a little over a month later. They haven't edited regularly at all since January 2014, and no one else has properly maintained this portal.
Pageviews in the first half of 2019 make up only .3088% of the parent article's pageviews in the same time period, down from the .6116% difference in the second half of 2015.

Delete per the nom. This junk portal has been abandoned for over nine years, and is 11 articles short of POG's minimum of 20. Since late 2006, the lead of WP:POG has said "Do not expect other editors to maintain a portal you create" ... and this one has not been maintained by Belovedfreak, who last updated it in March 2010, a little over a month after creation, and last edited portal space in April 2011. They also created many other junk portals that have been deleted: Portal:Burkina Faso, Portal:Gabon, Portal:Mauritius, Portal:Niger, Portal:Togo, and recreated after deletion Portal:Sudan and Portal:Botswana. Portal:Benin/Featured biography/3 has never been updated since creation in March 2010 and its subject, a former longtime head of state, died in Oct. 2015. It clearly fails WP:POG's requirement that portals should be about subjects broad enough to attract large numbers of readers and maintainers. This portal has had a decade of no maintainers and it had a very low 11 views per day from January 1 to June 30 2019 (while the head article Benin had 3,562 views per day in the same period).

POG also states portals should be associated with a wikiproject, but Wikipedia:WikiProject Benin is inactive (no posts in 2019 and as far as I can tell, there has never been an editor to editor conversation on the talk page), and the portal has never been mentioned on the talk page. Portals stand or fall on their merits in the now, not what could someday hypothetically happen with them, and this one falls flat. I oppose re-creation, as a decade of hard evidence shows Benin is not a broad enough topic to attract readers or maintainers. Newshunter12 (talk) 02:46, 9 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Delete - There are 9 articles (not only 6, because the biographies are articles), of which 6 have been unchanged since 2010, and the rest of the edits have been third-party edits. The portal has 11 daily pageviews in Jan19-Jun19, as opposed to 3562 for the head article. I calculate the percentage ratio of views of a portal and a head article, but I don't consider it as important as the number of pageviews for the portal. Don't hold popularity of an article against the portal, but 11 daily pageviews is not much about noise. Not enough articles, not enough maintenance of articles, not enough readers. Note to closing admin. I don't want in any way to prejudge the outcome ... but if you close this discussion as delete, please can you not remove the backlinks? Delete per User:ToThAc and User:Newshunter12. Delete The Category:Benin tree is a little bigger than Category:Togo, but smaller than Category:Burkina Faso. All three of these countries are least developed, mutually adjacent, and Francophone, so it is not surprising that Benin fails the broadness requirement for portal subject areas. –LaundryPizza03 (d c̄) 09:48, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
