Tail Letters

[edit]

Does anyone know why they use ZZ for their tail markings? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.94.207.2 (talk) 02:07, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. What happened was, in South Korea, they were flying F-86 Sabres, and they turned and ran. So their tail letters are "ZZ"; Dead Last. My dad flew MC-130 Combat Shadows at Kadena, so he would know. Interesting bit of trivia. Jak474 (talk) 18:51, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rumor

[edit]

I added text that User:Looper5920 deleted from the Kadena AB page, it is better here. But as noted there, it still needs work. It is not as easy to cite a prevalent rumor. I heard it last night from a helicopter pilot whilst sitting at a bar in Nairobi ... it is pretty well known, but that is just one more random anecdote. It is too bad the quote at the end is from an internal site.

This is the most notable thing about the 18th (for good or bad ;-). Definitely needs some description. I'll try to get back and copyedit soon. Robert Ullmann 11:58, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is an encyclopedia. Sections with the title "Rumors" do not belong especially when you accuse people of abandoning their squadron mates to die. Please cite your ascertions or do not add them again.--Looper5920 12:02, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Huh? No-one is accusing anyone of anything. Either the Chinese/Koreans, or the pilots of the 18th. There was no such atrocity. This is a story told by the 18th which they are proud of. Ever been in a military unit (or similar) with some folklore? It is probably the single most notable thing about the 18th. Ask them why they won't trade a unit patch, and they'll say "oh, you don't want one, it is bad news, let me tell you why ..." and then tell you the story very convincingly. Can you understand that the citations are of the MYTH? The myth is a real thing, and part of the past and present history of the unit. The citations document that the myth exists. This section is cited, removing it is section blanking. Robert Ullmann 12:03, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

During several automated bot runs the following external link was found to be unavailable. Please check if the link is in fact down and fix or remove it in that case!
