Hungarian

Alternative forms

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From English computer.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ˈkompjuːtɛr], [ˈkompjutɛr], [ˈkomputɛr][1] (the latter is rare)
  • Hyphenation: kom‧pu‧ter
  • Rhymes: -ɛr

Noun

[edit]

komputer (plural komputerek)

  1. (dated) synonym of számítógép (computer, a programmable device).

Usage notes

[edit]

This spelling is the officially endorsed, accepted version,[2] although hybrid[3][4] in terms of reflecting the pronunciation of “c” as [k] but preserving the English spelling of “u” despite its approximate pronunciations [ju] or [juː]. Its alternative forms kompjuter or kompjúter, though more faithful in pronunciation and consistent in transcription, are considered nonstandard. The term is dated in any versions, nonetheless.

The standard version was possibly chosen because the p + j + vowel sequence is uncommon within a Hungarian word stem (cf. musical as a Hungarian loanword rather than *mjuzikel).[5] The [j] between a vowel and a consonant is more accepted in loanwords, e.g. lájk(ol), fájl, szmájli, and the considerably earlier sztrájk. It is also possible that eliminating the sound [j] seemed preferable when codifying the form so [komputer] was in fact meant to reflect the Hungarian pronunciation.[6]
