Usage notes
[edit]
  • The sense "graveyard" occurs very often in placenames and seems to appear throughout all provinces in North Central Vietnam: Cồn Chạy in southern Thanh Hoá, Cồn Điếm and Cồn Vàng in Nghệ An, Cồn Đẹt in Hà Tĩnh, Cồn Quành in Quảng Bình, Cồn Dài in Quảng Trị, Cồn Kền in Thừa Thiên Huế are a few examples. It is not totally clear how common it is as a common noun in isolation, however.
