Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁elh₂- (to drive somewhere), albeit with no certain cognates.[1][2] Possible cognates include Latin alacer (lively, active, brisk), Proto-Germanic *alaną (to spurn, drive), and *lanō (lane)); Bengali ইলিশ (iliś, hilsa fish) was traditionally connected and interpreted as a "go-lord", but this is generally considered folk etymology.
