From her (β€œarmy”) +β€Ž gjest (β€œguest”). Akin to Proto-Germanic *Harigastiz, found on the Negau helmet as πŒ‡πŒ€πŒ“πŒ‰πŒ™πŒ€πŒ”πŒ•πŒ‰ (hariΟ‡asti) from around 400 BC; from *harjaz + *gastiz. Cognate with Old High German Herigast.
