Everyone -

I'm sorry - I have been busy making the configuration of this local new site secure in ways that I never was able to do with the old site that was based in Fort Worth, TX. That involved, this evening, installing some firewall software to reduce the chance that people break into the machine. I checked to see if people were logged in before I began, but I didn't expect a flurry of attempts to connect in the hour I was setting it up. *blush*

In doing this I had to restart the machine a few times, which is why you saw the robot die, then eventually the connection stop.

It's a bit annoying now, but this machine I have to make sure is very secure, because it has closer access to my home.

Also, I am working to make it a full-fledged mail server, for work my wife does consulting, as well as other things... It will also allow for user@greendragongroup.net email addresses, web-based email, stuff like that.

The one server meets many needs:

1) Forums for a group of friends
2) Chatrooms for Hogwarts Express and Green Dragon
3) A community site for an online-LOTR-based MMORPG (which I don't even belong to.. LOL)
4) The website, (eventually) email, etc. for wife's consulting work
5) Forums I am setting up for family members, so we can communicate in a group message setting.
6) My wife and my private email server. This will save us about

We have (1), (2), (3), half of (4) running, and the other half of (4), and (5) and (6) are being built. The big work, now that the firewall is running, is getting mail working. This isn't as simple as "installing Outlook" - this is a mail server - requiring secure authentication, anti-spam/virus filters, etc.

All this is to say that it will take batches of my time this week. I am going to modify the 'bots to notice I am working, and have Rosie or Dobby give a big "WARNING: SYSTEM IS BEING WORKED ON" greeting when I am working on things. :)

Totally understandable and completely appreciated! I don't mind occasionally being kicked out of the pub, it is probably good for my health. Rosie deserves a bit of time off from time to time, too.

Seriously, thank you for working hard to keep chat working and secure. I enjoy it and can certainly cope with occasionally its "in the shop".

I have been working on my mail server. I have gotten it pretty good - without needing any anti-spam email client software on Windows, I am now blocking 95%+ of the Spam that comes into it.

This is in preparation for possibly having "greendragongroup.net" mailing addresses.

The primary reason I want this to work is I am getting very sick and tired of Google collecting a giant database of my preferences based on what email I send and receive, just so they can collect ad revenue.

I don't like that much of myself stored in a database, and I am getting sick and tired of having my email in their system.

Sorry, JPB, I didn't mean to snipe. It was the weird timing that made me curious if it was something automated.

I know what you mean about Google and I agree, but I love gmail's functionality and I'm not sure I'd be able to easily break free from that.

My feet hurt after a very busy Sunday and I think I'll go into the chat room, put up my feet and see what develops, if anything.

If you have not set your browser set up to check for updated things every time you visit a web page, the chat information will be out-dated. There's nothing I can do about this; it's all based on your browser settings.

I usually just hit refresh whenever I'm wanting to check on the chatroom status, that always does it for me. I have *no* idea what my browser's set to do, and even less an idea how I would go about changing that setting, so I just do my little trick and try not to worry about it!

It has reached past 104 degrees Fahrenheit here today (that's about 40 degrees Celsius) - and the server in my garage just couldn't take the heat and shut itself down. I put a fan out there to blow air over it, and if it fails again, I will move the server into the house.

poor little server...100 degrees F is brutal for us all; hope you and your family are keeping cool and comfy. Thanks for taking good care of our Chat room.

The problem for me is that I'm on British time,10pm LT time is somewhere around 5am here, anybody closer to my time want to chose a time to have a chat? I admit now that I have never talked in a chat room, I poked my nose in on the Green Dragon one when it was empty but didn't know what to do next.

Calm, it is about 7:35 am where I am right now. Tell me what time that is your time and maybe we can work out a time which is reasonable for us both. As in ... is 10:36 am Green Dragon time be about 5:36 pm your time? That would mean an early morning chat for me could be an afternoon chat for you. Is that correct?

On another site we found that noon EST worked well. Afternoon for those in England, and not too early for the US west coast.

I came on too late and missed noon for today.

Noon EST is about 5pm British summer time and {I can never remember how to adjust time zones to GMT (are we the only country in the world that adjusts the clocks)} it would be either 4 or 6 when the clocks change.

For me that works. Now all we need is a convenient day.

ETA I wasn't here for noon today either. I got a bit distracted with happenings in another group. I think we are still trying to sort out when to be in the chat room. Have you been in cakefriend or do you fancy trying today?
