If "Published in" (P1433) is not OK for a music track, we need something else instead, like making Q67018010 a property.

Moebeus (talkcontribs)

I don't think that's the best way forward, we're trying to get rid of superfluous inverse statements .

If you install the ExMusica script found at the top of my common.js : User:Moebeus/common.js - Wikidata you will then see all the tracklists that are attached to the track (among other helpful music things).

Please don't create items for discographies or lists unless they are associated with a Wikipedia article of that type.

Moebeus (talkcontribs)

We use the discographies to get rid of the free standing follows / followed by statements. Not ideal, but I think it's a reasonable tradeoff.

Bovlb (talkcontribs)

Thanks for following up. Can you point me to a discussion or any documentation for your representation? We don't normally permit discographies that aren't associated with an article.

Moebeus (talkcontribs)

I've been editing music pretty much exclusivly for some years now and this is the first I'm hearing about needing permisson to create discography items not associated with an article :)

While I can see an argument for such a rule, there are good reasons to stick to the established practise, imo. Cleaning up the unwanted use of follow/followed by/notable work statements chief among them.

While not a priority for me personally, I welcome a Project Music discussion around this and will obviously abide by community consensus. My main issue with your deletions was really just that they happened so fast and with no warning, and without cleaning up the structural issues (broken backlinks all over the place).

Bovlb (talkcontribs)

In new page patrol we frequently encounter people creating discographies, filmographies, lists, etc. that serve no purpose, and these are usually quietly deleted. This is the first time I've heard that a discography or list without an article might have any useful structural purpose. I'm still waiting to hear more about that.

As I explained in the other thread you created, it is good practice *not* to delete incoming links when deleting items.`

Moebeus (talkcontribs)

I saw your reply. I wasn't aware that we had a bot cleaning up the statements, that's a relief!

We use the discographies to match the "chronologies" found in the infoboxes on various wikipedias, the "prev. album < this album > next album" part. Substantial work has gone into moving free-standing follows/followed by statements and turning them into discography qualifers in a structured, consistent manner. This work is ongoing.

It's a bit of a pragmatic compromise, no doubt about it. In a perfect world we shouldn't need these types of statements at all as they would instead be handled by queries, but people *will* keep re-adding them straight from Wikipedia if we simply delete them all.

A rough estimate: in excess of 10.000 discography items are currently used this way, if I had to guess only a fraction of those will have Wikipedia articles attached.

I'd really love to see a link to some discussion of this data model.

I have temporarily undeleted these items to allow discussion to take place without additional structural damage, pending an answer to my question above.
