From Proto-Mongolic *altan, compare Buryat алтан (altan), Kalmyk алтн (altn), Daur alt, Dongxiang antang. Possibly from Proto-Turkic *altun, whence Old Turkic 𐰞𐱃𐰆𐰣 (altun, gold), Karakhanid اَلْتوُنْ (altūn), Turkish altın.
