Thank you for providing images to the commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a Copyright tag - images without a appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate Categories, so it can be found by others.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more Information, have a look at Commons:Licensing, Commons:criteria for inclusion and the Community Portal. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the village pump. Thank you. -- Joolz 22:03, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Paulo Juntas 00:39, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please add photos to species page/category like Armillaria mellea not in family category. --EugeneZelenko 04:26, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Should I use the Family category, or is it were better to use the Genus subcategory whenever present? What if there's no Genus subcategory? For instance, I have a pic of a fungus, Schyzophyllum commune, family Schizophyllaceae. There is no Schyzophyllum genus page - should I create one? I see no uniform criterion, so I would like some guidance. Do I have to check whether there's a genus category, and if not, create one? Or upload to the family category? I have hundreds of pictures to upload, in plants alone. So you see, your answer is very important. - Tintazul 09:19, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I think you should use species (Schyzophyllum commune) page or category. If page does exist already, please use this page. If page don't exist, create category. This page/category should be included in Genus (if exist) of Family (create new if necessary) category.
I think good idea to communicate with other active participant in this area: BotBln, Franz Xaver. Please look also on existing categories/pages structure for example in Category:Plantae. --EugeneZelenko 14:19, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Tintazul! Your request for speedy deletion is not in accordance with deletion guidelines. If you think this photo should be deleted, you should have placed it in Commons:Deletion requests, so that the request can be discussed. Are you sure, that this is Chenopodium ambrosioides? If this really is Ch. ambrosioides, I think it should not be deleted, but eventually re-uploaded with the correct name. However, I suppose, that you do not know Ch. ambrosioides very well, als both of your photos Image:Chenopodium ambrosioides plant.jpg and Image:Chenopodium ambrosioides flowers.jpg show some Amaranthus, probably Amaranthus retroflexus. Also here, my tentative determination needs to be confirmed and eventually both photos be re-uploaded with the correct name. I will remove your deletion request, as it is not in accordance with the guidelines. Best regards --Franz Xaver 23:39, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see, that in September you put a question on my talk page concerning categorisation. I am sorry for not responding. Your message came in a time, when I was inactive in Commons for many weeks. Regards --Franz Xaver 23:43, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Melilotus

[edit]

Hello Tintazul! You found something that's better: Image:Melilotus officinalis flowers.jpg is not Melilotus officinalis, which is wide-spread all over Europe. It is Melilotus segetalis, a species first described 1804 by Brotero in his "Flora Lusitanica" as Trifolium segetale. He wrote in Latin: "Colitur circa Olisiponem, et alibi in Extremadura". So you took the photo not far from the locus typicus. Melilotus segetalis can be found in the western part of the Mediterranean region. Regards --Franz Xaver 19:13, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As Category:Cistaceae does not have so many entries, it is not necessary to have a subcategory for Cistus. Please, keep material compact and simple. If you want to link to commons, you can link to Cistus. No category needed. Regards --Franz Xaver 19:18, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All right, I will stop creating categories for plant genuses. -- Tintazul 07:37, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vectorised versions of raster images

[edit]

I commend your effort to replace raster images with vector versions where it is more appropriate. The bad news is that there's a problem with some of the images that you've created. The good news is that it's easy to fix.

I noticed that at least some of the images you have put up on Commons:Deletion requests as having been superseded provide a different licence (such as GFDL) to the one you have chosen (CC-by-SA). If you create a derivative work of a GFDL-licensed work, your work must also be GFDL-licensed, so you must change the licence on all such images to comply with the originals.

LX (talk, contribs) 16:01, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your tip on licensing, LX! I shall now dual-license all images I've created which derive from another person's work with that person's original license, plus my license of choice (CC-BY-SA-2.5.) – Tintazul talk 17:53, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you can't do that either, unless the original work is also dual-licensed. A work derived from a work licensed only under the terms of the GFDL must itself be licensed only under the terms of GFDL. LX (talk, contribs) 19:21, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This debate prompted me to actually read the GNU FDL. Apparently under 4.E I can license my modifications under a different license; thus to the extent that my SVG traced from the JPEG is different from the JPEG, I could license those differences under CC something, while keeping solely the GFDL for the common part between the JPG and the SVG (?); I shall not make matters more complicated, and I shall license my derivative works of GFDL works as GFDL, and will list the original author(s) as author(s) of the final work.
The GFDL seems ill-fitted for anything which isn't text, like SVG; after all, to my little knowledge of SVG I cannot for instance add a "History" section to the document as per 4.I. But hey - it's all right! Thanks for your corrections – Tintazul talk 22:50, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not at all a fan of the GFDL myself, but I have read it thoroughly whilst writing a translation of it. Section 4 E simply says that you add "Copyright © Your Name" next to "Copyright © Original Author" to indicate that a violation of the licensing terms would violate the copyrights of all authors. It doesn't mean you can add other licensing conditions, as explained by the opening paragraph of Section 4. One of the main purposes of the GFDL is to keep derivatives free, and if one were free to license derivatives (or the modifications within derivatives) under a CC licence, then one could also apply a more restrictive licence. The "History" section is maintained automatically by the MediaWiki software (and if it weren't, you could still add it as XML comments, I guess). LX (talk, contribs) 03:57, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, all right, so it's a copyright notice, not a separate copyright on my own improvements. The latter would prove extremely complicated, particularly distinguishing my own improvements from the original GFDL stuff. It would also bring about much weaseling; I think some shrewd people wanting to make a profit have tried picking something in the public domain, adding something trivial to it, and claiming copyright to the whole thing. And succeeded. I don't want to drop any names (even because it's the practice that's evil, not the companies by themselves), but I'm glad the GFDL prevents against such manoeuvers.
I've listened to one of your tracks, The End of the Millennium, and while it's not exactly my cup of tea, I enjoy the fact that you're in musical creation. Keep it up! Since you're Swedish, you might know Koop; they're not exactly my style either, but I know Waltz for Koop and like most of the songs there. – Tintazul talk 23:42, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I hadn't heard of them, but I'll have to check them out. LX (talk, contribs) 04:17, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spotting copyvios on flickr

[edit]

There are a number of things I look for when deciding this:

  • Resolution, in this case it is only 300px x 300px - consistent with being taken off a news site
  • Lack of EXIF metadata.
  • Watermarks / borders (in this case a thin black border)
  • Quality - the image has clearly been taken with a professional camera with a long lens, and from the angle someone at pitchside.
  • The presence of other "stolen" images on a flickr users profile.

as a result I would say I'm about 99% sure this image isn't freely licensed, although if you can provide evidence to the contrary I would love to be proved wrong. Thanks, ed g2stalk 16:01, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. The URI is http://flickr.com/photos/10528089@N00/12275315. ed g2stalk 16:04, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd usually put the last point down as my deletion summary (persistent copyvio user). Images which are deemed to be "obvious" copyvios are subject to "speedy deletion" without discussion. I am aware we get images which tick some of the above boxes but are actually free, so I try to be as sure as possible before speedy deleting. ed g2stalk 00:58, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PPS if you are using flicklickr be aware that there are a significant number of these copyvios on flickr, so be as suspicious as is reasonably possible when getting images from there as ones that slip through onto here often go unnoticed for a long time. ed g2stalk 01:00, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and suggestion for DST begin image

[edit]

Thanks for contributing Image:DST begin.svg; I very much like having SVG rather than PNG for stuff like this. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to solve a problem I also noticed with Image:Begin_CEST.png, namely, that the red arrow is a bit small and hard to see. Perhaps it could be replaced with a red region, something like [2]? Or perhaps a bigger arrow, as in [3]?

Anyway, the existing image is fine, so these suggestions are mere quibbles. Thanks again. Eubulides 23:32, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RFA

[edit]

Hey Tintazul,

Regarding your RFA. I am sorry it didn't work out this time. In my view it was a situation that was not really about you as a candidate. sometimes it just turns out that way...although we try to avoid politics like any "election" an RFA has the potential to be spun off-course by an unexpected element. if you decide to run in the future, I feel quite positive it would be successful.

FWIW: re "benefit of the doubt" - I don't think there is any doubt about trusting you to use the tools correctly, which is what is usually referred to with this phrase. In my opinion, Commons needs admins who will be active members of the community (especially in that role as admin, but not necessarily only). There are plenty of trustworthy people from other Wikimedia projects, but I don't feel it is helpful or healthy for the Commons community to give them all adminship. Having a list of 800 admins would not be great if 700 of them only visit twice a year.

Anyway... I hope this experience has not made you too "sour", if you know what I mean; your final words were very sporting and I really respect such a mature response.

Thanks for uploading Image:Bloemfontein nagtelike stadshorison.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). Greetings from Austin, Texas. When looking at your image File:US Secession map 1865.svg I noticed that after user Escondites made a change the legend colors in Description Section of the file description page no longer match the colors of the image.

¡Hola! El nombre de éste país nunca se escribe "Киргызия", ni en ruso, ni en kirguís. ¿Quiére Ud. cambiarlo por "Кыргызстан" (come se escribe en kirguís, y tambien by algunos gente in ruso), o por "Киргизия" (que es el nombre tradicional del pais en ruso), or por Киргизстан (que es una forma "más rusa" de "Кыргызстан")? A minute ago I noticed this map that you made: File:Oceania ISO 3166-1.svg, and I think it's really awesome. If it's not too much trouble, please can you make a version without any of the country or territory codes on it? Thanks in advance!!! Runningfridgesrule (talk) 15:12, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Croatia in Europe_ISO_3166-1

[edit]

Hi,

the map File:Europe_ISO_3166-1.svg gives "PT" as the code for w:Croatia (Hrvatska), but it should be "HR" according to w:ISO_3166-1. Could you please fix that? I do not know how to do it myself. Thank you. --93.82.13.227 19:17, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Could you modify this chart, and make the central region of the middle image a second color, like orange, representing the en:Polygon density? Tomruen (talk) 02:15, 27 August 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Hi! Would you concider to add {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} to your template? You have allready version 2.5 so this should not be a big change but it would be a big help in the migration project. --MGA73 (talk) 20:19, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Polygonum amphibium has dense and straight inflorescence, more thicker stem, more wide leaves. The plants on the picture look like Polygonum hydropiper, but I do not know Portugalese flora, it may be something similar. Kenraiz (talk) 20:44, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please help replace this outdated license

[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

Europe countries

[edit]

Hello Tintazul,

Would you remember the source you used to create Europe countries.svg? Given that this map is used a lot – both directly and as map background – it would be great to know its source. Thanks, Pethrus (talk) 10:06, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No source for Europe countries.svg that I remember. Why would people change the colours of the map to show the countries in blue? That is ridiculous. I expected people to create derivative works, but to keep my own map in the earth colours I've chosen.– Tintazul talk 08:51, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you for the answer. About the colors, you're totally right and imho you should revert to your colors – maybe uploading the blue one with another name. --Pethrus (talk) 10:41, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tintazul,

I notice that some images you created from the font I designed, MPH 2B Damase, (such as the Gothic letters) appear to credit David McCready as the one who created that font. I have no idea who David McCready is but I can assure you and it is well-documented that I created that font. My name is Mark Williamson. I hope you will correct this issue as soon as possible. --Node ue (talk) 00:52, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Podarcis bocagei

[edit]

Hi, I have a question about some photos of Podarcis Bocagei you uploaded. I saw photos like that and its colors seem different than how it is described. Is it a juvenile??--Supremo (talk) 10:02, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I read an article about this species and there's written that males and females' colour is different: males are green and females are brown-like. But both sexes have got two yellow/light green lengthwise stripes on their back, and I don't see these stripes. Also, I see strange yellow spots on a black back. These things don't correspond to this species. How did you find out that it was Podarcis bocagei?--Supremo (talk) 21:23, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for the information.--Supremo (talk) 21:33, 2 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Abzeronow (talk) 15:47, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Cat behavior has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
