On Monday 14 May, Europeana and Wikimedia host a day of free in-depth GLAM-Wiki workshops around Wikidata, and structured data on Wikimedia Commons, at the Europeana offices in The Hague. This day is organized in collaboration with, and precedes the EuropeanaTech Conference 2018, which takes place in Rotterdam 15 and 16 May.

  • When? Monday 14 May, 2018, from 09:30 till 17:00. Coffee, lunch and a 'borrel' (drinks) will be provided.
  • Where? Europeana offices at Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands), Prins Willem Alexanderhof 5, The Hague (next to Den Haag Centraal Station). Map
  • For whom? These workshops are suitable for staff of cultural organizations (GLAMs) who want to learn (more) about Wikidata and structured data on Wikimedia Commons. There are beginner and intermediate/advanced level workshops. A maximum of 50 people can attend.
  • How to participate? The workshop day is a free and optional addition to the EuropeanaTech Conference program. Please note that the workshop day is now fully booked!

Brief workshop summaries

[edit]

Wikidata and structured data on Wikimedia projects: general introduction

[edit]

A beginner-level, hands-on introduction to Wikidata and structured data on Wikimedia projects (structured lexicographical data, structured data for multimedia files on Wikimedia Commons), with an emphasis on examples where Wikidata is applied to GLAM- and Europeana-related content.

Workshop lead: Maarten Dammers (User:Multichill), Wikimedia volunteer, founder of the Sum of All Paintings project

DIY LOD - Install your own instance of Wikibase, the software behind Wikidata, for your collection

[edit]

A intermediate level workshop on how to use Wikibase for your own collection — in essance, install your very own special Wikidata-like repository with the structure and level of detail that fits your organization.

Workshop lead: Jens Ohlig, Community Communication, Wikimedia Deutschland
[edit]

Wikimedia Commons, a sister project of Wikipedia, is a collection of more than 40 million free media files; many of these files have been contributed by GLAMs. The project Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons (2017-19) converts information about these files to a structured and machine-readable format, making them easier to view, search, edit, organize and re-use, in many languages. This is implemented with Wikibase, the same technology as used for Wikidata.

This thorough re-design will make it easier and more attractive for GLAMs to contribute media files to Commons. A lot of metadata on Wikimedia Commons will be retrieved from Wikidata, which means that Commons can map its own ontology to metadata standards, ontologies and vocabularies that are widely used in the GLAM sector and that are included in Wikidata. Commons will also increasingly move towards a system of machine-readable and structured copyright information and licensing. In this interactive workshop, we work with participants to learn more about their own collections' metadata models, and gather input for the best methods to map these to Wikimedia Commons' file descriptions.

Workshop lead: Sandra Fauconnier, GLAM-Wiki strategist, Wikimedia Foundation

Stronger Together: Wikidata as a vocabulary and authority control hub

[edit]

Wikidata has evolved to become a lively, and increasingly rich, data hub that links to many controlled vocabularies and authority files used in the GLAM sector and beyond. This workshop explores and gives examples of how GLAMs can reap benefits from this, by linking to Wikidata from collection databases. Europeana, for instance, can leverage data providers' connections to Wikidata to improve collections' data mapping during aggregation. The Dutch initiative CopyClear uses Wikidata to determine copyright status of Wikidata-linked heritage collections.

Workshop lead: Sandra Fauconnier, with cases by Hugo Manguinhas (Europeana Foundation) and Hanno Lans (CopyClear)

Wikidata querying with SPARQL: introduction

[edit]

A beginner-level introduction to SPARQL queries and the Wikidata query engine, with a focus on queries relevant to the GLAM domain and Europeana-related content.

Workshop lead: Jens Ohlig, Community Communication, Wikimedia Deutschland

Wikidata querying with SPARQL: advanced tutorial, including federated querying

[edit]

A tutorial on SPARQL queries for those who are already a bit familiar with basic querying. This tutorial will outline more advanced queries, including a demonstration and hands-on try-out of the federated features of Wikidata's SPARQL engine.

Workshop lead: Andra Waagmeester, data scientist at Micelio

Sum of All Paintings - Demo

[edit]

An introduction to the volunteer-driven Wikidata project Sum of All Paintings, that aims to create a Wikidata item for every notable painting in the world.

By Maarten Dammers (User:Multichill), Wikimedia volunteer, founder of the Sum of All Paintings project

Birds of a Feather sessions

[edit]

Two 'free-style', ad hoc sessions, for discussion of any topics that have been insufficiently addressed earlier in the day.

Ask us anything! Wikidata for your collection: What you already do, what you want to do, and how to make it work even better

[edit]

A session where the workshop leads of the day are available to answer your specific questions; related to your own ideas and/or your current usage of Wikidata.
