New Addition

[edit]

Added "Drop It-N-Rock It" by Chicano rap artist Mr. Criminal to the Featured Performer chart. Supposedly, it charted, but I don't have the numbers. Hear the song here ElMeroEse (talk) 04:47, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bubbling Under and similar

[edit]

I have just removed some positions shown in the columns for Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (both 100-song charts), where the positions were over 100, and links point to a footnote saying, "Charted only on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles or Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles charts, 25-song extensions of the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts respectively."

I did not delete positions in the column for Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs which are footnoted with, "Charted only on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales chart.", although I should have for consistency. I also didn't reword the footnotes, or make new columns for the other charts, but I thought we might hash it out here first.

Saying that the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart is an extension of Billboard Hot 100 is misleading, and adding (for example) 8 from the Bubbling Under chart to 100 and calling it 108 on the Hot 100 is not accurate or reliable, and comprises WP:OR, and maybe WP:SYNTHESIS. It seems the consensus on WP has moved away from this add-them-together approach; although I can't point to one single discussion, it's come up several times at WT:Manual of Style (record charts), which you can find by searching in the archives for "bubbling". See this discussion from April, for example. It also came up recently at Talk:The Best Damn Thing (song)#Bubbling Under.

I have no opposition to listing the BU positions (or the Singles Sales positions), but they shouldn't be shoveled in under the wrong chart. Let's add (up to) three new columns for these things, label them correctly (we've got space for more columns), and do away with the footnotes. But first: we need sources for these positions. One problem noted about Billboard's Bubbling Unders is the lack of archives for them. The recent addition of refs by Andrewlp1991 didn't help me any; they purport to be XML files but don't appear to contain any positions at all. I don't see what we're supposed to do with those. I deleted those when I reverted the addition.

Without usable sources, of course, I think these ought to be removed, which is why I started where I did. Which direction should we move in now? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 14:29, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

John, please view those XML files on Internet Explorer. Since they're in code, lemme help you some with reading 'em. Look for the numbers between <peak></peak>. You'll get it. If you don't, I'll put up a request for comment right now. Andrewlp1991 (talk) 04:21, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Andrew. Firefox (my usual browser) seems to strip out the schema, so I saw only values, without any separation or delimiters, all impossible to make out: Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles2005-02-12345SinglesFat JoeIncredibleAtlanticTerror Squad15Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles2005-02-05345SinglesFat JoeIncredibleAtlanticTerror Squad14Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles2005-01-29345SinglesFat JoeIncredible ...etc.
I'm still not happy about the concatenation of different charts, but let me stew in my own juices a while longer. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 00:29, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
