Larry Page's Journey so far ...
- Lawrence Edward Page, better known as Larry Page, met Sergey Brin while studying at Stanford in 1995
- Page had an idea for a search engine which could determine the credibility of web pages based on the number of times it was being backlinked by other web pages. Brin, too, was intrigued and both of them worked on an idea to invent an algorithm called PageRank
- The algorithm formed the base of a search engine which was initially called BackRub. They used Stanford’s network to take it live in 1996
- Soon, the search engine’s traffic was growing. With Stanford’s network no longer being a viable option to host the site, they raised some money and were contemplating a new name for their product
- After registering the domain name a year before, Google Inc was finally incorporated in 1998 and Page was named CEO
- By 1999, Google was processing around 500,000 queries every day and had become one of the fastest-growing tech companies of the time
- Following some professional altercations, he stepped down as CEO in 2001, and Eric Schmidt was brought in to take his place. Page continued to be involved in Google’s day-to-day operations
- Google went public in August 2004 giving the company a valuation of $27 billion. The IPO earned Page $3.8 billion and perpetual control of the company for both the founders
- He had anticipated the growth of mobile computing long before smartphones had become an everyman’s device. In 2005, he bought Android -- then a small start-up led by Andy Rubin -- for $50 million
- Overseen by the founders, Google entered the video streaming market with the $1.65 billion acquisition of YouTube in 2006
- He returned as the CEO of the company in 2011 making room for experimental projects
- By 2015, with Page at its helm, Google was involved in all kinds of futuristic technologies including self-driving cars, AI and quantum computing. To ease the complexity caused due to the various sub-divisions created within Google, a holding company called Alphabet Inc was formed the same year
- Now, Page was elevated to the role of CEO at Alphabet and Google was left in charge of its newly-appointed CEO Sundar Pichai
- In December 2019, he relinquished his designation as CEO of Alphabet but continues to serve as a member of its board of directors
Before you go ...
- Page has suffered from vocal cord paralysis at different points in his life
- In 2013, Page shared his vision for Google Island -- a place which would support innovations without any kind of regulatory hindrance
- He is deeply interested in flying cars and is involved with several start-ups developing aerial eclectic vehicles as an investor and advisor
- Google was almost sold off twice; once to an internet-based firm called Excite for $750,000 in 1999 and then to Yahoo for $3 billion in 2002
