The Meeting

[edit]

Want to meet a Friendly Face first?

[edit]

We know it can be difficult for some people to walk into a group of strangers without knowing anyone. If you'd like to meet up with a friendly face before the meeting or to have a chat to see if this group is for you please contact Dianne on info @ wikimedia.nz Dianne will be overjoyed to introduce you to one of the group who will be available to meet up with you for coffee and chat. They can also be on hand to meet you prior to the meeting and walk in with you and introduce you to the group. Whatever will make you comfortable.

  • Marshelec reports: WANZ has received the 2024-25 Grant from Wikimedia Foundation of $331,025.95. In the past month we have made a travel grant to Ambrosia10 for attendance at the joint SPNHC TDWG 2024 conference – in Okinawa in September. We have also made a grant to Auckland War Memorial Museum for their 12–month Wikipedian-in-Residence project. We have filed our 2023 Performance Report (for the 2023 calendar year) with our regulator Charities Services. The report can be viewed at and can be viewed at this link.

Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

[edit]
  • Ambrosia10 (talk) Te Papa research expeditions: Working with Avocadobabygirl preparing an extended abstract to be published in a Pensoft journal about the project. Have received funding from WANZ to attend the SPNHC TDWG conference I'm presenting this paper at and have been invited by the organisers to present after the plenary keynote on the Monday of the conference thus presenting to EVERYONE! A fabulous opportunity so couldn't pass it up.
WikiProject IBC 2024 - working with Stitchbird2 on preparing the poster for this conference which we've now uploaded to commons along with various graphics etc so we can share this as widely as possible. The slides for both the one hour virtual on boarding session happening this Tuesday are almost finished as are the slides for the half day in person workshop. I've also been doing a lot of work on wikifying the conference. Also working on reviewing the Women Genera presentation slides that my colleague Carmen Ulloa Ulloa will be presenting on. Checking the Wikidata portion of the talk.
Wikimania 2024 - slides and scripts are being polished for the three Wikimania presentations I'm doing. More will be happening on this next week. I'm also preparing to attend the GLAMwiki meetup on the day before Wikimania as they want to know more about the BHL-Wiki working group.
I chaired the BHL-Wiki working group had their monthly meeting and also had a meeting with the Alex, the person from Flickr Foundation creating the Flickypedia tool about what structured data we wanted automatically added onto Wikicommons when uploading those images.
Hidden Figures CURE has had the BCEENET reviewers come back with feedback but because the Makenzie and I are both away at IBC we won't be able to get to this until the 15th of August. We've decided to upload the Bionomia module we drafted to Zenodo prior to working on the publication going on the BCEENET QUBES website.
  • Einebillion has copyedited the community activity report and has been working on the end of year reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation from the WANZ committee. I've also been working with Dianne organising the in-person committee meeting. For content I've been progressing the New Zealand Women photographers dataset.
  • Noracrentiss - committee work and also returning to sandbox to fix up women articles she’s got lurking there. Looking forward to research expeditions editathon
  • Marshelec reports: I have been expanding Bushy Park (New Zealand) - a great little reserve that is a remnant lowland forest, and has a pest-exclusion fence so that it is now a bird sanctuary. I have also continued work on Foveaux Strait, and created a separate draft list article for the List of shipwrecks in Southland. Also made improvements to Farewell Spit and Kaikōura. Another main project in the past weeks has been developing a new draft article Draft:Sport in Christchurch, as a means of improving the main Christchurch article. The aim is to expand coverage of sport in Christchurch in a specific article, and then cut back the poorly constructed content about sport in the main article. The Christchurch article gets around 30,000 pageviews a month, and clearly warrants significant effort to lift the quality. There are only a few editors currently active in working on the Christchurch article. There have been some disputes, and not a lot of progress overall. I hope that my contributions are helpful.
  • Wainuiomartian Doing some thorough editing and had a discussion about rating the article as B class and the criteria for doing this.
  • Gertrude206 Working on article on historic church in Auckland and not sure what she's going to call the article because of name changes. Deconsecrated and threatened with demolition - Wikidata item deals with building and so does the proposed article. Group suggests current name and adding also known as's.

Future events

[edit]
If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard July 2024 - June 2025. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
If you're interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact admin @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It's really simple - we promise!

Outstanding Action Points to Progress

[edit]
  • Otari-Wilton's Bush event ideation and organising We need an organiser! Group agreed to move the dates to autumn. User:Noracrentiss will talk with User:Ambrosia10 about organising resource. WANZ application could easily include an event organiser but we need someone to lead it and shape the agenda of the event. - Next steps? Stitchbird and Ambrosia10 are keen to organise but both are committed up to the middle of August due to Wikimania. Both intend to commit to this after that date. Ambrosia10 is available from September 9th onward (apart from the weekend of the 21st & 22nd of September and the 5th and 6th of October). Resources see this page as an example of what/how to do this. Talk to Mike about slides for this. 28th September and 19 October proposed days.
  • Parliamentary Library The library has had its Wikipedia guidance for staff approved. Any update on support for project?

Good Article / Featured Article Work

[edit]
  • Group is planning to work on Wellington Botanic Garden article. User:Wainuiomartian has substantially expanded the article and added photos. Anybody have any ideas for further improvement? A picture of the Henry Moore sculpture?
