Donald Sterling's Journey so far ...
Before you go ...
- Born Donald Tokowitz to Russian immigrants in Chicago, Donald Sterling's parents moved to Los Angeles when he was just two years old. His father was a vegetable vendor and came from humble beginnings
- He was raised in Los Angeles' predominantly Jewish neighbourhood of Boyle Heights and went to the Theodore Roosevelt High School and California State University before graduating in law from the Southwestern University School of Law
- Donald and his wife Shelly changed their surname to Sterling as people found it difficult to pronounce Tokowitz and they thought it would help them in financial dealings
- Initially, he practised law and became an ace divorce lawyer in the early sixties. Later he ventured into real estate and purchased an apartment building in Beverly Hills
- He built his fortune by buying large swathes of land in the Los Angeles area and became a property magnate. Currently, he owns over 100 properties that house thousands of tenants
- In 1981, Sterling bought the National Basketball Association (NBA) team Clippers, based out of San Diego, for about $13 million. Three years later he moved the team to Los Angeles. However, the team had a lacklustre performance during his tenure as the owner
- He got into a big controversy in 2014 when his privately taped racist remarks were leaked to a celebrity website which sparked widespread outrage from fans and NBA players and led several commercial sponsors to sever ties with the team
- Following the revelation, Sterling was banned for life by the NBA and fined $2.5 million. He sued NBA and Adam Silver, its commissioner, for $1 billion in damages
- Following the loss of his majority ownership of Clippers, which he owned for 33 years, his wife — who was the co-owner — sold the club to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for $2 billion in August 2014, an American record at the time
Before you go ...
- The real estate mogul set up the Donald T Sterling Charitable foundation to focus on homelessness, poverty eradication, education among the underprivileged in the Los Angeles and Southern California area
