Dox Formation, unit 4 of 5, Unkar Group

[edit]
Basalt Creek, in the Dox Formation.
(At left-(northwest), entering the Colorado River at a small 'deltaic' region-(alluvial fan).)

I just made the Grand Canyon Supergroup article, and linked it in the Cardenas Lava article. Here are some important notes / observations. (the Cardenas Lava is one of first articles, and needs adjustments)

  • Lava Creek--Lava Canyon (Chuar) Rapid, Mile 65.5
  • Tanner Rapid, Mile 68.5
    • just downstream from Basalt Creek, and a view similar to the photo above (from Tanner Trail, of west ridgeline, Tanner Canyon, and (the view)--below (top of Redwall Limestone)

The reds of the Dox Formation are on the northeast bank of Basalt Creek (confer with a photo from Hiking Arizona's Geology, Hike 3, Tanner Trail. (by Ivo Lucchitta)). The photo (above, or other photos), and a graphic interpretation of the photo shows some interesting items (in book: photo left, graphic of photo, right).

The thick, grayish banding-(sub-unit), above the red bandings of the Dox Formation is clearly like the Cardenas Lava layers above it. One can notice the organized, colored, multi-banding in the photo is the Nankoweap Formatiion, above the Cardenas Lava, and in contact with the underside of the Tapeats Sandstone-(in other photos, for example at Apollo Temple, downstream), short cliffs (cliff-former). The Tanner Graben (a down-dropped graben) is why they appear in the same photo; the Nankoweap is on the top of the graben.

Basalt Creek, in the Dox Formation, (around river bend, left).

Larger view same region. Shows the deep black Cardenas Lava, (layered Nankoweap across top of it), and surrounded downstream, and upstream by the reddish Dox Formation, riverside, and upslope, below the other Cardenas Lava (slopes). The Tanner Graben is quite apparent in the photo, and is down-dropped into the Dox F. (by 300-600 ft, ?). The Cardenas Lava is more vertical in the graben, and appears much blacker (less accumulation of erosion units?).

A side note--4 buttes are visible to north: Temple Butte, Chuar Butte, Kwagunt Butte, & Nankoweap Butte, all because of the East Kaibab Monocline running upriver, and then NNW, or N up the east side of the Kaibab Plateau.

So... because I have recently only created some of these geology unit articles, and putting photos in the categories in WikiCommons, I want to suggest that it appears like some interbedding of the top of the Dox Formation with the lower "Cardenas Lavas" subunits. Most of the photo in Lucchitta's chapter, Tanner Trail, shows the Cardenas as "slopes", as is the Dox Formation. The exception is the photo from Comanche point (in Article) which also seems to show Tapeats Sandstone cliffs-(the bottom of which is the Great Unconformity). It seems like there are only some sections of the Cardenas Lava that are "resistant", 'island' sections (like Lava Butte).
