Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *delh₁- (to split, divide).[1] Cognate with Latvian dalis (part, share), as well as dalià (fate) and dalỹkas (thing, matter).[2] Possibly related to dailyti (to divide) and thence to Proto-Slavic *dělъ (part) (from *děliti (to divide).
